Assess the specific claim and the source separately. Find the earliest available version of the material, identify who gathered it and how, test its place and timing, and seek genuinely independent corroboration. A familiar outlet, official title, verification badge, watermark or dramatic firsthand account is not proof that one particular wartime claim is correct.
Use a calibrated conclusion—verified, supported but incomplete, unverified, contradicted or false—and state exactly what the evidence establishes and what remains unknown. This approach works for a news report, military statement, social-media post, photograph, video or eyewitness account.
Start with the claim, not the reputation
Reliability has two separate questions:
- Is this source generally dependable? Consider its authority, transparency, accuracy and correction record, motivation, access and relevance.
- Is this particular claim supported? Examine the evidence chain for this event, date, location and consequence.
A publication with a strong record can repeat a mistake supplied by a trusted intermediary. A local witness may have direct access but misunderstand what happened outside the camera frame. An official ministry may hold valuable records while also having an institutional stake in how an attack is described. Treat credibility as a factor to investigate, not a permanent certificate.
Write the claim in one sentence before searching. Separate the post’s interpretation from what the material visibly shows. For example, “A missile struck a hospital in City X on 18 October, killing 40 people” contains at least four propositions: the place, the date, the weapon or actor, and the casualty figure. A video might establish that an explosion occurred somewhere, yet establish none of the other three.

A seven-step verification workflow
1. Record the precise assertion
Copy the wording, account name, publication time, caption and any attached file. Note the claimed location, date, actors, weapon, casualties and source of the information. Preserve the original post or document if possible; edits and deletions can change the evidence trail.
Then list what is directly observable. In a clip, that might be smoke, a road sign and a building facade. “This proves an air strike by Country A” is an inference, not an observation. Keeping the two columns separate prevents a confident caption from silently becoming a fact.
2. Locate the earliest available source
Trace a repost to the first identifiable uploader, photographer, reporter, document or official release. Search distinctive phrases, crop out repost graphics and inspect watermarks as leads. A credit line can help you find an origin, but the credit itself does not authenticate the material.
Ask whether the original publisher identifies itself, explains its access and links to evidence. Reuters’ journalistic standards put the principle plainly: “Accuracy means proper attribution to the source of material that is not ours, whether in a story, a photograph or moving images.” Attribution lets readers judge how much weight to give a claim instead of treating borrowed material as the publisher’s own reporting.

3. Examine access, incentives and sourcing
Ask six questions of every source, including established media and official bodies:
- What access did it have to the event?
- Who collected the information, and what exactly did they observe?
- What evidence is provided—documents, geolocation, interviews, imagery or records?
- Who benefits politically, militarily or financially if the claim is accepted?
- Does the source distinguish observed facts from interpretation and allegation?
- How does it correct errors, and can you inspect its previous work?
Party status does not automatically make a statement false, and independence does not automatically make a report true. A combatant’s statement may be the only immediate account of a battlefield event, but it should be labeled as that party’s claim and checked against evidence. A journalist barred from the scene may still provide careful, transparent reporting based on multiple sources; the access limitation should remain visible.

4. Search for earlier appearances
For a photograph, run reverse-image searches on the full image and distinctive crops. For video, capture several clear frames or keyframes and search those images; many services do not search video files directly. Search unusual captions, visible signs, building names, language, uniforms and other unique details.
An earlier upload with a different date can disprove the claimed timing. Not finding an earlier copy does not prove that the material is new: private groups, deleted posts, poor indexing and language differences leave major gaps. Bellingcat’s conflict guidance summarizes the correct posture: “Treat all footage and claims with caution.”
5. Test place and chronology
Compare visible details with the alleged location: road layouts, minarets, bridges, skylines, terrain, storefronts, utility poles, signs, language and architectural damage. Check shadows, weather, vegetation, snow, smoke direction and the position of the sun against the claimed time. Look for landmarks in multiple frames rather than relying on one blurred object.
Geolocation can show that a clip was filmed in a particular region without showing that it depicts the alleged incident. Bellingcat has documented footage correctly located in Gaza but recorded on an earlier date. Location, date and event identity are separate questions; establish each one independently.
6. Corroborate through independent evidence
Look for a different camera angle, separate eyewitnesses, hospital or morgue records, satellite imagery, weather data, flight or shipping logs, public notices, court filings or reporting whose journalists obtained their own sources. Map the evidence chain behind each account. Three articles that all cite the same social-media post are one originating claim repeated three times, not three independent confirmations.
Independence is about production, not logo count. If outlets publish identical wording, the same unnamed official and the same image, investigate the common origin. A second report that reaches the same conclusion from records or a separate witness is materially stronger.

