Choose a setting for the destination platform, codec, resolution, and frame rate, then make sure your upload connection and encoder can sustain it. For YouTube H.264 at 1080p60, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps; Twitch’s conventional 1080p60 example is 6,000 kbps. Those figures are platform-specific, not interchangeable.
Recommended live-stream bitrates at a glance
The figures below are platform-published ingest recommendations or example profiles, not independent test results. YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec. Twitch’s conventional examples are distinct from its Enhanced Broadcasting configurations.
YouTube Live
| Output | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1 or H.265/HEVC recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | not stated in the listed guidance for this frame rate |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended encoder-to-platform ingest bitrates, not guaranteed viewer playback rates. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for different devices and connections. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance also lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1.
Twitch conventional examples
| Output | Example bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 6,000 kbps |
| 1080p30 | 4,500 kbps |
| 720p60 | 4,500 kbps |
| 720p30 | 3,000 kbps |
Twitch’s conventional profiles use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. They are examples, not universal limits for every account or mode. See Twitch’s Broadcasting Guidelines.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to choose the right bitrate
- Choose the platform and ingest mode. Start with the platform’s current encoder guidance. Do not transfer a YouTube H.264 recommendation to Twitch, or apply it to AV1 or HEVC without checking that codec’s guidance.
- Set a sustainable resolution and frame rate. A higher resolution or frame rate demands more bandwidth and encoding headroom. If your setup drops frames or disconnects at the target settings, lower the output demands rather than forcing a higher bitrate.
- Check real upload performance. YouTube recommends running a speed test. Use the upload capacity you can sustain reliably, not only the headline speed on your internet plan, and leave room for variation.
- Use the recommended bitrate for your exact combination. Match platform, codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 1080p60 is 17 Mbps, whereas its AV1/HEVC recommendation for the same output is 12 Mbps.
- Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval for the profiles covered here. YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe frequency, with a maximum interval of 4 seconds. Twitch’s conventional examples also use CBR and 2-second keyframes.
- Test with representative content. Run a test using similar audio and motion to the real stream, then monitor stream health. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
When weighing two settings, compare platform and mode, codec, resolution, frame rate, sustainable upload, and encoder load. More bitrate can help only if the platform, connection, and encoder can use it; it will not fix an overloaded encoder or unstable network.
Encoder, audio, and compatibility settings
YouTube compatibility details
YouTube’s live ingest uses RTMP or RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. Its guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio and specifies 128 kbps for stereo audio in advanced settings. For video it recommends square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 8-bit SDR. For HDR, the guidance recommends H.265/HEVC and 10-bit; it says AV1 is not supported for HDR.

When encoding load is the problem
Encoder overload is different from insufficient upload bandwidth. Twitch notes that x264 encoding can tax the CPU and reduce game frame rate, while GPU encoding such as NVIDIA NVENC uses a dedicated encoder. If encoding load is the bottleneck, test a supported hardware encoder or reduce output demands before considering a hardware purchase.
Twitch Enhanced Broadcasting and 1440p
Enhanced Broadcasting is a separate Twitch path that can configure multiple client-side encodes automatically. Its configuration can vary between sessions to balance viewer experience, system performance, and available bandwidth. Twitch’s 1440p/2K offering is tied to Enhanced Broadcasting; Twitch’s June 17, 2026 announcement said 2K streaming was available to Partners and Affiliates and uses HEVC. Check current availability in your account and Twitch’s Enhanced Broadcasting documentation and 2K streaming guidance before relying on those options.

Troubleshoot instability and quality problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Stream disconnects or health warnings appear | Upload capacity or connection stability | Run an upload speed test, reduce the video bitrate or output demands, and test again. |
| Dropped frames while the connection is otherwise stable | Encoder or system load | Check encoder load; try a supported hardware encoder or lower resolution/frame rate. |
| Settings are rejected or the stream will not ingest as expected | Platform, codec, or encoder configuration mismatch | Recheck the destination’s current ingest guidance, codec, CBR setting, and keyframe interval. |
| Viewers report different playback quality from the sent stream | Viewer playback rendition | Remember that YouTube transcodes live ingest into multiple formats; the creator’s ingest settings and a viewer’s playback rendition are related but not identical. |
OBS’s troubleshooting guidance includes lowering video bitrate when the stream connection is unstable: OBS stream connection troubleshooting. Twitch’s advice is to favor stability over pushing quality that risks dropped frames or strains the connection.
