You can make Windows reopen OBS after you sign in by placing an OBS shortcut in the Startup folder or creating a Task Scheduler task. That only restarts the application: it does not prove that your playlist resumes at the right video or position, or that a YouTube stream reconnects. Save your OBS setup, then test the whole recovery sequence on the computer you plan to rely on.
What restarting OBS does—and does not—guarantee
Windows startup settings can launch OBS after sign-in, and Task Scheduler can add control over when it launches. OBS community discussions describe these approaches, but they do not establish that a particular video playlist will resume from its previous item or position after a Windows update, reboot, or power failure. A 2019 report involving OBS Studio 23.2.1 on Windows 10 Pro described a media source playing at startup; its proposed blank-first-scene workaround is anecdotal and does not confirm current playlist behavior.
Treat recovery as four separate checks: OBS opens, the intended scene is active, the playlist source is present and actually playing, and the stream is connected if you are broadcasting. The installed OBS version and your own scene and playlist determine whether the latter steps work.
Prepare OBS before changing Windows startup
- Open OBS and save the current scene collection. Check that the scene containing your playlist is included and that the playlist source is configured as you expect.
- Note which scene should be active after restart. Do not assume the playlist’s current item or playback position will be preserved.
- If you stream, record how you will verify the stream’s status after OBS opens. A launched application is not proof that YouTube is receiving a live stream.

These are practical differences between the two community-described approaches, not measured performance comparisons. Choose the Startup folder for simplicity; use Task Scheduler when timing or recovery retries matter.

Option 1: Add an OBS shortcut to the Startup folder
- Find the OBS shortcut you normally use, or create a shortcut to the OBS executable.
- Open the Windows Startup folder for your user account. One way is to press Windows+R, enter
shell:startup, and press Enter. - Place or copy the OBS shortcut into that folder.
- Sign out and back in, or restart the PC, then check whether OBS opens. Continue with the full recovery test below; opening OBS alone is not enough.
OBS community guidance describes using a shortcut in the Windows Startup folder to launch the application after sign-in. This method does not provide the same trigger and timing controls as a scheduled task.
Option 2: Create a Task Scheduler task
- Open Windows Task Scheduler and create a task that runs OBS at the sign-in or startup trigger appropriate to your setup.
- Set the task’s action to start the OBS executable. A community example for scheduled recording specifies
--startrecording --minimize-to-trayas arguments and the executable’s directory as “Start in.” Those arguments are for recording; they are not evidence that a playlist resumes or that a YouTube stream starts. - If the PC may start before your router or other network equipment is ready, configure a delay where appropriate, or use a script that retries after connectivity is available. An OBS community discussion in 2024 noted that an initial connection attempt can occur before network equipment is ready; this timing issue may apply to streaming setups.
- Save the task and run a controlled test. Confirm OBS opens under the conditions the task is intended to handle.
Another OBS forum response mentions a command-line argument for starting a stream and points to OBS launch parameters, while cautioning that OBS is not designed for unattended, noninteractive streaming. Do not treat a launch argument as a guarantee of unattended recovery: verify the exact behavior with your installed OBS version and configuration.

Test recovery after a restart or update
- Save your work and use a controlled restart. Test after an ordinary reboot first; if you need to rely on recovery after Windows updates or power loss, test those conditions separately when practical.
- Wait for Windows to sign in and allow the configured startup action or scheduled task to run.
- Confirm OBS has opened and the intended scene is active.
- Check that the playlist source exists and that video playback actually begins. Verify the expected item and position rather than assuming the previous playback state was restored.
- If you broadcast, check OBS’s connection status and confirm that the YouTube stream is live. If the first attempt fails while network equipment is still starting, try a delayed launch or a retry mechanism, then test again.
Do not rely on unattended recovery until this complete sequence works on the actual machine. The available community discussions describe application startup methods, not a verified guarantee of playlist restoration across current OBS versions or Windows update restarts.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
- OBS does not open after sign-in: Check that the shortcut is in the Startup folder for the account that signs in, or review the Task Scheduler trigger and action. Test by signing in again or manually running the task.
- OBS opens, but the wrong scene is active: Reopen the saved scene collection and check which scene is selected. Repeat the restart test after saving the intended setup.
- The playlist source is present, but playback does not begin: The available evidence does not establish that playlist state or position persists through a restart. Check the source in OBS after launch and verify playback manually; test any configuration change rather than assuming it fixes startup behavior.
- OBS opens before the network is ready, or the stream fails to connect: Try a delayed task launch or a script that retries after connectivity is available. Confirm both the OBS connection and YouTube stream status after the network is up.
- A stream-start command does not produce reliable unattended recovery: OBS community guidance cautions that the application is not designed for unattended noninteractive streaming. Test the command and the full restart path on your own system; do not assume it guarantees a reconnect.
