Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose music only when its license clearly covers the platform and every use you plan: the live broadcast, replay, clips, monetized uploads, and relevant territories. A song being free, included in a game, or available through a music subscription does not by itself give you permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content, while Twitch prohibits sharing music you do not own or have rights to share—including background music.
Start with the stream’s destination and purpose
Decide what the music should do—set a mood, fill quiet moments, provide transitions, or be the focus of a music stream. Keep it low enough that speech and game audio remain clear; that is a production choice, not a platform rule.
Before choosing tracks, map where the audio will go: Twitch, YouTube Live, both, an archived VOD, clips, or a repost elsewhere. Permission for a live broadcast does not necessarily include those later uses or other platforms. Check each destination and format separately.
Check the rights before choosing a track
Prefer music you composed and control, public-domain works whose relevant rights you have checked, or a library track whose license expressly covers your planned use. A song’s composition and a particular sound recording can have different rights holders, so verify the recording you intend to play as well as the underlying song.

Read the actual track and plan terms for platform coverage, live and archive use, clips, territories, monetization, attribution, channel allowlisting, and whether permission can change or be revoked. Save a copy of the terms and proof of permission alongside the track details. Do not rely on a “royalty-free” or “free” label as a substitute for those checks.
- Original music: Confirm you control the rights in both the composition and the recording, including any collaborators’ contributions.
- Public-domain music: Check the status of both the composition and the particular recording in the territories where you stream or publish.
- Music libraries: Confirm that the exact track and subscription tier cover live use on your platform and any VOD, clip, or repost plans.
- Commercial tracks: A purchase or personal streaming subscription ordinarily does not establish permission to rebroadcast a track. Twitch’s DJ Program FAQ search-result excerpt likewise cautions that subscribing or buying music is typically not enough by itself; check the current program terms and your territory.
Use YouTube’s options carefully
YouTube defines safe music as public-domain music or music for which you have received permission from the copyright owner. Its Tips to find safe music page warns that a “free” label or written credit does not prevent a Content ID flag. YouTube identifies its Audio Library as its official music and sound-effects option for videos. If you use a third-party track, check its license rather than assuming a label guarantees a claim-free stream. YouTube also notes that a track safe for a Short may not be safe in a longer video.

YouTube scans all live streams for matches to third-party content. If copyrighted material remains after a warning, the stream can be interrupted or terminated. A rights holder may need to add a licensed channel to its Content ID allowlist to prevent live restrictions. If a stream is archived, it may receive a Content ID claim after it ends.
Creator Music is not a solution for live-stream music: YouTube’s Creator Music usage details exclude livestreams and Shorts. Its tracks also have usage and territory restrictions, so check the applicable terms even for eligible long-form videos.

Check Twitch and game audio separately
Twitch’s Community Guidelines prohibit sharing music you do not own or have rights to share, including music played in the background. Twitch’s November 11, 2020 guidance advised streamers not to play recorded music without all necessary rights or permission. It also recommended checking a game’s EULA; some games provide an option to disable music while streaming.
That 2020 Twitch post named Soundstripe, Monstercat Gold, Chillhop, Epidemic Sound, and NCS as rights-cleared library examples at the time. Treat those names as historical examples, not a guarantee of current availability, endorsement, or coverage. Verify the present terms for the specific track, plan, platform, and territory. If a game’s streaming permission is unclear and it offers a soundtrack toggle, turn the music off rather than assuming it is cleared.

Compare music choices by the permission they grant
Do not rank a provider by its catalog size or “stream-safe” label alone. Compare the actual permissions and practical fit:
| Choice | What to verify | Potential fit |
|---|---|---|
| Original music | Rights in the composition and recording, collaborators’ permissions, and all intended platform and archive uses. | A distinctive sound when you control and can document the relevant rights. |
| YouTube Audio Library | Track-specific terms and whether the intended use is on YouTube; follow any attribution conditions shown for a track. | YouTube videos and streams where the selected audio and use meet the library’s terms. |
| Third-party music library | Exact plan and track coverage for each platform, live use, VODs, clips, territories, monetization, attribution, and Content ID handling. | A broader catalog when its current license expressly matches your workflow. |
| Licensed commercial track | Written permission for the specific recording and composition, platform, live use, archive, territories, and monetization. | A particular song when the required rights have been secured and documented. |
Prepare and test before going live
- Make a use list. Write down every destination and afterlife for the audio: live platforms, VODs, clips, and reposts.
- Verify permissions. Check the exact recording and license against each intended use, territory, attribution rule, and monetization plan. Save the terms and permission evidence.
- Check the platform’s current guidance. Review YouTube’s music and live-stream help or Twitch’s current guidelines and relevant program terms; do not assume an older recommendation still applies.
- Inspect game settings. Read the current EULA or official streaming policy and disable in-game music if the permission is unclear and the game allows it.
- Test audio routing and levels. Confirm speech remains intelligible and check what your live broadcast and recording capture. Muting music from a VOD may reduce archive exposure, but it does not grant permission to broadcast the music live.
- Keep a track log. Record the track, recording, source, license or permission, relevant dates, platforms, and any allowlisting or attribution steps.
Troubleshoot a claim or interruption
- YouTube warns you during the live stream: The system may have matched third-party content. Remove or mute the track promptly if you cannot confirm the needed rights; continued content can lead to interruption or termination.
- You have a license but YouTube still restricts the stream: Check that the license covers the exact use and channel. Ask the rights holder whether it must add your channel to its Content ID allowlist.
- A replay receives a claim after the stream: Live permission may not cover the archived recording. Review the license’s VOD and monetization terms and address the claim through the applicable platform process.
- You are considering a Twitch music subscription: Do not treat payment for access as broadcast permission. Confirm that the service’s current terms authorize Twitch use for your account, territory, and intended live and recorded uses.
- Game music is the source: Check the game’s current EULA or official streaming policy. Disable the soundtrack if permission is unclear and the option exists.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your plan is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded recordings rather than broadcast a live camera or live music performance, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It accepts uploads up to 4K 60fps as made, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. For Indian creators, UPI works. This does not grant music rights: clear the recordings and any music in them for YouTube and the intended archive use. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
