Compare average view duration and audience-retention reports for the stream and its source videos over matched dates and available filters. Use the retention curves or key moments to see where viewers stay or leave; keep concurrent viewers separate, because they measure simultaneous audience size, not how long each view lasted.
What to compare—and what each metric means
| Metric | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Average view duration | Estimated average minutes watched per view. | Compare across matched dates and filters, then interpret alongside content length and the retention curve. YouTube defines live-stream average view duration as “Estimated average minutes watched per view for a live stream.” YouTube Help |
| Audience retention / key moments | How well different moments held viewers’ attention, and where attention changed. | Inspect the report rather than relying on a single summary number. YouTube Help |
| Watch time | Total viewing accumulated. | Use it to assess total consumption, remembering that it reflects reach and number of views as well as viewing duration. YouTube Analytics |
| Average and peak concurrent viewers | How many people watched simultaneously on the live stream. | Include only as context for live audience size, not as a retention measure. YouTube Help |
| Views | Starts counted under YouTube’s view definition. | Do not treat a view count by itself as viewing depth; use watch time, average view duration, and retention too. YouTube Help |
How to make a fair comparison in YouTube Studio
- Open analytics for each item. In YouTube Studio, open the live video and each source video, then go to Analytics and the Engagement or audience-retention view. Look at average view duration, watch time, and retention key moments where available. YouTube describes the retention report as showing how well different moments held viewers’ attention. YouTube Help
- Match the reporting window and filters. Choose dates that address your question and use the same dates and available filters, such as geography, for the stream and source videos. State the dates and filters when sharing the result. Advanced Mode can expand reports and export data, although report availability varies. YouTube Help
- Separate live playback from on-demand playback. YouTube Analytics provides Live, On demand, and Live & on demand filters. For an ended stream, make clear whether your figures refer to its live playback, its archive, or both. YouTube Help
- Compare per-view behavior before audience size. Start with average view duration and the retention report. If useful, show average or peak concurrent viewers in a separate context column; neither is the average time an individual watched.
- Put the result in context. Note the stream’s continuous length, the source videos’ lengths, and any differences in traffic context. Compare against suitable periods or videos from your own channel when possible, rather than presenting a universal benchmark.
Why a 24/7 stream is not a like-for-like video comparison
A continuous stream and a shorter source video offer different viewing experiences. Viewers can enter a stream at different points and leave at different times; a source video has a defined start and end. Traffic sources and audience intent may also differ. As a result, a stream’s average view duration cannot by itself show whether it “beats” its source videos, and retention curves may not be directly comparable.
YouTube’s “typical retention” feature compares a channel’s 10 latest videos of similar length. It is a within-channel comparison capability, not a population-wide benchmark and not a validation of a 24/7 stream versus shorter source videos. YouTube Help
How to present the findings
- Lead with average view duration and describe the retention curve or key moments that stand out.
- Give the date range, content type filters, and other relevant filters used.
- Include watch time as a total-consumption measure, but do not equate it with retention: it is affected by reach and views as well as duration.
- Describe concurrent viewers separately if they help explain live audience size.
- Identify whether the stream figures cover live playback, the archive, or both, and acknowledge differences in content length and viewing context.
If you report views, note that YouTube says that beginning August 24, 2026, views are counted when a video starts to play across Shorts, long-form VOD, and live streams. This dated definition makes view counts starts, not a measure of how long someone watched. YouTube Help

Limits to keep in mind
- YouTube Analytics data is based on Video ID and is processed and despammed; it measures different information from the Live Control Room. The two surfaces may not report identical numbers. YouTube Help
- Some analytics data may be limited, and report availability can vary. YouTube said its Studio experience was gradually rolling out an update beginning July 2026, so the labels or route may not look identical for every account. YouTube Help
- No official universal expected-retention figure is established for a continuous stream compared with the shorter videos it uses. Treat the comparison as a channel-specific analysis, not proof of a general platform norm.
Or let it run in the cloud
