There are two very different meanings of “download music from YouTube.” You can save a video or playlist for offline playback inside YouTube, or you can create an ordinary audio file such as an MP3. YouTube officially supports the first option. It generally does not provide standalone MP3 downloads for music in its mobile app.
For documentaries, licensed archive material, your own uploads, and public-domain recordings, there are also legitimate ways to obtain a transferable file. The method you choose should match both the format you need and your rights to use the recording.
1. Download music in the YouTube Music app
Best for: listening offline on a phone or tablet without needing an MP3 file.
- Open the YouTube Music app and sign in.
- Find the song, album, or playlist.
- Tap the three-dot Menu button and choose Download. On an album or playlist page, you can also tap the download arrow.
- Manage saved content through Profile picture → Settings → Downloads and storage.
YouTube Music Premium is generally required to download music and music videos. These downloads are controlled by the app: they do not appear as MP3 files in your phone’s normal file browser and cannot normally be moved to another music player.

The device must reconnect to the internet at least once every 30 days to keep Premium downloads available. Storage use depends on the amount of music and the selected audio or video quality. Smart Downloads can automatically save recently played music; YouTube’s current help documentation says the feature can download up to 200 songs.
2. Use YouTube Premium for offline playback
Best for: watching or listening to a YouTube video when you only need access inside YouTube.
On a phone or tablet
- Open the video in the YouTube app.
- Tap Download below the video.
- Choose the quality if YouTube offers a choice.
- Find it later under Library → Downloads, or through the Downloads section shown in the app.
On a computer
- Sign in to the YouTube account with Premium.
- Open the video’s watch page in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Opera.
- Click Download below the video.
- Open Downloads from YouTube’s left-hand menu to play it offline.
This is not an MP3 download. YouTube’s offline copies are encrypted and account-linked, so they are intended for playback through YouTube rather than editing, archiving, or transferring to a USB drive. Offline availability is also time-limited: a device normally needs to reconnect within 29 days, although some locations use a shorter 48-hour period.
3. Download a music video you uploaded to your own channel
Best for: recovering an MP4 copy of your own upload.

- Relax knowing your card is backed by a 10-year limited warranty by SanDisk
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Choose Content in the left-hand panel.
- Locate the video.
- Open its three-dot menu and select Download.
YouTube usually supplies an MP4 in 720p or 360p, depending on the video and the available version. It may not match the original master file, so a local backup or cloud archive remains important for future projects.
The download option may be unavailable if the video was removed, received a copyright or Community Guidelines strike, uses a preapproved audio track, or has already been downloaded five times in the previous 24 hours. YouTube Studio cannot be used to download somebody else’s video.
4. Export your channel with Google Takeout
Best for: downloading many of your own uploads at once.
- Sign in to the Google Account connected to the channel.
- Open Google Takeout.
- Select the YouTube data you want to export.
- Continue through the export settings and choose Create export.
- Download the archive when Google sends the notification or makes it available.
Takeout creates an archive rather than instantly handing you one audio file. Large channels may produce several archive parts, and the process can take time. If expected videos are missing, check whether they were uploaded to a YouTube Brand Account; you may need to switch to that account before creating the export.

- Load apps faster with A1-rated performance[3].
This method exports your own YouTube data. It does not delete videos from Google’s servers and does not grant rights to download recordings owned by somebody else.
5. Extract audio with yt-dlp when you have permission
Best for: turning your own upload, a public-domain recording, or a permission-cleared video into an audio file.
yt-dlp is a command-line program. Its audio-extraction function needs both FFmpeg and FFprobe installed and available in your system’s PATH. After installing the current version from the project’s official source, a basic authorized conversion is:
yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 "VIDEO_URL"
For a lossless output format where the source and your rights permit it, use:

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Rank #4
yt-dlp -x --audio-format flac "VIDEO_URL"
The -x option extracts audio, while --audio-format tells FFmpeg which format to create. Supported choices include MP3, M4A, AAC, ALAC, FLAC, OPUS, VORBIS, and WAV.
Converting to MP3 does not improve the recording. If the YouTube source is already compressed, converting it to another lossy format can reduce quality further. When the source provides an audio format you can use directly, retaining it may be preferable to re-encoding.
Typical errors
| Problem | Likely cause or remedy |
|---|---|
ffmpeg not found |
FFmpeg is not installed or its executable directory is not in PATH. |
| Video unavailable | The upload may be private, removed, age-restricted, region-restricted, or members-only. |
| Login required | The video requires authentication. Do not attempt to bypass access controls; obtain the file from the rights holder instead. |
| Output sounds no better | The source quality limits the result. A higher MP3 bitrate cannot restore missing audio detail. |
Use this workflow only for content you own or are expressly authorized to download. YouTube’s terms restrict downloading or otherwise using content unless the service authorizes it, applicable law permits it, or the relevant rights holders have given permission. Do not use a command-line downloader to rip commercial songs simply because they are publicly viewable.
Which method should you use?
| Your goal | Most suitable method | What you receive |
|---|---|---|
| Listen offline on a phone | YouTube Music download | App-managed offline playback |
| Watch a video without internet | YouTube Premium download | Encrypted YouTube offline copy |
| Recover one of your uploads | YouTube Studio | MP4, usually 720p or 360p |
| Archive your own channel | Google Takeout | Downloadable archive |
| Create an audio file from cleared material | yt-dlp with FFmpeg |
MP3, FLAC, WAV, or another selected format |
What not to assume
- YouTube Premium does not give you MP3 files. It provides offline playback inside YouTube or YouTube Music.
- The YouTube mobile app does not offer a general audio-only MP3 download.
- YouTube Music downloads are not permanent files. Premium devices must periodically reconnect to the internet.
- YouTube Studio is not a downloader for every video. It is intended for your own channel uploads.
- A Creative Commons label is not automatically a download service. Check the license, attribution terms, and any restrictions. If the creator supplies a direct download, that is usually the clearest source for the file.
FAQ
Can I download a YouTube song as an MP3 with YouTube Premium?

Where are YouTube Music downloads stored?
They are managed inside the YouTube Music app and are not normally exposed as ordinary audio files in your phone’s file browser.
Can I download someone else’s YouTube video from YouTube Studio?
No. YouTube Studio’s download control is for videos uploaded to your own channel. For another creator’s work, use a creator-provided download or obtain explicit permission.
Is yt-dlp legal to use for YouTube music?
The software itself has legitimate uses, but the download must be authorized. Use it for your own uploads, public-domain material, or recordings for which you have explicit permission, and follow YouTube’s terms and applicable copyright law.
The Bottom Line
For simple offline listening, use YouTube Music or YouTube Premium and expect the content to remain inside the app. For a real audio file, limit the process to music you own or are authorized to use: recover your uploads through YouTube Studio or Takeout, or use yt-dlp with FFmpeg for permission-cleared material. A public YouTube link alone is not permission to make an MP3.
