How to Add Captions to Prerecorded Sermons in a Continuous YouTube Stream

Prerecorded sermon captions must reach YouTube during live playout. Compare embedded 608/708 captions with an HTTP caption feed, configure either route, and test timing before going public.

To caption a prerecorded sermon in a continuous YouTube live stream, captions must be delivered during playout—either embedded in the outgoing video as EIA-608/CEA-708 data or sent as a synchronized caption feed to YouTube’s live caption-ingestion URL. Uploading an SRT or other caption file to a regular YouTube video does not add captions to a separate livestream. Test the full video-and-caption setup in an unlisted stream before using it publicly.

Choose how captions will reach the live stream

YouTube documents two live-caption routes: embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions in the outgoing video, or a caption feed sent over HTTP POST by compatible software. Choose based on what your encoder or captioning software can actually output. YouTube’s general instructions do not guarantee that a particular encoder or service can import and synchronize your prerecorded sermon’s sidecar file.

Route Use it when Requirements and limits
Embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 Your encoder can read the sermon’s caption format and include caption data in its outgoing video. Enable Embedded 608/708 in the YouTube stream settings and configure the encoder to output EIA-608/CEA-708. File support depends on the encoder and setup. YouTube’s live-caption guidance says it currently supports one embedded caption track. YouTube Help: Live caption requirements
HTTP caption feed Compatible caption software can send captions separately while your encoder sends the sermon video and audio. Enable captions, copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL, and configure the supported software to deliver a synchronized feed. YouTube’s event instructions call for a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay and allow only one caption feed per stream entry point. YouTube Help: Live caption requirements

Set up embedded captions

  1. Check the caption file and encoder together. Ask the encoder vendor whether your specific caption file can be read and emitted as EIA-608/CEA-708 during playback. Do not assume that an SRT or VTT sidecar can be used this way; compatibility depends on the encoder and configuration.
  2. Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or select the stream and set the caption option to Embedded 608/708. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room to connect the encoder. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
  3. Configure the encoder output. Select EIA-608/CEA-708 output and the compatible caption source or file option provided by that encoder. The exact controls vary by product; follow its documentation for the file format, time base, and playback behavior.
  4. Preview and verify. Start an unlisted test, check that captions appear in the Live Control Room preview, and compare their timing with the sermon audio at the beginning and after any transition or restart.

Set up an HTTP caption feed

  1. Enable live captions in the stream setup. In Live Control Room, turn captions on and copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL. Treat it as a stream-specific delivery address and give it only to the compatible captioning software you are configuring.
  2. Configure the caption software. Enter the signed URL and set the software to send the timed captions in sync with the sermon. Confirm with the vendor whether it can import your existing timed file, preserve its time base, and restart cleanly when a sermon or playlist item loops. YouTube specifies the delivery route, not a universal sidecar-file playback procedure.
  3. Set the broadcast delay. For this route, YouTube’s event instructions say to add a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay. Coordinate that setting with the caption-software workflow so captions and sermon audio remain aligned.
  4. Use one feed per stream entry point. YouTube allows only one caption feed to be attached to each stream entry point. Plan a single feed for that entry point rather than trying to attach separate feeds for different caption sources.
  5. Test the entire chain while unlisted. Check caption appearance and synchronization in preview, including after a sermon transition and a loop or playlist restart, before making the stream public.

Why an SRT upload alone does not caption a livestream

YouTube supports caption files such as SubRip (.srt) and SubViewer (.sbv/.sub) for caption tracks on videos. Those files contain text and display timecodes, but uploading one to an ordinary video does not send its captions to a separate continuous live broadcast. The live broadcast still needs embedded captions or a supported live HTTP caption feed. See YouTube Help: Supported subtitle and closed caption files.

Keep captions synchronized through a continuous schedule

A caption timeline must follow the sermon’s actual playout. Confirm whether your encoder or caption service uses the video’s original time base, how it handles seeking or restarting, and whether it can repeat the captions when a video loops. If a playlist moves from one sermon to another, verify that the next caption timeline starts at the correct point rather than continuing the previous file’s timing.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

YouTube’s live caption documentation identifies supported transport methods but does not prescribe one universal way to play a prerecorded sidecar file in sync. Confirm those details with the vendor for your exact file and configuration; then test the beginning, transitions, and restart behavior in an unlisted stream. YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview and monitoring audio and video during streaming. YouTube Help: YouTube live streaming tips

Latency and continuous-stream planning

Do not choose ultra-low latency when you need closed captions: YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation says ultra-low latency does not support closed captions. The API identifies the embedded and HTTP modes as closedCaptionsEmbedded and closedCaptionsHttpPost. Google for Developers: LiveBroadcasts

YouTube distinguishes a broadcast—the event viewers watch—from a stream, the audiovisual feed sent to YouTube. A stream can be bound to up to three broadcasts, and Google describes a continuous 24/7 feed with separate broadcasts started for portions of that feed. That arrangement does not replace live caption delivery: captions still need to arrive through the chosen route. Google for Developers: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams

Tools and equipment to check

YouTube’s live-caption page lists Total Eclipse (Eclipse/AccuCap 6.0.0.5 or greater), Case CATalyst (BCS version 14.52 or greater), CaptionMaker (version 5.22 or later), and StreamText.Net. Those listings do not establish that each product imports and synchronizes a prerecorded sermon’s particular caption file. Ask the vendor specifically about file import, live delivery, timing, and loop or restart behavior.

A hardware encoder with EIA-608/CEA-708 support may be relevant if your current production setup cannot emit embedded captions. Before buying anything, verify that it accepts your caption format and supports the intended live workflow. YouTube notes that expensive equipment is not inherently required; use the equipment you have if it can deliver the required caption signal.

Troubleshoot common caption problems

  • The SRT was uploaded, but viewers cannot see captions on the live stream. A caption track uploaded for a regular video is separate from live caption delivery. Configure embedded 608/708 output or a supported HTTP caption feed.
  • Captions are absent in the Live Control Room preview. Check that the YouTube caption mode matches the encoder output, or that the HTTP software has the current signed ingestion URL and is sending data to the correct stream entry point.
  • Captions appear but are out of sync. Check the caption file’s time base, encoder or software timing, and any broadcast delay. Confirm that video and caption timelines start together; test after a transition or restart.
  • Captions stop or become incorrect after a sermon loops. The caption source may not restart its timeline with the video. Verify loop behavior with the encoder or caption-service vendor and test a complete restart before deployment.
  • The HTTP feed cannot be attached as expected. Check that the software supports YouTube’s caption-ingestion method, that the signed URL is correct, and that no more than one caption feed is attached to that stream entry point.
  • Captions fail in ultra-low latency mode. Use a latency setting that supports closed captions; YouTube says ultra-low latency does not.

Test your captioned file in an unlisted stream before relying on it.