7. Publish a calibrated finding
Use a label that matches the evidence:
- Verified: the key elements are supported by strong, independently checked evidence.
- Supported but incomplete: important elements are well supported, while attribution, timing, scale or consequences remain unresolved.
- Unverified: the claim may be plausible, but available evidence cannot establish it.
- Contradicted: reliable evidence conflicts with one or more central elements.
- False: the central assertion is disproved, not merely unsupported.
Explain the boundary in plain language: “The video is consistent with the stated city, but its date and the identity of the aircraft cannot be established.” Do not turn absence of evidence into proof of absence.
How to evaluate a source on consistent criteria
Compare sources on the same dimensions instead of ranking them by prestige. The following framework adapts commonly used source-evaluation principles from UNESCO journalism education materials and the House of Commons Library’s guidance on evaluating sources.
| Dimension | Questions to ask | What a strong answer looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Access | Was the source at the scene, near relevant records or relying on a chain of intermediaries? | Access is described specifically, with limits acknowledged. |
| Transparency | Does it identify the author, witnesses, methods, date and material origin? | Readers can see who knows what and how they know it. |
| Evidence quality | Are there original files, documents, identifiable witnesses or analyzable images? | Evidence can be inspected and tested rather than asserted. |
| Independence | Was the information gathered separately from other reports? | The account has its own sourcing and does not simply repeat a single post. |
| Accuracy and corrections | Does the source correct mistakes visibly and preserve an accountable record? | Errors are acknowledged, amended and explained. |
| Motivation | Could the source gain military, political, financial or reputational advantage? | Potential interests are disclosed and claims are still evidence-led. |
| Relevance | Does the source actually address this event, place, date and question? | Evidence is specific to the claim rather than general background. |
Apply the table to official statements too. An army brief may reliably state what its command claims, but that is not the same as independently establishing what happened. Attribute it precisely—“the defence ministry said…”—and then test the statement against available records and imagery.
Verifying photographs and video
What the file can and cannot show
Inspect the highest-quality copy you can obtain. Note resolution, cuts, audio continuity, compression, embedded text and whether the material appears to be a screen recording. Metadata such as capture time, device and GPS can be useful, but social platforms often strip it and metadata can be edited. Treat it as supporting evidence, never as a verdict.
Analyze the sequence, not just the most dramatic frame. Look for duplicated people, abrupt changes in smoke, impossible shadows, mismatched weather, inconsistent damage, audio from another scene or a camera position that moves between cuts. These clues warrant further checking; they do not by themselves prove manipulation.
Reverse-search strategy
- Save several keyframes, including a wide view and close views of signs, buildings or vehicles.
- Search each frame with more than one reverse-image service and try cropped details.
- Search distinctive text in the caption and in any visible sign, using relevant languages and spelling variants.
- Open the oldest plausible matches and compare the entire scene, not merely a similar cloud or explosion.
- Record the earliest date found, the uploader’s context and whether the old material depicts a different incident.
Reuters Institute guidance identifies InVID, reverse-image services and metadata tools as aids for investigating visual evidence. Tool names and availability change, search indexes are incomplete and a result can be misinterpreted. Tools locate material; they do not independently certify truth.

