How to Block YouTube Access on iPad: 6 Methods

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a free block on a personal iPad, remove the YouTube app, prevent new app downloads or restrict permitted apps, and block YouTube addresses in Screen Time. These controls cover different routes: an app restriction does not block the website, and a website restriction does not necessarily stop the app. Choose the method below based on whether you want a permanent block, scheduled access, a temporary single-app session, or management across devices.

Choose the right kind of YouTube restriction

Method What it restricts Best for
Delete the app and restrict downloads The installed app and, with the right Screen Time setting, reinstalling it A quick first step
Screen Time web restrictions Listed YouTube addresses in browsers that honor Apple’s web-content controls Blocking Safari and other browser access
App Limits Daily time in selected apps or categories Allowing a set amount of use
Downtime App use during chosen hours, subject to allowed-app settings Homework, bedtime, or other schedules
Guided Access Leaving the one app selected for the current session Temporary supervised use
Parental-control service, network filtering, or MDM Coverage depends on the service, network, and device-management setup Multiple devices or institution-managed iPads

These methods are not equally strong. For most families using one personal iPad, start with Screen Time. For an organization that needs restrictions users cannot remove, use supervised-device management rather than relying on a consumer setting alone.

1. Delete YouTube and prevent a new download

Removing the app stops access through that installed copy, but does not block YouTube in a browser. It also does not prevent reinstalling the app unless you restrict downloads or otherwise control permitted apps.

  1. Touch and hold the YouTube app, tap Remove App, then Delete App and confirm.
  2. Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions and turn restrictions on.
  3. Open the App Store, media, and purchase controls and restrict app installations or downloads. The exact control label can vary by iPadOS version.
  4. If you use app age ratings instead, choose a rating that excludes YouTube. This can also block other apps, so check the effect before relying on it.
  5. Set a Screen Time passcode the iPad user does not know.

Apple documents Screen Time controls for apps, downloads, purchases, and content ratings in its iPad guide to blocking apps, app downloads, websites, and purchases. To restore access later, reverse the relevant restriction and reinstall the app from the App Store; a child’s download may require parental approval.

2. Block YouTube websites with Screen Time

Use this method to restrict listed addresses in Safari and other browsers that honor Apple’s web-content restrictions. A web block is separate from an app block.

  1. Open Settings > Screen Time. If managing a child through Family Sharing, select the child.
  2. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions and turn it on.
  3. Tap App Store, Media, Web, & Games > Web Content.
  4. Select Limit Adult Websites.
  5. Under Never Allow, tap Add Website and add the addresses you want to block, such as youtube.com, www.youtube.com, m.youtube.com, and youtu.be.
  6. Test the addresses in the browsers available on that iPad. Add other YouTube or redirect domains if you observe them being used.

Apple describes adding specific addresses to the Never Allow list in its Screen Time web-content instructions. Blocking a few addresses may not catch every alternate route, and the YouTube app can still work unless it is separately restricted.

Use an approved-sites list for a broader web block

If the aim is to limit access to a defined set of sites—not just YouTube—choose Only Approved Websites under Web Content, then add the sites the user may visit. This is more restrictive than blocking a few URLs: unlisted school, support, or other useful sites may not load. Apple includes this mode in its parental-controls overview.

3. Set a daily App Limit

App Limits allow a chosen amount of time; they are not a permanent prohibition. They also do not cover YouTube in a browser unless you restrict that route separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Screen Time. Turn on App & Website Activity if prompted.
  2. Tap App Limits > Add Limit.
  3. Select YouTube, or its category if it appears there, then tap Next.
  4. Set a daily allowance, such as 15 or 30 minutes, and use Customize Days if you want different limits on different days.
  5. Protect Screen Time with a passcode controlled by the parent or organizer.

Apple supports limits for apps and categories, along with Downtime, in its Screen Time guide. A user may be able to request more time; a parent managing the child through Family Sharing can respond to requests. If Share Across Devices is enabled, Screen Time activity and settings can apply across the signed-in Apple devices, rather than only this iPad.

4. Schedule restrictions with Downtime

Downtime can restrict apps during chosen hours, which is useful for bedtime or homework. It applies more broadly than a YouTube-only block, so review the apps that remain available.

  1. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Downtime.
  2. Turn on Scheduled and choose the start and end times and applicable days.
  3. Open Always Allowed and keep essential apps available; make sure YouTube is not included.
  4. Set a Screen Time passcode controlled by the parent.

For a scheduled YouTube restriction that covers both routes, combine Downtime with a separate web restriction and an app restriction or App Limit. Test essential communication and emergency-related access during the schedule before depending on it. Apple explains Downtime and child Screen Time controls in its guide to managing a child’s device with Screen Time.

