YouTube Live viewing is growing overall, but not every part of it is: in Q2 2026, broad YouTube Live viewing hours rose year over year while YouTube Gaming hours fell. The difference is that YouTube Live includes far more than gaming, from Q&As and classes to IRL talk and variety programming.
What the latest figures show
Two measures point to growth, though they describe different things and come from different sources:
- YouTube said that over 30% of its daily logged-in viewers watched live content on an average day in Q2 2025. This is YouTube’s own platform-reported audience share, not an independent estimate of what caused viewing to grow. YouTube’s 2025 Live update gives the figure.
- Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet reported 12.97 billion hours watched on YouTube Live in Q2 2026, up 18.0% year over year. In the same report, YouTube Gaming registered 1.79 billion hours, down 18.9%. These are separate categories in the report, not contradictory readings of the same audience. The Q2 2026 report is the source for both figures.
The report also put YouTube Live at 60.3% of tracked total livestream hours in Q2 2026, compared with 58.8% in Q1 2026. That share applies to the report’s tracked-platform sample; it does not describe every livestream watched worldwide. The report says this is its first edition to include broad YouTube Live separately from YouTube Gaming, with historical data added for comparison. It also cautions that gaming-only tracking misses some of the importance of IRL talk and variety.
Why broad YouTube Live may be attracting viewers
Live creates a shared, interactive experience
YouTube describes live chat and the shared experience of watching in real time as ways for creators and viewers to interact and build community. Its Help page says that a shared experience like a livestream can help build a deeper sense of community between creator and viewer. This is YouTube’s explanation of live’s appeal, not a measured estimate of how much interaction contributes to growth. YouTube Help: Why choose live

Live covers many interests beyond games
YouTube points to gameplay as well as Q&As, classes, workshops, travel, tours, food reviews and crafts. These formats give viewers reasons to join for instruction, conversation, events or a creator’s ongoing activity rather than for a game alone. The Q2 2026 report’s emphasis on IRL talk and variety helps explain why a gaming-only measure can move differently from the broader Live category.
YouTube is adding discovery and participation features
YouTube announced support for simultaneous horizontal and vertical broadcasts with unified chat, mobile reactions to other live events or creators, and AI-generated highlights that can be turned into Shorts. The company says these features are intended to help creators get discovered and extend engagement. The announcement does not report a measured audience lift from any of them, so they are plausible platform strategies, not demonstrated causes of the growth figures.

Television viewing is relevant context, not proof of a Live effect
YouTube has described viewing on connected TVs as part of its broader audience and programming mix. In 2024, it cited more than 1 billion hours of YouTube content watched on TVs globally per day. That figure covers YouTube overall, not livestreams specifically, so it should not be treated as evidence that television viewing caused Live growth. YouTube’s 2024 post citing Nielsen provides the broader context.
Why growth headlines can disagree
Before comparing headlines, check whether they use the same category, period, source and metric. Broad YouTube Live includes more than YouTube Gaming, while a gaming report may exclude talk and variety streams. A category can therefore lose viewing hours even as the broader live category gains them.

How to interpret a livestream’s audience metrics
YouTube’s Live Control Room and Analytics use several measures that are not interchangeable. YouTube’s metrics guide defines the key terms:

- Peak concurrent viewers: the highest simultaneous audience reached during the stream.
- Live views: the number of times the stream was viewed while it was live.

- Average view duration: the average time viewers spend watching.
- Total watch time: viewing time accumulated across the audience; post-stream Analytics provides this and other processed measures.
YouTube notes that Analytics data is processed and despammed, so it can differ from the Live Control Room figures. For meaningful comparisons, keep the platform, category, time period and metric consistent.

The available figures support the conclusion that broad YouTube Live viewing grew in the measured Q2 2026 period, while the separately reported gaming segment declined. YouTube’s Q2 2025 audience statistic also shows that live reached a substantial share of its logged-in viewers on an average day.

They do not establish that community, vertical video, mobile reactions, recommendations or TV viewing individually caused the increase. YouTube explains why it builds live features, but the cited announcements do not quantify their effects. Keep those explanations distinct from the measured viewing totals.
