To create an NDI stream, run a sender suited to your source—Scan Converter for a computer screen, vMix for a production output, NDI Capture for an iPhone screen, or an NDI-capable camera app for phone video—then select that source in vMix or another NDI receiver on the network. Sending a source into vMix and sending a vMix output out over NDI are separate workflows.
Choose the right NDI sender for your source

NDI Scan Converter’s Mac documentation describes choosing the whole desktop or an application window from its File menu. The macOS sound settings determine the captured audio, and the tool includes a Mute Audio option. NDI’s Windows Screen Capture HX documentation describes sharing desktop video and audio from the NDI Launcher, with controls for bandwidth, resolution, frame rate, audio source, pointer capture, and optional KVM. Its HX path uses GPU-accelerated H.264 or HEVC.
NDI’s product page lists Scan Converter version 6.3.2 and a minimum 1 Gbps local-area network and 6 GB RAM for the Mac offering. Treat those as that product page’s stated requirements, not universal NDI requirements for every format or device. NDI Capture’s iPhone product page lists version 1.8; app versions and capabilities can change.
Prepare the network and receiver
Connect the sender and receiving computer to a network that permits NDI traffic and discovery. vMix describes NDI operation over a Gigabit-enabled network and says sources on the network can be added as NDI inputs. NDI’s 1 Gbps minimum applies to its listed Mac Scan Converter offering; actual capacity needs vary with the selected format, source, and network conditions.

For vMix, open Add Input → NDI / Desktop Capture and select the detected sender. vMix displays sources with preview thumbnails and groups them by computer or device. For another NDI receiver, open its source browser and choose the advertised sender; NDI Scan Converter can also be viewed in an NDI-enabled application such as Video Monitor.
Create a desktop NDI source
Mac: Scan Converter
- Install NDI Tools and launch Scan Converter.
- Open File and choose the full desktop or the application window to share.
- Set the desired sound source in macOS sound settings. Check that Mute Audio is off if you need sound.
- Keep Scan Converter running while the receiver discovers and adds its NDI source.
Windows: Screen Capture HX
- Launch Screen Capture HX from the NDI Launcher.
- Choose the screen-sharing settings relevant to your production: bandwidth, resolution, frame rate, audio source, and whether to capture the pointer. KVM is optional.
- Keep the capture sender running and add its detected source in the receiving application.
HX’s H.264/HEVC capture path is GPU-accelerated. The documentation does not establish one guaranteed bitrate for a given resolution, so choose settings based on the sender’s available options and the receiver’s compatibility rather than assuming a fixed network rate.

Send a vMix production output over NDI
To transmit from vMix, enable the output you need in Settings → Outputs / NDI. Output 1 is Program and carries the Master stereo mix. Other outputs can be configured independently; cameras, calls, and audio inputs can also be exported as NDI sources. The number of outputs available depends on the vMix edition.
- Open Settings → Outputs / NDI.
- Enable the required output and configure it for the content you intend to send.
- On the receiving device, open its NDI source list and select the vMix output.
This is the outbound direction. To bring a phone, desktop, or another NDI source into vMix instead, use Add Input → NDI / Desktop Capture and choose the sender.

Use a phone as an NDI source
Share an iPhone screen
Use NDI Capture when the material is the iPhone display—for example, an app or presentation screen. Install and launch the app, then select its NDI source in the receiving software. NDI’s product page identifies NDI Capture as an iPhone screen-sharing app; it is not the phone-camera workflow.
Send phone camera video
Use an NDI-capable camera app rather than a screen-capture app. NDI’s product finder lists Larix Broadcaster for iOS and Android with NDI HX2 output. Since mobile app features can change by platform and version, confirm that the installed edition offers NDI HX2 before building a production around it. Once the app is sending, select its advertised source in vMix or another NDI receiver.

Choose standard NDI or NDI HX
NDI High Bandwidth and NDI HX make different network and encoding trade-offs; neither is best in every setup. NDI’s encoding documentation describes HX as offering similar video quality at a lower bitrate, which can help on constrained links such as Wi-Fi or WAN. Its codec matrix lists SpeedHQ for High Bandwidth and H.264/H.265 for HX 2–3.
- Choose a mode supported by both sender and receiver.
- Consider HX when available network bandwidth is constrained; its lower bitrate comes with a compressed codec path.
- Check GPU capability for HX screen capture, which NDI documents as GPU-accelerated.
- Do not assume a particular bitrate or visual result without checking the actual sender settings and network conditions.
Troubleshoot missing, silent, or unstable sources
vMix cannot see the source
- Confirm the sender application is running and actively sharing.
- Check that both devices are connected to the intended network and that its firewall or network policy permits NDI traffic and discovery.
- Check the sender and receiver’s network interfaces if either device has multiple connections.
- Use vMix’s NDI input list to refresh your search and check the source grouping by computer or device.
Exact firewall ports are not specified here; do not guess port values. Consult the current NDI and network-product documentation for the relevant configuration.

The source appears but has no audio
Check the sender’s selected audio source and mute setting. With Mac Scan Converter, verify the macOS sound selection and ensure Mute Audio is not enabled. With Windows Screen Capture HX, inspect the configured audio source.
A wireless source stutters
vMix offers Low Bandwidth Mode and Increase Buffer Size for an NDI input. Its guide says the increased buffer can improve smoothness on unstable or wireless networks at the cost of approximately five frames of added latency. Try the low-bandwidth option where appropriate; if the problem persists, check network capacity and sender settings.
HX does not work with the receiver
Check that the receiver supports the sender’s HX codec and mode, and confirm that the sender’s GPU can handle its capture path. If compatibility is uncertain, test another supported NDI mode rather than assuming all receivers accept the same HX variants.
