How to Fix an FFmpeg YouTube Stream That Freezes on One Video

A freeze with one video can originate in the source, FFmpeg output, delivery, or YouTube configuration. Use logs and stream-health diagnostics to isolate it before changing settings.

If an FFmpeg stream freezes with one video but not others, treat it as a symptom to isolate—not proof that a particular bitrate, encoder setting, or network component is at fault. Compare local playback with the live output, inspect FFmpeg’s complete logs, and check YouTube Live’s stream-health diagnostics. Change only the setting that the evidence points to.

First locate where the freeze happens

A video can appear frozen because the source stops decoding, FFmpeg stops producing or sending packets, YouTube receives an unhealthy stream, or the viewer’s playback stalls. The same symptom does not identify which point failed. No command, log, file metadata, or health report is available here to establish a single root cause.

  1. Save the exact FFmpeg command and full output around the freeze. Redact the stream key before sharing logs or commands. Note whether FFmpeg continues reporting frames and a speed near real time, whether output packets stop, and whether it reports a connection, decoding, timestamp, or muxing error.
  2. Play or decode the affected file locally. Compare it with a known-good video using the same setup. Check FFmpeg’s input and stream information for the expected audio and video streams, and look for decode or timestamp errors. A local failure points attention toward the source; clean local playback does not by itself prove the live path is healthy.
  3. Check YouTube Live’s stream health at the same time. Use the live control room’s health information, or—if you use the Live API—inspect status.healthStatus and configurationIssues[]. Match any reported issue to the output FFmpeg is actually sending before changing settings.

YouTube’s API health states include good, ok, bad, and noData; stream states include active, inactive, ready, and error. noData means the backend has no health information—it is not confirmation that the stream is healthy. See Google’s LiveStream health-status documentation.

Use YouTube’s report to choose the fix

YouTube’s diagnostics cover configuration problems as well as insufficient incoming video. An issue such as videoIngestionStarved means YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming, so viewers may buffer. It is a clue to investigate delivery and encoder output, not a blanket instruction to raise bitrate. Consult the official configuration-issue catalog and the YouTube Live streaming error messages for the issue actually shown.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Keyframe or GOP warning: verify the encoded output’s keyframe interval and GOP structure.
  • Bitrate warning: compare the stream’s actual delivery rate with the value YouTube reports; do not substitute a guessed universal bitrate.
  • Codec, stream-count, resolution, or frame-rate warning: inspect the output stream structure and settings, rather than changing the source file blindly.
  • Starvation without a specific format warning: determine whether FFmpeg is keeping up and whether packets are reaching YouTube steadily.
  • No useful health data: rely on FFmpeg’s logs and further observation; noData does not settle the diagnosis.

Correct keyframes and GOP only when indicated

YouTube Help recommends sending a keyframe every two seconds—60 frames at 30 fps—and warns that a longer interval can cause buffering. It also says, “YouTube’s pipeline requires a Closed GOP for optimal transcoding.” The API issue catalog flags keyframe intervals longer than four seconds; the two-second target is the more conservative guidance in YouTube Help. These are configuration recommendations, not proof that a long GOP caused this particular freeze.

  1. Check YouTube’s health message for a keyframe or GOP issue.
  2. Inspect the encoder settings and, where possible, the actual encoded output. A configured value alone does not guarantee the delivered stream has that interval or a closed GOP.
  3. If GOP trouble is indicated, target a two-second keyframe interval and closed GOP. At 30 fps, two seconds is 60 frames.
  4. Repeat the same streaming conditions and compare the health message and logs before changing another variable.

See YouTube’s live-streaming error guidance and the API issue definitions.

Check codecs, streams, and output format

When YouTube reports a format or stream-structure problem, verify the output—not just the input file. YouTube’s cited troubleshooting guidance describes H.264 video with AAC or MP3 audio for the relevant configuration. It also flags missing or multiple video/audio streams, interlaced video, frame rates above the configured limit, and incorrect resolution.

  • Confirm there is one intended video stream and one intended audio stream, and that neither is unexpectedly missing or duplicated.
  • Check the selected video and audio codecs against YouTube’s reported issue and guidance.
  • Verify the output is progressive if YouTube reports an interlaced signal.
  • Compare the actual resolution and frame rate with the configured stream and any YouTube warning.

If you send primary and backup streams, compare their corresponding resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe frequency, and audio properties. YouTube flags mismatches in these settings; changing only the primary stream may leave the mismatch unresolved. The specific requirements depend on the configuration and the warning shown. Refer to YouTube’s error guidance and its health issue catalog.

Investigate network errors separately

Reconnect options are relevant when FFmpeg’s logs indicate a transport failure, such as a TCP or TLS disconnect on the RTMP/RTMPS route. Check the route and the applicable options in the FFmpeg protocol documentation. Reconnection can address a disconnection; it does not repair a bad GOP, unsupported or malformed stream, source decode problem, or stream that continues but starves YouTube. Do not treat it as a way to resume from the exact last frame or prevent every freeze.

Do not enlarge queues as a generic freeze fix

FFmpeg’s muxing queue buffers packets while streams are muxed. Its documentation says the defaults should be sufficient for most uses. Increase a queue only when the logs and the relevant queue behavior point to it; changing queue sizes without evidence can obscure the original problem and will not correct an unrelated codec, source, or network fault. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Make one evidence-based change at a time

  1. Record the original command, relevant FFmpeg output, and YouTube health issue.
  2. Choose the one reported or logged problem to address.
  3. Keep the test conditions consistent and stream again.
  4. Compare whether the error, frame progress, packet delivery, or health report changed.
  5. If the symptom remains, return to the logs and health report rather than stacking unrelated changes.
