Ask the relevant rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist before you go live. These steps lower risk, but no music source or clearance route can guarantee that YouTube will never issue a claim.
Why a YouTube radio livestream can be interrupted
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may warn you, replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it temporarily, or terminate it if the content remains. A license alone does not ensure the live stream will continue: YouTube advises creators who have licensed third-party content to ask its owner to add the channel to the Content ID allowlist. You are responsible for having the necessary rights for the content in your stream and for meeting applicable requirements in the territories where it is streamed. The rights needed depend on the music, how it is used, the license, and relevant jurisdictions; one generic license should not be assumed to clear every composition, recording, territory, or archived use. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and get advice specific to your station and territory when needed.
Clear every track before going live
Build a track-by-track rights record
For each song, record the composition and sound recording, the rights holder or licensor, and the document that grants permission. Confirm that its terms cover all of the following:

- YouTube livestream use, not only personal listening or on-demand video.
- The territories where the stream will be available.
- Monetization, if you plan to earn revenue from the stream.
- Archived livestreams, replays, or other recordings you intend to keep public.
- The license term, renewal or cancellation conditions, attribution, reporting duties, and any other restrictions.
A purchase or subscription does not automatically grant every online broadcast right. Keep the license and correspondence accessible while the stream is running.
Arrange Content ID allowlisting
Before the broadcast, contact the rights holder or licensor and ask them to add your YouTube channel to their Content ID allowlist. Provide the correct channel identifier and ask for written confirmation. A licensed track can still trigger a live interruption if the channel is not allowlisted or YouTube does not recognize the permission in time; allowlisting reduces that risk but is not a guarantee.

Review the whole audio chain
Check more than the playlist. Background music, station IDs, ads, guest audio, and other third-party material also need appropriate clearance. Test the complete planned audio chain privately where feasible, but treat a clean test as a check of your setup—not proof that YouTube will clear the content or that a later live broadcast cannot be flagged.
Include archive and replay rights
If you keep the stream recording, make sure the permission covers that use too. YouTube says archived live streams can receive Content ID claims after the broadcast has ended. Live permission and replay permission are not necessarily the same.

Choose music by its actual license, not its label
Direct permission or a music license
Get written terms for the specific live broadcast and any archive, territories, monetization, and duration. Check which rights are granted and whether conditions such as attribution, track logs, or channel allowlisting apply. YouTube’s live-stream guidance explains why a license may not prevent an automated interruption by itself.
Royalty-free and production-library music
“Royalty-free” does not by itself establish that a track is cleared for a YouTube livestream, archive, or monetized broadcast. Read the actual license and check the provider’s Content ID and allowlisting process. Terms vary by provider; do not assume all libraries handle claims or live use the same way.

YouTube Audio Library and Creator Music
YouTube identifies its Audio Library and Creator Music among possible ways to source music, but says these options do not guarantee that claims or strikes will never occur. Creator Music availability and track terms are limited and vary. YouTube’s cited guidance describes availability for U.S. creators in the YouTube Partner Program, with expansion outside the U.S. pending; verify the current availability in your account and the terms for the exact track. Its revenue-sharing rules say the covered video cannot be a livestream or a Short, so do not treat a Creator Music revenue-sharing track as clearance for a radio livestream. Creative Commons, public domain, and copyright exceptions
These may be valid routes in some circumstances, but verify ownership, the precise license, attribution requirements, the recording rights, the jurisdiction, and whether the use is covered. Copyright exceptions differ across jurisdictions; U.S. fair use is not a universal rule. Even a plausible legal basis does not guarantee that YouTube’s systems will avoid a claim.

What to do if YouTube flags the live stream
- Stop or replace the flagged track. If YouTube warns you or substitutes a placeholder, remove or replace the suspected material while you investigate. Do not assume that a license will be recognized automatically before the stream is interrupted or terminated.
- Check YouTube Studio. Review the notice and identify the content and claimant if details are available.
- Verify your documentation. Check that the track, recording, territory, livestream use, monetization, and any archive are actually covered by the permission.
- Contact the rights holder. If the use is authorized, ask whether the channel has been allowlisted and provide the correct channel identifier and license details.
- Keep a record of the resolution. Save the notice, correspondence, permission, and any confirmation of allowlisting for future broadcasts.
How to handle a claim on an archived stream
In YouTube Studio, review the claim details, including the claimant, claimed segment, and policy. A Content ID claim may monetize, track, or block the video, and policies can vary by geography. If the claim is valid, you may be able to leave it in place or remove, replace, or mute the claimed material where those options are available.
Dispute only when you have a sound basis, such as documented rights that cover the use, a relevant copyright exception, or a clear misidentification. Credit, owning a copy of a song, or choosing not to monetize are not by themselves grounds to dispute. YouTube says it does not mediate ownership disputes. A claim is not the same as a copyright strike
A Content ID claim can affect a video’s monetization, tracking, or availability. A copyright strike can follow a valid copyright removal request; it is a separate and more serious process. Strikes involving active or archived livestreams may disable live-stream access, and YouTube says a channel with three strikes is subject to termination. See YouTube’s account-standing guidance.
Common assumptions that do not clear a track
- “I gave credit.” Attribution alone does not grant broadcast rights or make a claim invalid.
- “I bought the song.” Owning a copy is not the same as having livestream or broadcast permission.
- “I am not monetizing.” Not earning revenue does not itself grant permission.
- “It is royalty-free, so Content ID cannot claim it.” The label alone says nothing conclusive about live use or automated matching.
- “A claim means I have a strike.” Claims and strikes are distinct processes with different consequences.
- “YouTube will decide who owns the music.” YouTube says it does not decide copyright ownership or mediate ownership disputes.
