To keep a YouTube gaming stream live overnight, send a prerecorded video or playlist through a streaming encoder connected to YouTube Live. The encoder must stay running, with a steady internet connection, for the broadcast to continue. In YouTube Studio, create an encoder stream, copy its stream URL and key into your encoder, test the loop and preview, then start the stream. If you need a complete YouTube replay, plan for a separate recording: YouTube says streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured in full.
What you need for an overnight prerecorded stream
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. YouTube’s current guidance also sets a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. See YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips.
- A prerecorded gaming video or playlist you have the rights to stream.
- An encoder that can send the video to YouTube Live. YouTube describes encoders as a way to stream gameplay and overlays; a software encoder on a computer is enough to get started.
- A computer and network connection that can remain on and stable for the whole broadcast, unless you use a cloud service.
- A plan for monitoring and recording the stream, particularly if the YouTube archive matters.
A video file does not become a live broadcast merely because it is uploaded to YouTube. The encoder sends it as a live feed using the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio.
Set up the stream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream. Choose the encoder workflow. Set the title, description, privacy and other stream details accurately. Select Gaming when the actual content is gaming; the category does not grant rights to the footage or make a prerecorded loop eligible for monetization.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. In the stream setup details in YouTube Live Control Room, copy both into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before using it again.
- Configure the video source and repetition in the encoder. Add the prerecorded file or playlist as the encoder’s media source and configure it to repeat. The exact controls vary by encoder; YouTube’s connection guide does not prescribe a universal looping procedure. Test that the video reaches its end and starts again cleanly before relying on it unattended.
- Start the encoder and wait for YouTube’s incoming preview. Confirm that the picture and sound appear in Live Control Room before starting the broadcast. YouTube’s guide to creating an encoder stream explains the connection and preview workflow: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Start the live broadcast and check the watch page. Verify that viewers can access it with the intended privacy setting. Check the audio, video and stream status on another device if possible before leaving it running.
Make the overnight loop dependable
Test the whole playback cycle
Do not test only the first few minutes. Let the complete file or playlist finish and confirm that playback resumes as intended. Check for a black gap, abrupt audio change, or encoder stopping at the end. If your encoder has a recovery or restart option, test its behavior rather than assuming it will resume correctly.
Keep the computer and connection available
For a local software encoder, prevent the computer from sleeping or restarting during the broadcast, keep the encoder open, and use a reliable network connection. A power interruption, internet outage, software crash or computer sleep can stop the feed. YouTube’s setup guidance recommends testing the equipment and monitoring the stream; it does not establish that a local encoder will recover automatically from a failure.

Monitor the stream and any local recording
Before leaving the setup unattended, confirm that the live preview is moving, audio is audible, the watch page is accessible, and any local recording is actively growing. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend previewing and monitoring the broadcast, checking access from channel or watch pages and mobile, and verifying the local archive. See YouTube streaming tips.

Protect the replay and understand the 12-hour limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is a warning, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will produce a complete replay. If preserving the video matters, record it locally as a backup and consider ending and restarting the broadcast before it reaches 12 hours. Check copyright, game rights, and monetization before going live
Prerecorded does not mean cleared
You are responsible for having the necessary rights for both live and archived material, including music. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions require compliance with its Community Guidelines and rights obligations. Its systems scan live streams for third-party content; a match can lead to a placeholder, interruption or termination. Even if you have a licence, a rights holder may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID to prevent an interruption. Details: Copyright issues with live streams.

Game footage and monetization are separate questions
Whether gameplay can be monetized may depend on the publisher’s commercial-use terms. YouTube says gameplay may be monetizable when it includes step-by-step commentary directly tied to the action and providing instructional or educational value; extended gameplay without that context may not be accepted. An unattended replay loop is therefore an uncertain monetization proposition, even if you own the recording. Review YouTube’s guidance on video game and software content.
Repeated streams can matter to channel monetization
YouTube’s channel monetization rules apply to live streams as well as other formats. Its July 15, 2025 policy note says the former “repetitious content” label was renamed “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced material is ineligible; reused content is a separate policy. Troubleshoot common overnight failures
