There is no single monthly total for looping an FFmpeg stream on a VPS: the bill depends on the server plan, media storage, output bitrate, delivery path, and any bandwidth overage. As official USD plan examples, DigitalOcean lists Basic Droplets at $4/month with 10 GiB SSD and 500 GiB transfer, or $6/month with 25 GiB SSD and 1,000 GiB transfer. AWS Lightsail lists a Linux public-IPv4 bundle at $5/month with 20 GB SSD and 1 TB transfer. These are provider plan examples, not a quote for every region or configuration.
What makes up the monthly cost?
Budget for three separate components: the VPS bundle, any storage or backups beyond what it includes, and outbound transfer beyond the plan allowance. The right comparison is the whole bundle—compute, included disk, and transfer—not just the headline server price.
- VPS: monthly compute charge, bundled disk, and included transfer.
- Extra storage: additional media disk and optional snapshots or backups.
- Network overage: charges that may apply when measured transfer exceeds the allowance. Rules depend on the provider and region.
Official VPS plan examples
The following are USD list-price examples published by the providers; prices, quotas, and regional terms can change, so confirm the selected plan before ordering. DigitalOcean says Droplets moved to per-second billing from January 1, 2026, with a minimum charge of 60 seconds or $0.01.

Storage: include the media and any recovery copies
Check the VPS disk against the size of the media files you intend to keep on the server, along with space needed by the operating system and working files. A plan’s included SSD may be enough for a small loop, but longer or higher-bitrate recordings can require additional capacity.

AWS Lightsail lists block storage from 8 GB at $0.10 per allocated GB-month. Its pricing page separately lists snapshots at $0.05/GB-month. These are Lightsail-specific listed rates; do not apply them to another provider or assume a snapshot is included in the VPS price. See Lightsail storage pricing.
Bandwidth depends on where viewers receive the video
VPS pushes one stream to a platform’s ingest
If FFmpeg sends one output feed to a third-party streaming ingest, the VPS sends that upstream feed. Do not multiply the VPS transfer by the audience size unless the VPS itself is delivering the video to those viewers. The platform’s ingest and viewer-delivery behavior is separate from the VPS provider’s billing rules.

VPS serves viewers directly
If viewers connect to the VPS, outbound transfer grows with the number of concurrent viewers, their delivered bitrate, and how long they watch. In that architecture, calculate viewer delivery as well as the stream sent by FFmpeg.
Estimate transfer from the actual output
A useful starting point is bitrate × streaming seconds × number of outputs or destinations, converted from bits to bytes. Add for protocol and container overhead where appropriate, and compare the estimate with the provider’s own transfer meter and accounting conventions. There is no universal bitrate or overhead figure in the provider plan descriptions, so use the actual encoded output and the provider’s measurement.

For Lightsail, inbound and outbound traffic count toward the transfer quota, but AWS says only outbound traffic above quota is charged. Its regional overage rates vary and start at $0.09/GB. Confirm the rate and rules for the selected region; this starting rate is not a DigitalOcean rate. AWS Lightsail pricing and transfer terms.
How FFmpeg settings affect the server choice
Looping a file is not the same as transcoding it. FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option loops an input indefinitely. The -c copy option selects stream copy, avoiding re-encoding when the input and output formats permit it; -re reads input at its native frame rate. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for the options and their constraints.

When the workflow transcodes, CPU capacity and codec settings matter in addition to storage and transfer. Benchmark the actual media and output settings on the intended server rather than assuming a small plan will encode reliably.

- Choose the delivery architecture. Decide whether the VPS sends one feed to a streaming ingest or serves viewers itself. The latter requires estimating viewer traffic too.
- Measure the output bitrate and destinations. Use the actual FFmpeg output bitrate, streaming duration, and number of outputs to estimate transfer. Include overhead and check the provider meter.
- Size disk requirements. Total the media you will store, system and working space, and any recovery copies. Compare that with the plan’s bundled disk.
- Select a plan for the workload. Compare CPU and memory needs—especially if transcoding—alongside included disk and transfer.
- Add separate storage and overage. Apply only the chosen provider’s current regional storage and transfer rates to the amount beyond its included allowance.
Without a bitrate, destination, hosting region, storage requirement, and uptime target, a precise monthly total would be misleading. Use the plan examples as starting points, then calculate from those inputs and verify current provider terms.