Location is not event identity
Once a landmark matches, test chronology again. Compare construction stages, seasonal foliage, damage that appears in later imagery, weather reports and the angle of shadows. A clip can be genuinely filmed in a conflict zone and still be recycled from an earlier battle, a training exercise or an unrelated explosion. The correct finding may therefore be “real footage, wrong date” or “real place, unestablished incident.”
Handling official statements and military claims
Official sources can provide primary records, casualty registries, maps, air-raid notices and access to specialists. They can also have a direct interest in blame, morale and international opinion. Neither blanket trust nor blanket dismissal is sound.

- Statement: what the institution says happened.
- Evidence: documents, imagery, sensor data or witnesses it releases.
- Independent assessment: what outside evidence supports, challenges or leaves unresolved.
Use explicit attribution for allegations and rumors. Reuters standards advise distinguishing fact from rumor and making attribution clear. If an official account changes, preserve the earlier wording and explain what new evidence or correction prompted the change. A later denial does not erase an earlier claim; both belong in the evidence timeline.

Urgency and emotional force
Breaking news rewards speed, while fear and outrage reduce careful attention. Pause before forwarding a post that demands immediate sharing, uses absolute language or presents graphic material without a source. Ask whether sharing adds verified information or merely amplifies an allegation.
Repetition mistaken for confirmation
Wire copy, automated summaries and synchronized posts can create an illusion of consensus. Trace each report to its underlying witness, document or image. If all roads lead to one anonymous account, describe it as one source.
Credentials mistaken for proof
A blue check, military uniform, television studio or professional camera says little about this claim’s accuracy. Credentials may improve access or accountability, but they cannot substitute for evidence.

True media, false caption
Recycled footage is especially common during major breaking events. The image may be authentic, the location may be correct and the caption may still be false about date, actors or casualties. Verify every element separately.
Inability to verify treated as debunking
War zones restrict access, communications fail and original files disappear. “Unverified” is an honest result, not a weak substitute for certainty. State what would be needed to resolve the question and avoid presenting speculation as a correction.
A practical verification worksheet
Use this compact record when deciding whether to publish, cite or share a claim:
- Claim: write the exact assertion and list its location, date, actor and consequence.
- Source: record the earliest uploader or document, identity, access and publication time.
- Direct observations: list only what the media or document itself shows.
- Inferences: mark conclusions that require interpretation, such as weapon type or responsibility.
- Origin search: note reverse-image results, earlier uploads and caption variants.
- Geolocation: list matching landmarks, signs, terrain and any unresolved alternatives.
- Chronology: compare weather, shadows, construction, damage and known events.
- Corroboration: identify separate witnesses, records, angles or datasets and map their evidence chains.
- Contradictions: record credible evidence that conflicts with the claim.
- Finding: choose a calibrated label and state the strongest remaining uncertainty.
This log also makes later corrections possible. If new evidence changes the finding, readers can see which element changed rather than receiving an unexplained reversal.

Verification does not require unlimited exposure to violence. Decide whether viewing or sharing the image is necessary for the public-interest question. Use the least graphic frame that allows the check, warn colleagues before opening disturbing material and avoid reposting it when a description or blurred still is sufficient. Bellingcat’s conflict guidance notes both the prevalence of misleading captions and the potential harm of graphic content. Ethical handling protects people depicted, witnesses and investigators without lowering the evidentiary standard.
What a responsible conclusion sounds like
A useful assessment names the strongest established element and the unresolved ones. For example: “The footage matches the eastern district based on the bridge and tower visible in three frames. An earlier upload places the recording on 4 March, not the claimed 18 October. It therefore supports the location but not the date or the allegation that it shows today’s attack.”
That sentence is more informative than “real” or “fake.” It preserves partial truth, prevents overclaiming and tells readers what to check next. No universal method can settle every wartime post; access to the original file, reliable records and genuinely independent evidence may remain unavailable. The disciplined response is to keep uncertainty visible and update the assessment when the evidence changes.
