To caption a YouTube livestream, either turn on YouTube’s live automatic captions if your channel and stream are eligible, or send captions to YouTube from an encoder or supported captioning software. Automatic captions are the simplest option for eligible English-language streams; supplied captions are the alternative when you need a captioner or a different delivery workflow.
Choose a caption method
| Method | Best suited to | What you need to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube automatic captions | Eligible English-language streams using normal latency and clear audio | Enable captions for the individual stream and select Automatic captions. |
| Embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions | Encoders configured to send embedded caption data | Enable the embedded-caption option in YouTube Studio and configure the encoder to send captions. |
| Caption software and HTTP ingestion | Events using supported caption software or a captioner | Enable captions, copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL, and provide it to the captioning workflow. |
YouTube’s requirement is that captions reach YouTube: they can be embedded in the stream or sent through its caption-ingestion workflow. See YouTube’s live caption requirements.
Turn on YouTube automatic live captions
YouTube’s current help instructions describe automatic live captions as English-only and enabled per stream, not as a channel-wide switch. The feature is rolling out to English channels, and YouTube says it is slowly rolling out to channels with more than 1,000 subscribers; access is not guaranteed just because a channel meets that threshold. The option may not appear in your account.
- In YouTube, select Create > Go live.
- Choose Stream in the left menu.
- In the stream settings, turn on Closed captions.
- Choose Automatic captions as the caption source.
- Select the video language. YouTube’s current live automatic-caption instructions list English only.
This route requires normal latency. YouTube says live automatic captions are unavailable with low or ultra-low latency, including some mobile streams. See YouTube’s automatic captioning instructions for the current availability details.

Send captions from an encoder or captioning software
Embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or open the stream.
- Go to Settings > Setup, turn on Closed captions, select Embedded 608/708, and save.
- Configure your encoder to send EIA 608/CEA 708 captions. Depending on the setup, the encoder may read a caption file or encode captions in real time.
- Check the Live Control Room preview to confirm the caption data is reaching the stream.
Although the 608/708 standard supports as many as four language tracks, YouTube currently supports one caption track for this workflow, according to its live caption requirements.
Supported caption software and HTTP ingestion
YouTube documents an HTTP caption-ingestion workflow for events using supported caption software. Its instructions call for adding a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay in Advanced settings, then enabling Closed captions, copying the signed Captions Ingestion URL, giving that URL to the captioner or software, and saving. Each stream entry point can have one caption feed.

Prepare and test captions before going live
- Confirm which caption source you selected and, for automatic captions, that the language is supported and the feature is available for your channel.
- For automatic captions, check that the stream uses normal latency and that spoken audio is clear.
- For embedded captions, verify both the YouTube Studio setting and the encoder’s caption output.
- For HTTP ingestion, confirm the captioner has the correct signed URL, the event delay is configured, and the feed is connected to the intended stream entry point.
- Test with audio and movement similar to the planned event. Preview the stream in the Live Control Room, check messages and stream health, and monitor audio and video quality. YouTube’s guidance is available in its live-streaming tips and stream troubleshooting.
Troubleshoot captions that are missing or wrong
Automatic captions are not available in the settings
The feature may not have rolled out to your channel. YouTube describes it as rolling out to English channels, slowly to channels with more than 1,000 subscribers; it is not a universal setting. Check the current automatic-caption help page for availability.
No automatic captions appear during the stream
Check that the stream is using normal latency, the selected language is English, and the audio is understandable. Unsupported language, poor or unrecognized speech, overlapping speakers, and simultaneous languages can all prevent captions from appearing. Reduce background noise and avoid speakers talking over one another where possible.

Embedded captions do not appear
Confirm that Closed captions is enabled and Embedded 608/708 is selected in YouTube Studio, then verify the encoder is actually sending EIA 608/CEA 708 caption data. Enabling the Studio setting alone does not create captions.
The external caption feed is not arriving
Check that the captioner or software has the correct signed Captions Ingestion URL for the active stream entry point and that the feed is connected. Verify the required broadcast delay and software compatibility, then check the system clock and whether antivirus software is blocking the captioning application.

Live captions are absent from the saved video
Live automatic captions do not remain on the video after the stream ends. YouTube generates new captions later through its video-on-demand process, and those may differ from the live captions. Review the resulting captions for recognition errors rather than assuming the live track was preserved.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos; it does not caption speech or broadcast from a camera. You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded video, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. StreamNeo does not replace the caption setup above: captions still need to reach YouTube through an appropriate caption workflow.
For an always-on YouTube stream, StreamNeo offers any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day free without a card. Its monthly option is $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo for details, or start your free day.
