Where is Scott Peterson now?
Peterson remains imprisoned in California under a sentence of life without the possibility of parole. The latest dated source here, a statement issued by the Los Angeles Innocence Project on April 28, 2026, describes him as serving that sentence but does not name a facility. Netflix’s Tudum page says he is at California State Prison, Corcoran; the Associated Press reported that he appeared remotely from Mule Creek State Prison in March 2024. Those accounts do not establish his current prison location, so Corcoran should not be treated as independently verified current custody information.
What is his conviction and sentence?
A jury convicted Peterson in 2004 of first-degree murder for the death of his wife, Laci Peterson, and second-degree murder for the death of their unborn son. The California Supreme Court later reversed his death sentence because of errors in jury selection, but left the murder convictions intact. What is the latest reported legal development?
In its April 28, 2026 statement, the Los Angeles Innocence Project said a superior court had declined to review new evidence raised in a habeas petition the organization filed in August 2025. The organization said it planned to appeal. This is the group’s account of the ruling and its own intended next step; it is not a finding that Peterson is innocent, and the sources available here do not establish the appeal’s status after that statement. The convictions have not been reported as overturned in these sources.

The dispute follows earlier requests for additional testing and access to evidence. In March 2024, the Associated Press reported that the Los Angeles Innocence Project sought further DNA testing and access to materials connected to a burglary across the street from the Peterson home, among other evidence. AP described those as the organization’s requests and reported that prosecutors regarded much of the material as previously litigated. That 2024 reporting supplies background, not a decision on the later habeas petition.

American Murder: Laci Peterson is a three-part Netflix documentary directed by Skye Borgman. Netflix describes it as a revisit of Laci Peterson’s disappearance, the investigation, and the trial, using news clips, interrogation footage, and courtroom cameras. The series offers a documentary account of the case; it is not a court ruling, and its presentation does not change the status of the convictions or sentence.
