Choose a cloud server for 24/7 YouTube streaming by matching its transfer allowance and compute resources to what it must do: relay an already encoded feed, or render and encode video. A continuous 6 Mbps feed uses about 1.94 TB of video transfer in a 30-day month before overhead; encoding needs workload-specific testing because YouTube’s bitrate guidance does not specify a universal server size.
First decide what the server must do
The most important distinction is whether the server only forwards an encoded stream or also creates it. A relay handling a pre-encoded feed has different compute demands from a server running OBS scenes, compositing sources, or re-encoding video. The stream’s bitrate helps estimate network transfer; it does not tell you how many vCPUs an encoder needs.
Relay an existing feed
If another system has already encoded the video, determine how the server will receive and forward it, and whether it must download source files or run additional services. Evaluate sustained network performance and transfer billing, but do not buy a large CPU allocation on the assumption that YouTube’s bitrate table defines one.
Render or encode on the server
For a server that renders scenes or encodes video, test the actual content at the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. A static image, a moving documentary playlist, and a composited scene are different workloads. A plan’s listed vCPU count or bitrate target alone does not establish that it can encode continuously without dropped frames.

Set the YouTube output profile before choosing a plan
YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. Its H.264 table specifies 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, and YouTube supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. Check the current table when configuring a stream, since these settings can change.
- Choose resolution and frame rate based on the source and the viewing experience you want; upscaling a lower-resolution source does not add detail.
- Use the bitrate listed for the chosen codec and output profile, then test scenes with representative motion and audio. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
- Use RTMPS by default. YouTube describes it as a secure extension to RTMP.
- Consider HLS only when the workflow requires a supported case such as HDR or a codec not supported over RTMP. HLS has higher latency and requires compliant segments, a rolling playlist, and HTTPS behavior; see YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements.

monthly GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 3,600 × 24 × 30 ÷ 8,000
| Feed bitrate | Approximate video transfer in 30 days | Before |
|---|---|---|
| 6 Mbps | 1,944 GB (about 1.94 TB) | Protocol overhead and any other server traffic |
| 10 Mbps | 3,240 GB (about 3.24 TB) | Protocol overhead and any other server traffic |
These are calculations from the stated bitrate and month length, not provider measurements. Add a margin for protocol overhead, source downloads, system updates, monitoring, and other traffic. Then compare your estimate with the provider’s definition of billable transfer: providers may count inbound and outbound data differently, and some allowances pool across resources or accounts.

Compare cloud server plans by the terms that affect a 24/7 stream
Compare plans for the specific region where you will run the encoder or relay. Look beyond the headline price: check transfer allowance and excess-transfer charges, whether CPU resources are shared or dedicated, location, recurring IP or storage charges, and how restarts and monitoring work. These provider examples illustrate plan dimensions rather than a universal winner; confirm current terms before buying.
| Provider | What to check | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon Lightsail | Virtual-server bundle resources, included transfer, and excess outbound-transfer charges | Its pricing page says both inbound and outbound transfer count toward the allowance; excess outbound transfer is chargeable. Displayed Linux/Unix general-purpose examples ranged from $5/month with 1 TB transfer to $24/month with 4 TB at the time of the cited pricing information. Prices, region, and terms can change; verify them directly. |
| DigitalOcean Droplets | Plan-specific outbound allowance and additional transfer billing | DigitalOcean documents free included outbound transfer that depends on the applicable plan, with additional outbound transfer billed at $0.01 per GiB; inbound transfer is free and allowances pool at team level. Check the billing documentation and plan details for your account. |
| Hetzner Cloud | Shared-resource versus dedicated-resource class, regional traffic allowance, and service terms | Included traffic varies by product and location. The Cloud Server SLA states a 99.9% monthly availability objective subject to its measurement definitions and exclusions; it is not a promise that an individual broadcast cannot drop. |
Plan for failure, not just server capacity
A continuous stream depends on more than the cloud provider’s availability terms: the source, encoder or relay process, network path, and recovery setup can all fail. Hetzner’s stated 99.9% monthly availability objective is conditional on its SLA definitions and exclusions, and it does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. YouTube provides stream status and health fields for monitoring.

- Monitor the host process and YouTube stream health, not just whether the virtual machine responds.
- Decide how the encoder or relay should restart after a process crash or reboot, and test that recovery behavior.
- Test the full path—from source to server to YouTube ingest—before relying on it for a continuous channel. A healthy server does not prove the ingest connection is healthy.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a credential, restrict access, and replace it if exposed.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes a 24/7 feed as a scenario where a channel may also create a separate broadcast, such as an interview, during that feed. Plan how any separate broadcast fits into your channel’s stream and broadcast setup.

Technical continuity does not grant permission to stream the material. Before scheduling a documentary, soundtrack, archive clip, or other third-party material, make sure you have the rights needed for live streaming on YouTube. Review YouTube’s rules and your licensing terms for the territory and use involved. Repeated or near-identical programming may also raise monetization or reused-content questions; a stream’s technical setup does not determine whether content qualifies under YouTube’s policies.

A practical selection sequence
- Describe the workload. Record whether the source is a static image, playlist, composited scene, or live source, and whether the server relays, renders, or encodes it.
- Choose the output profile. Use YouTube’s current encoder table to set codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval.
- Calculate transfer. Estimate 30-day usage with the formula above, then add margin for overhead and other traffic.
- Compare regional terms. Check allowance, overage, resource class, location, relevant IP or storage costs, and the full recurring cost.
- Benchmark if encoding. Run the actual content and settings long enough to reveal sustained performance issues before committing to a longer plan.
- Configure and test recovery. Use RTMPS unless a supported requirement points to HLS; protect the key, monitor stream health, and verify restart behavior through a failure or reboot test.
Or let it run in the cloud
