To add subtitles in desktop VLC, play the video, open Subtitle or Subtitles, choose Add Subtitle File, and select your subtitle file—usually an .srt. For subtitles already inside the video, choose Subtitle Track instead. These controls load subtitles for playback; they do not permanently insert them into the video.
Before you add subtitles
VLC handles three different kinds of subtitles:
- Embedded subtitles are tracks stored inside a container such as an MKV. You select or disable them in VLC.
- External subtitles are separate files, commonly
.srt,.ass,.ssa,.sub,.idxor.smi. VLC documents support for these and other formats in its subtitle guide. - Burned-in subtitles are part of the picture itself. They cannot be selected, restyled or removed in VLC, as explained in the VideoLAN FAQ.
SRT is the simplest choice for beginners: it is a plain-text file containing caption text and start and end timestamps. The file must match the particular video release; a subtitle made for another frame rate, edit or episode may be mistimed.
Select subtitles already included in the video
- Open and start playing the video.
- Open Subtitle or Subtitles in the menu bar.
- Choose Subtitle Track.
- Select the language or track you want. Choose Disable to hide selectable subtitles.
Menu wording can vary slightly between Windows, macOS, Linux and VLC builds. The desktop menu structure is described in VideoLAN’s menu-bar documentation.
Add an external subtitle file on desktop VLC
While the video is playing
- Start the video in VLC.
- Choose Subtitle/Subtitles → Add Subtitle File.
- Browse to the subtitle file, select it and click Open.
The captions should appear immediately if the file is valid and its timestamps fit the video. This is the primary method documented by VideoLAN.

When opening the media
- Open VLC’s media-opening dialog.
- Select the video and enable Use a subtitle file.
- Browse to the subtitle file, then start playback.
This alternative is useful when you want to choose the video and subtitle together before playback.
Make VLC load subtitles automatically
Put both files in the same folder and give them the same base name:
Documentary.mp4
Documentary.srt
This convention is recommended in the University of Texas SRT guide. For multiple languages, names such as Documentary.en.srt, Documentary.es.srt and Documentary.fr.srt can help identify tracks, although language suffix handling is not guaranteed for every build or container. If automatic detection fails, add the file manually. Extract subtitles from ZIP or RAR archives first, and make sure the extension is really .srt rather than a hidden or incorrectly renamed extension.

Find subtitles online with VLSub
VLSub is an optional extension, not a feature that is identical in every VLC installation. VideoLAN’s older desktop documentation references it through the View menu, while the current OpenSubtitles.com project maintains separate setup and usage instructions.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Load the video first.
- Open View → VLSub, or the equivalent extensions entry in your build.
- Choose a language.
- Search by video hash when available; hash matching can identify the exact local release. If that fails, search by title, year, season or episode.
- Select a result and download it, then verify the subtitle track in VLC.
Consult the VLSub usage guide and project page for current configuration. The extension may require an OpenSubtitles.com account, its menu location can change, and online results may not match your exact release. Obtain subtitles lawfully and respect copyright.
Add subtitles on Android
- Play the video in VLC for Android.
- Tap the audio/subtitle icon.
- Open the subtitle-pane options and choose Select subtitle file.
- Use the file picker to locate the local subtitle file and tap it.
The same pane can offer Download subtitles. Select a language, search automatically or enter the title, season and episode manually, then choose a result. VLC’s Android controls and 50-millisecond delay adjustments are documented in the Android video-player guide. Grant file access when requested, and extract subtitle archives before selecting them. Appearance and encoding controls are in Android subtitle settings.

Add subtitles on iPhone or iPad
First transfer both the video and subtitle file into VLC using Wi-Fi Upload, cloud storage, iTunes/Finder or another supported synchronization method. Open the video and use the subtitle controls shown by the installed version; iOS labels and file-selection paths are not identical to desktop VLC. Use Settings → Subtitles to adjust font, relative size, boldness, color and text encoding. See the iOS setup guide and iOS settings documentation.
Fix subtitles that are out of sync
Correct a constant offset
During playback, press H to delay subtitles or G to advance them. VLC changes the timing in 50-millisecond steps. If words appear before the person speaks, delay them; if they appear afterward, advance them.
For a precise value, open Tools → Track Synchronization, find the subtitle-track delay control, and enter a positive or negative value. VideoLAN notes that a positive value advances subtitle timing and a negative value delays it; see the synchronization documentation. This adjustment may apply only to the current playback session.

Handle timing drift
If subtitles begin correctly but gradually become early or late, a simple delay will not correct the changing offset. The usual causes are a different frame rate, duration or video release. Try a subtitle file made for the exact release, or retime the file with dedicated subtitle-editing software.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Change subtitle size, font and position
- Open Tools → Preferences.
- Go to Subtitles/OSD.
- Adjust font family, size, color, boldness, position and available background or outline settings.
- Save the change and restart VLC or the stream if the new style does not appear immediately.
Text subtitles such as SRT can generally be restyled. Image-based DVD or VobSub subtitles cannot be treated like rendered text; for VobSub, select the .idx file rather than the accompanying .sub file. Advanced styling in an .ass file may be defined by the file itself. See VideoLAN’s subtitle documentation.
Fix missing, duplicated or unreadable subtitles
“Add Subtitle File” is missing
- Exit full-screen and start playback first.
- Right-click the video area and inspect its subtitle menu.
- Confirm you are following desktop steps rather than mobile controls.
- Check the documentation for your installed platform because labels differ by build.
The subtitle loads but nothing appears
- Confirm the subtitle track is enabled rather than set to Disable.
- Check that the file has valid timestamps and matches the video.
- Verify that text color, position or size is not making it invisible.
- Try a documented format such as SRT.
- Remember that VLC cannot alter audio-only media or remove burned-in text.
Characters appear as boxes or symbols
Open Tools → Preferences → Subtitles/OSD, change the default text encoding and save. UTF-8 is usually the best modern choice, while older files may use a regional encoding. Restart VLC if necessary. Encoding settings cannot repair a damaged subtitle file, and image subtitles do not use text encoding in the same way. The VideoLAN FAQ documents this remedy.

Subtitles appear twice
An embedded track and an external file may both be active, or burned-in text may be present alongside a selectable track. Open Subtitle Track and disable one selectable source. Burned-in text cannot be turned off.
What VLC subtitle loading does—and does not do
Adding an external file or selecting a track creates a playback overlay. It does not permanently add captions to the video. Permanent “burning in” requires creating a new encoded video with a separate conversion workflow. Likewise, a subtitle delay changes playback timing; it does not rewrite the subtitle file for other players.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can VLC download subtitles automatically?
Desktop VLC may use the optional VLSub extension, and VLC for Android includes a documented subtitle-download option. Availability, account requirements and search results vary by version and service.
Can VLC add two subtitle files at once?
It can expose multiple selectable tracks, but loading both an embedded track and an external file can produce duplicate captions. Disable the unwanted track from Subtitle Track.
Which is better for VLC, SRT or ASS?
SRT is simpler and widely supported. ASS can carry richer styling, but some appearance is controlled by the file and may vary with VLC settings.
Does VLC permanently add subtitles to a video?
No. Selecting a track or loading a file displays subtitles during playback; it does not modify the original video.
