How to Fix Raspberry Pi FFmpeg Stream Disconnects When the Network Drops

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First identify which connection is failing: FFmpeg may be reading a source such as HTTP or RTSP, or writing a stream to a server. Then check whether FFmpeg exits or stays running but stops receiving or sending packets. The fix depends on that distinction: HTTP reconnect options apply to HTTP, RTSP transport choices address a different path, and output recovery uses different FFmpeg mechanisms.

Diagnose the failing connection before changing options

A network drop can produce several different symptoms. An FFmpeg process that exits needs a process restart policy. A process that remains alive but stalls needs investigation of its input, output, timeout behavior, and recovery settings. A message such as “broken pipe” often indicates an output write failure, but the surrounding log and command determine what actually failed.

  1. Record the setup. Save the output of ffmpeg -version, the exact command with stream keys, passwords, and other secrets removed, and the complete log from before through after the interruption.
  2. Mark each endpoint and protocol. Note whether the input and output use HTTP, RTSP, RTMP, or another protocol. Do not assume an option for one protocol controls another.
  3. Check the process state. After a drop, determine whether FFmpeg exited, is still running and reporting errors, or is alive but no longer making progress.
  4. Check the installed build’s options. Use ffmpeg -h protocol=http for HTTP protocol options and ffmpeg -h muxer=fifo for FIFO muxer options where supported. Option names and defaults can vary by packaged FFmpeg version; current FFmpeg documentation may describe a newer build than the one installed on the Pi.

If FFmpeg reads an HTTP source

FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol implementation documents separate controls for reconnecting, including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and reconnect_streamed. These are HTTP input controls, not universal reconnect switches for RTSP or network outputs. The FFmpeg project’s current libavformat/http.c source documents these options and their defaults, but defaults are version-dependent.

Inspect the HTTP protocol help for your installed binary and select only the retry behaviors appropriate to the source. For example, reconnecting after a network error and reconnecting after an HTTP error are distinct decisions: the latter should be limited to status codes that can reasonably be retried. Set retry limits and delay policy deliberately rather than relying on a default that may differ in your build. If the source server itself is unavailable, retries cannot make it serve data again.

If FFmpeg reads an RTSP camera or server

RTSP is not covered by the HTTP reconnect options. FFmpeg supports RTSP media transport over UDP and TCP. UDP can be low-latency, but packets may be lost or arrive out of order; TCP interleaves media within the RTSP control connection and may behave better on a path where UDP packets are being lost or blocked.

Try TCP as a diagnostic

For an RTSP input, test -rtsp_transport tcp as an input option placed before that input’s -i, for example:

ffmpeg -rtsp_transport tcp -i 'rtsp://camera.example/stream' ...

Replace the example address and the omitted processing/output arguments with your actual values. If TCP improves stability, that is evidence to investigate UDP loss, firewall rules, routing, or the camera/server’s transport behavior. It is not a guarantee that FFmpeg will re-establish every RTSP session after an interruption. If FFmpeg exits on the drop, use a supervisor to restart it; if it remains alive, examine the logs, whether the camera is reachable again, and whether the input has stalled.

Choose transport based on the camera/server and network, not on a blanket rule. UDP and TCP can differ in latency and firewall compatibility. The FFmpeg Protocols Documentation’s RTSP section describes the available transports and UDP packet behavior.

If FFmpeg writes a network stream

For network output, the FFmpeg FIFO muxer provides an in-process recovery path. Its documented options include attempt_recovery, recovery_wait_time, max_recovery_attempts, recover_any_error, and overflow handling. In the FFmpeg Muxers Documentation, attempt_recovery defaults to false, recovery_wait_time to five seconds, max_recovery_attempts to zero (unlimited successive attempts), and drop_pkts_on_overflow to false. Verify these settings against your installed build.

