The most reliable way to record a remote podcast is to capture each participant locally on a separate track, then confirm the files are safely uploaded before ending the session. That preserves more editing flexibility than relying only on a live call recording, which can be compressed or disrupted by internet problems. For guests who need a simpler setup, a video call, double-ender, or phone call can work—with different trade-offs.
Choose a recording method
All remote interviews need an internet connection for people to talk to one another. The difference is where the audio is recorded and how much control you have over the files afterward.
| Method | Best fit | Main trade-off | Plan for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dedicated remote recording platform | A balance of guest convenience, separate tracks, and recording quality | Participants need a compatible device and browser or app; plan limits and supported devices can change | Create a session, check inputs, invite guests, record, verify uploads, then download or edit the tracks |
| Video-conferencing software | Guests already know the tool and need a quick, familiar option | Call recordings can be compressed and internet-dependent; separate-track options vary | Enable separate participant audio and higher-quality audio settings where available, and test beforehand |
| Double-ender | More control over locally captured files | Each person must record, transfer files, and synchronize them afterward | Record locally at both ends, make a clap or countdown sync marker, collect the files, and align them in editing software |
| Phone call | A guest with limited internet access or low technical confidence, or a backup plan | Phone audio is heavily compressed and may arrive as one mixed track | Tell the guest how the call will be recorded and expect fewer options for editing or repair |
Dedicated recording platforms
Platforms such as Riverside and Zencastr describe recording participants on their own devices and keeping separate tracks. Zencastr also says it backs up recordings to the cloud during a session. These features help protect the captured files and make it easier to edit each voice independently, but they do not make the live conversation independent of the internet: guests still need a connection to communicate, and file uploads still depend on connectivity.
Check the current platform documentation for plan limits, device support, and recording modes before inviting a guest. For example, Zencastr’s FAQ accessed October 3, 2026, lists support for up to six participants including the host, separate participant tracks, and no recording time limit; its stated browser and app support may change. Its recording-mode documentation describes audio-only, audio with video, and separate audio/video modes, with the latter supporting up to 4K. These are vendor-stated product details, not a guarantee that every mode or limit applies to every plan.

Video calls
A familiar call is often the easiest choice for a guest, but a recording made from the call can reflect the connection and the service’s compression. If you use Zoom or another conferencing tool, look for settings that save separate audio files for each participant and enable higher-quality audio options where available. A test recording is the best way to check what your particular setup produces.
Double-ender
In a double-ender, each participant records their own microphone locally while speaking over a call. This gives you the local files to edit, but you rely on every person to start, keep running, and deliver a recording. A portable recorder is one possible way to capture a guest’s local audio; it is not required for every setup.
Phone call
Use a phone call when accessibility and simplicity matter more than fidelity, or as a fallback if a guest cannot join another way. Phone audio has limited bandwidth, and the recording may be a single mixed track unless you add appropriate routing or equipment.

Prepare the guest and recording space
Send a short prep note before the interview. An entry-level USB microphone can sound better than a laptop’s built-in microphone; a mixer or audio interface is not automatically necessary. Ask the guest to wear headphones or earbuds so their speakers do not feed the other person’s voice back into the microphone.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Choose a quiet room with soft furnishings where possible. Soft surfaces can reduce reflections compared with a bare, echoing room.
- Use the intended microphone and headphones, and join from the device you plan to record on.
- Close unnecessary applications if the computer or internet connection is under strain.
- If the call is unstable, a wired Ethernet connection may help. Local recording still matters because a stable call alone does not give you separate local files.
- If using a platform, verify its current browser or app requirements with the guest in advance. Zencastr’s current documentation, for example, lists Chrome, Edge, and Brave on desktop and an iOS app; support details can change.
Run a preflight check
- Confirm the recording method. Decide whether you will use a dedicated platform, a call recording, or a double-ender. Tell the guest what they need to open and whether they must make a local recording.
- Check inputs and outputs. Select the intended microphone, headphones, and camera if recording video. Make sure the recording is not using the laptop microphone by mistake.
- Make a short test. Record a few seconds, then listen back for the right microphone, intelligible levels, echo, and obvious background noise.
- Check the recording mode. If separate tracks matter, confirm that the platform or call settings are actually creating separate participant audio files.
- Confirm upload status. With a local-recording platform, look for confirmation that participant tracks are uploading. A conversation continuing on screen is not proof that every recording file has finished uploading.
Riverside’s help documentation says each time a recording is stopped and restarted, a new recording is created. If you need one continuous episode file, avoid unnecessary stop-starts or plan to combine the resulting segments during editing.
Record, verify, and edit the tracks
- Tell everyone recording is starting. Obtain the guest’s consent before you begin. Recording requirements differ by jurisdiction, so check the rules that apply to everyone involved rather than assuming one general rule covers every location.
- Keep the conversation connected. In a dedicated platform, the call lets participants talk while their devices capture their tracks. In a double-ender, keep the call open while each person records locally.
- Use a sync marker for a double-ender. Start both local recordings, then clap once or count down together. The visible or audible transient gives you a clear point for aligning the files in editing software.
- Check that files exist and are complete. Before closing a platform session, verify that participant tracks are uploading or available. For a double-ender, make sure each participant has saved and shared their recording.
- Download or export the tracks. Keep a copy of the separate files in your editing workflow. Riverside documents editing in its web editor as well as downloading participant tracks for external software; verify its current workflow in the product’s help pages.
- Edit each voice separately. Separate tracks let you adjust a speaker’s level or edit an interruption without applying the same change to everyone. Align double-ender files using the sync marker before editing.
Troubleshooting common problems
The guest sounds distant or echoey
Check that the guest selected the intended microphone rather than the laptop mic, and ask them to use headphones. Move away from noisy or echoing spaces and make another short test.

The call drops or the connection is unstable
Close unnecessary apps and, if practical, try a wired connection. A dedicated platform’s local recordings can preserve participant tracks while the conversation is connected, but file uploads still need to complete. Check the platform for upload status before ending the session.
A participant track is missing
Confirm the recording mode and verify that the participant’s file was captured and uploaded. For a double-ender, ask whether the local recorder was running and the file was saved. If the session was stopped and restarted on Riverside, check for a separate recording segment rather than assuming all audio is in one file.
The two local recordings do not line up
Align the clap or countdown marker at the start. If no marker was recorded, find a distinct shared sound or spoken moment in both files and use it as a reference, then listen through the result to check synchronization.

The guest cannot manage the setup
Reduce the number of steps: use a familiar conferencing tool or, if appropriate, a phone call. Explain the compromise in advance—particularly that a call or phone recording may offer less fidelity or fewer separate tracks than a local-recording workflow.

- Ethernet cable: optional, but it may improve call stability where Wi-Fi is unreliable.
- Portable recorder: one option for a double-ender, not a requirement for platform-based recording or every guest.
Do not treat a mixer, interface, specific microphone model, or accessory as mandatory for every remote podcast. The gear depends on how each person records and how much control you need over the files.
