You can automate the playlist file that FFmpeg reads, but do not assume a running FFmpeg process will notice edits to that file. The reliable pattern is to generate the next playlist safely, then deliberately reload it—usually by restarting FFmpeg at a tested boundary—and confirm YouTube stays live through the change. The steps below cover playlist creation, YouTube ingest, unattended operation, and the limits of YouTube’s long-stream archives.
How the update workflow works
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads an ordered text file of media paths. A separate scheduler or file watcher can create that file whenever new podcast episodes are ready. Those are two distinct jobs: updating the file does not establish that an already-running concat input reloads it. The FFmpeg documentation describes reading concat scripts but does not promise live reload, so test the exact FFmpeg version and deployment before relying on one.
- Maintain an eligible media library. Select episodes and sort them in the intended playback order.
- Write a new concat script. Write to a temporary file, then replace the active playlist atomically where the operating system permits. This prevents FFmpeg from encountering a partly written list.
- Make the active encoder consume the new list. Test a controlled restart—ideally at an episode boundary—and verify whether YouTube’s live session continues or is interrupted. Do not count on editing the file alone.
- Supervise the encoder. Capture logs, monitor for a stopped process or encoder errors, and configure restart and alert behavior appropriate to the host.
- Test failure and recovery cases. Exercise a playlist update, FFmpeg crash and restart, network interruption, and YouTube session end before leaving the stream unattended.
Compare refresh methods against the things that matter operationally: whether the new episode begins cleanly, whether restarting interrupts the YouTube session, how complex the setup is, and what happens after a failure. No single refresh approach is established as reliable for every FFmpeg build and stream configuration.

Use paths that exist on the machine running FFmpeg. Prefer safe relative paths when practical. The example command below uses -safe 0, which permits paths outside the concat demuxer’s safe-path rules; omit it if your paths meet those rules. Keep the YouTube stream key out of the public playlist, shell history, logs, and shared examples.
Loop the playlist and send it to YouTube
This is a command pattern, not a tested command for every media library or FFmpeg build. Replace the paths and credentials locally, and check the installed FFmpeg release’s options:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i /path/to/playlist.ffconcat
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
-re reads at the input’s native rate, while -stream_loop -1 requests indefinite looping. The output options shown encode video as H.264 and audio as AAC in an FLV output; verify the output container, protocol, codecs, and ingest URL against the current YouTube stream configuration. Store credentials in a protected environment or secret store appropriate to your host rather than placing them in a published script.
Make episode boundaries compatible
The concat demuxer expects inputs to have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. FFmpeg adjusts timestamps across files, but inaccurate duration metadata can cause artifacts or gaps. If episodes differ in stream layout or codecs, normalize or re-encode them to a consistent format before adding them. Test transitions between representative episodes for audio discontinuity, video glitches, and timestamp problems.

Automate updates without corrupting the active playlist
Generate and replace the file
Have a scheduled job or file watcher build the list from the episodes that are ready to publish. Write the complete new script to a temporary file in the same filesystem, validate it, then replace the prior script atomically where supported. This avoids exposing a partially generated playlist to a process that may read it during the write.
Set the ordering rule explicitly—for example, oldest-to-newest for a podcast queue or a fixed rotation. Decide how removed or unavailable episodes are handled, and reject missing paths before installing a playlist. These are library-management decisions; the concat demuxer does not provide them by itself.

Reload through a tested process
Because a running concat input is not documented as reloading a changed script, test one deliberate mechanism: restart FFmpeg at a clip boundary, or use a supervisor to launch a replacement process. Verify the effect on the YouTube live session, reconnect behavior, and viewer experience before making the process unattended. Avoid promising uninterrupted output until your particular restart and ingest setup has passed that test.
Monitor the complete chain
- Keep FFmpeg logs and alert on process exit, repeated encoder errors, or loss of output.
- Check YouTube stream health and confirm the expected video and audio are reaching Live Control Room.
- After updates, confirm the next episode appears in the actual playback sequence.
- Test network loss and process recovery rather than assuming a process manager alone guarantees continuity.
- Verify that a local recording is growing if you use one as an archive backup.
Configure YouTube Live ingest
- In YouTube Studio, create or configure a stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the provided stream URL and stream key into the encoder configuration. Treat the key like a password.
- Prefer RTMPS as recommended by YouTube’s encoder guidance. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio, and recommends constant bitrate encoding.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval as YouTube recommends; the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Choose bitrate for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate using YouTube’s current ingest recommendations, and check that your upload connection can sustain it. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate.
- Run a test stream with representative episodes, including typical speech, music, and movement. Check stream health, audio levels, and local recording before depending on the setup.
Bitrate recommendations vary with ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no one bitrate from this workflow that should be copied blindly. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and stream management guidance before changing a production stream.

Plan for 24/7 streams, archives, and rewind
A continuous live broadcast is not a dependable substitute for a local podcast archive. YouTube says that if a live stream is less than 12 hours, it can automatically archive it; if it exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. If you need YouTube archives, plan how to divide or restart live sessions and test the effect on continuity rather than expecting one uninterrupted 24/7 session to produce a complete archive.
Very long broadcasts can also have limited DVR capabilities: YouTube says viewers may only be able to rewind up to a limit, and DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Tell listeners how to find individual podcast episodes if pause-and-rewind access is important to them.
Common problems and fixes
- The new episode does not appear: the active process may still be using its original concat input. Confirm the playlist file changed, then use the tested restart or reload procedure.
- FFmpeg reports path or safety errors: check that paths are valid on the encoder host. Prefer safe relative paths; use
-safe 0only when needed and understand that it permits paths outside the safe-path rules. - Audio or video glitches occur between episodes: inspect codecs, stream layouts, time bases, and duration metadata. Normalize incompatible media and test episode boundaries.
- The output fails at YouTube ingest: check the stream URL and key, selected protocol, codecs, container, encoder settings, and current YouTube ingest requirements. Keep the key private.
- The stream stops after a restart or network drop: examine FFmpeg and YouTube logs, then test the supervisor’s recovery behavior and YouTube session handling. A restart policy is not proof that viewers saw uninterrupted playback.
- No complete YouTube archive appears: a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Maintain a local recording plan and design session breaks if platform archives are needed.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep a local computer running an encoder, StreamNeo runs an uploaded-video YouTube stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs in the cloud.
- Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
Monthly pricing: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or plans and pricing. To start the free day, create a StreamNeo account.