The documentation’s example for an outage uses a FIFO muxer with an FLV format and options to drop packets on overflow, attempt recovery, and wait one second between recovery attempts. The structure is:

-f fifo -fifo_format flv -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a configuration fragment, not a complete command. Use a FIFO format compatible with the actual destination and muxer; do not copy the FLV example unchanged to an unrelated output. Place output options in the correct position for your command and check the FIFO muxer help for your FFmpeg version.

Choose the overflow behavior

  • Keep dropping disabled: the documented default is to avoid discarding queued packets. A full queue can delay or block processing while the destination is unavailable, which may preserve queued content but is not necessarily suitable for a live stream.
  • Enable drop_pkts_on_overflow: the encoder can continue in real time when the queue fills, but some stream content is omitted. This trades continuity of timing for completeness of the queued media.
  • Set a retry policy: choose a recovery wait interval and, if appropriate, a maximum attempt count based on how long the destination may be unavailable. Unlimited retries do not guarantee eventual recovery if the endpoint stays down.

If FFmpeg exits, restart it outside FFmpeg

An in-process reconnect or FIFO recovery option cannot restart a process that has terminated. Use a service manager or other supervisor to relaunch the command after failure, with a measured restart delay to avoid a rapid restart loop when the endpoint is persistently unavailable. Keep this separate from FFmpeg’s own recovery: the supervisor handles process lifetime, while FFmpeg options handle supported protocol or muxer recovery while the process is running.

Before enabling automatic restarts, make sure the command can run unattended, credentials are stored safely, logs are retained, and a repeated failure will be visible to you. Confirm from the service manager’s status and logs that it restarts only after an exit, rather than masking a process that is alive but stalled.

Check whether the camera stack or Pi workload is the real cause

If the input comes from a Raspberry Pi camera, distinguish network failure from camera, capture, or encoding instability. Check whether the camera continues producing frames locally and whether the Pi is overloaded before attributing every interruption to the network.

The Raspberry Pi Ltd. Picamera2 manual describes Picamera2 as the current Python camera library for Raspberry Pi OS Bullseye or later and identifies version 0.3.37 as the version described in that manual. Treat that version reference as specific to the manual, not a guarantee that it is the latest release today. The manual describes the legacy PiCamera/camera stack as deprecated and unsupported, and notes that lower-powered devices may struggle with desktop preview software. Verify OS support and camera-library versions against the manual and releases relevant to your installation.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Symptom Likely area to check Next action
FFmpeg exits as soon as the connection drops Process lifetime, not just an in-process reconnect option Inspect the final log lines and configure a service manager or supervisor to restart the command.
HTTP input fails and FFmpeg exits or stalls HTTP reconnect behavior and source availability Check installed HTTP options; set applicable reconnect conditions and retry policy; confirm the HTTP endpoint is reachable again.
RTSP input loses packets or fails over UDP UDP loss, reordering, routing, or firewall behavior Try -rtsp_transport tcp before the RTSP input as a diagnostic, then assess the camera and network path.
Network output reports a write error or broken pipe Output endpoint disconnect and output recovery Check destination availability and evaluate FIFO muxer recovery; match the FIFO format to the destination.
FFmpeg remains alive but no packets move Stalled input or output, rather than a terminated process Use the logs and endpoint checks to locate the stalled side; a process supervisor alone will not necessarily detect a live but stuck process.
Camera capture is unstable even without a network drop Camera stack, OS support, or Pi workload Verify the camera software and operating-system combination and reduce unnecessary workload such as desktop preview on a constrained device.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded recordings, rather than a live camera feed or a general-purpose RTSP relay, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video at the quality supplied, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. It attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube only and does not stream a camera feed. See StreamNeo, or start the free day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does `-reconnect 1` fix RTSP disconnects?

No. FFmpeg’s documented HTTP reconnect options are HTTP-specific; for RTSP, investigate transport and session behavior instead.

Will TCP make an RTSP session reconnect automatically after every outage?

No. TCP is a transport choice that can help diagnose UDP-path loss or reordering, but it is not a documented guarantee of session re-establishment.
