How to Install Apple Music on a Chromebook

Apple Music works on compatible Chromebooks through the Android app, and on other Chromebooks through music.apple.com or an installable Chrome web app.

Apple Music works on a Chromebook in two ways: install the Android app from Google Play on a Chromebook that supports Android apps, or use music.apple.com in Chrome. If Google Play is unavailable, the web player is the supported alternative; you can also install that website as a Chrome web app for a Launcher icon.

Check whether your Chromebook supports Android apps

Google Play is available only on some Chromebooks. First update ChromeOS, then check whether the Play Store controls are present.

  1. Select the time in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Open Settings and install any available ChromeOS update. Restart if prompted.
  3. Return to Settings > Apps.
  4. Look for Manage Google Play preferences.

Google documents this requirement and settings path at its Chromebook Android-app guide. If the option is missing, the Chromebook may not support Android apps, ChromeOS may need updating, or an administrator may have disabled the feature. School- and work-managed devices can restrict Google Play and Android-app installation (Google’s managed Chromebook guidance).

Install the Apple Music Android app

Use this route when Google Play is available. Apple explicitly supports downloading Apple Music from Google Play on Chromebooks that support Android apps (Apple’s Android support instructions).

  1. In Settings > Apps > Manage Google Play preferences, open the Google Play window.
  2. Select More, accept the Google Play Terms of Service, and close the settings window.
  3. Open the Chromebook Launcher and choose Play Store.
  4. Search for Apple Music. Select the official Apple Music app and choose Install.
  5. When installation finishes, open the Launcher and select Apple Music.
  6. Choose Sign In and enter the Apple Account associated with your subscription. Apple also documents More > Settings > Sign In inside the app.

If you see a trial or subscription offer but already pay for Apple Music, do not start a second subscription. Use the sign-in control and the same Apple Account you use for Apple Music.

What the installation does

The result is the Android version of Apple Music, not a native ChromeOS or macOS application. Android apps installed from Google Play are downloaded separately for each Chromebook account; they are not automatically copied from an Android phone or tablet. Google also provides supported display modes such as Phone, Tablet and, for compatible apps, Resizable (Google’s Chromebook Android-app guide).

Use Apple Music without installing an app

When the Chromebook does not support Android apps, Google Play is blocked, or you simply prefer a browser, open https://music.apple.com/ in Chrome.

  1. Open Chrome and go to music.apple.com.
  2. Select Sign In.
  3. Enter the Apple Account linked to your Apple Music subscription.
  4. Use your library, playlists, albums and recommendations in the web player.

Apple says you can access and subscribe to Apple Music at music.apple.com, and Google’s Chromebook documentation lists Apple Music among services that can be streamed on the web (Google’s music-on-Chromebook help).

The website is a separate environment from the Android app. Do not assume that every Android-app feature or identical offline behavior is available in Chrome. Apple advertises offline downloads as an Apple Music subscription feature generally, but Chromebook web-player behavior can differ by platform (Apple Music).

Install the website as a Chromebook web app

A web app gives Apple Music its own Launcher entry and app-style window while still using the website.

Fix common installation problems

“Manage Google Play preferences” is missing

Update ChromeOS, restart, and check Settings > Apps again. If the control remains absent, the model may not support Android apps or a school or employer may have disabled them. Use Apple Music in Chrome, or contact the device administrator.

The Play Store will not open

  1. Restart the Chromebook.
  2. Check the internet connection.
  3. Install any pending ChromeOS update.
  4. Try the Play Store again.

These are Google’s initial recommendations for Play Store problems (Google Play troubleshooting).

Apple Music does not appear in Google Play

Google Play can hide apps that are incompatible with a particular Chromebook. Possible causes include the model’s capabilities, ChromeOS version, account restrictions, administrator policy or regional availability. Google notes that not every Android app works on every Chromebook (Google’s app-compatibility guidance). Use the web player instead.

“Your device is not compatible with this version” appears

Google says this message means that Chromebook cannot download that app through the normal Play Store route (Google Play compatibility help). Do not treat APK sideloading as the ordinary fix: it can create security, update, signing-in and compatibility problems. The supported alternative is music.apple.com, optionally installed as a web app.

The Chromebook is managed by a school or employer

An administrator can remove Google Play, block Android-app downloads or restrict the Apple Music website. Ask the administrator whether installation is permitted. If the website is allowed but Play Store is not, use the browser or web-app method.

The app appears under the wrong Chromebook account

Google says downloaded Android apps are initially available only to the account that first signed in to the Play Store on that Chromebook (Google’s account guidance). Switch to that account or install the app while signed in to the intended account, subject to device policy.

Apple Music works in Chrome but not in the app

This does not by itself indicate a subscription problem. The Android app depends on Google Play and Android compatibility, while the web version depends on Chrome and access to Apple’s web player. Continue using the web version or resolve the Chromebook compatibility restriction.

Subscription, pricing and regional availability

Installing the app or web app does not itself require payment, but full Apple Music access requires a subscription. Apple offers individual, family and student options and allows signup through the app or music.apple.com.

Prices and introductory offers vary by country, plan, eligibility, date and signup channel. Apple’s plan page currently displays promotional signals, including limited-time offers, alongside conflicting price references, so do not rely on a single universal dollar amount. Check the final offer and renewal price at checkout (Apple Music plan page). Apple also says availability can vary by country or region (Apple’s regional-availability information).

What not to install

iTunes is not the Chromebook solution: Google states that iTunes does not work on Chromebooks (Google’s iTunes compatibility explanation). Use Apple Music’s Android app where supported, or its web player. Apple Music Classical is a separate app included with eligible subscriptions; it is not required to install or use the main Apple Music service (Apple Music).

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