5. Use Guided Access for a temporary single-app session

Guided Access keeps the iPad in one chosen app while a session is active. It is useful when a caregiver or teacher wants the device to stay in a reading, learning, or presentation app; it does not block YouTube across the iPad outside that session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access and turn it on.
  2. Set a Guided Access passcode or enable Face ID or Touch ID where available.
  3. Open the app the user should stay in.
  4. Triple-click the top button or Home button, depending on the iPad model.
  5. Set any session options, then tap Start.

Start a session whenever needed and confirm that the user cannot exit it using the configured controls. Guided Access is a session-based accessibility feature, not a replacement for Screen Time or device management.

6. Choose a control for multiple devices or stronger enforcement

Parental-control services

Commercial services may combine schedules, website or app controls, reports, and parent dashboards. Their iPad capabilities depend on Apple’s platform restrictions and the permissions or profiles a service requires; compare the setup and data practices as well as the feature list.

  • Bark: Bark describes an iOS setup involving the Bark Kids app and notes that Apple’s privacy restrictions affect what it can do. See Bark’s iOS app information. Its pricing page is Bark pricing; check current billing terms there.
  • Qustodio: Its vendor site describes parental controls, while the U.S. App Store listing gives iPad compatibility and current listing details. Some controls may require a child-side app, permissions, or a management profile. App Store prices vary by region and can change.
  • Mobicip: Review its pricing page for current plans and trial terms.
  • OurPact: Review its pricing and cross-platform control details. Check the current iPadOS compatibility and requirements before relying on advertised tamper protection.

A paid service is most useful when its reporting, schedules, or multi-device controls solve a need that Screen Time does not. It is unnecessary for many single-iPad blocks, and no vendor claim should be treated as proof that a child cannot bypass a configuration.

DNS or router filtering

A DNS service or router rule can apply to devices using that network. It may not follow an iPad to cellular data or another Wi-Fi network, and a VPN, encrypted traffic, alternate domains, cached content, or a device DNS change may affect results. Treat it as a network-layer control, not a guaranteed app-wide block. Examples include NextDNS, AdGuard DNS, and router parental controls.

Supervised iPad and MDM

Schools and organizations that need centrally enforced restrictions should consider supervised devices enrolled in mobile device management (MDM). Depending on configuration, administrators can deploy app, web, DNS, proxy, and content-filtering policies. This is an organizational setup, not a quick setting for a personally owned iPad. Apple describes the options in its deployment guide to content filtering and explains supervision and management in its Apple platform security information.

Set up parent-controlled Screen Time

A restriction is only as durable as the person’s ability to change it. For a child’s iPad, use Family Sharing when available so a parent or organizer can manage Screen Time from their own Apple device. Apple’s Screen Time guidance for a child’s device covers family management and passcodes.

  • Use a Screen Time passcode different from the iPad unlock code, and do not share it with the child.
  • Check which Apple Account is signed in and whether Share Across Devices is enabled; that setting may extend Screen Time behavior beyond the iPad.
  • Keep relevant devices up to date and confirm changes have synced.
  • Do not rely on a restriction as tamper-proof on a personally owned, unsupervised iPad.

Apple’s parental-controls guide covers Family Sharing controls and responding to a child’s requests for more time.

Troubleshoot when YouTube is still reachable

  • The app still plays videos: The web restriction does not necessarily affect the installed app. Delete or restrict YouTube separately.
  • YouTube opens in Chrome or another browser: Confirm the web-content restriction is active and test the address in each installed browser. Consider an approved-sites list if individual address rules are not enough.
  • YouTube was reinstalled: Deleting the app alone does not prevent a new download. Restrict app installations or permitted app ratings.
  • The child requests more time: App Limits and Downtime may offer an exception request. Review it from the parent-managed Screen Time controls rather than sharing the passcode.
  • YouTube works on cellular data or another Wi-Fi network: A home router or DNS rule applies to its configured network, not necessarily to other connections. Use device-level restrictions for broader coverage.
  • A VPN appears to bypass DNS filtering: DNS filtering alone is not a reliable VPN-resistant device lock. Consider a managed configuration if that level of enforcement is required.
  • Screen Time settings do not appear on the parent’s device: Confirm the intended Family Sharing group and Apple Accounts, update relevant devices, and check whether cross-device sharing is configured as intended.
  • The Screen Time passcode is forgotten: Use Apple’s supported Screen Time passcode recovery process; do not remove other restrictions blindly.
  • Videos appear inside another app: Embedded players and in-app browsers can create routes beyond the YouTube app. Broader web restrictions or a supervised filtering policy may be needed.

Can you block YouTube but allow Safari?

Yes. Keep Safari available and use Screen Time’s Web Content restrictions to block YouTube addresses. For broader control, use Only Approved Websites, but check that the sites the iPad user needs are included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can you allow YouTube Kids or block only Shorts?

Do not assume that blocking standard YouTube will leave YouTube Kids unaffected: the app and its web behavior should be tested separately on the specific iPad. The controls described here are for restricting apps, categories, websites, or time; the documented Screen Time paths do not establish a separate Shorts-only switch. A broad app or domain block may affect more than one YouTube feature.
