To keep a church’s YouTube livestream running through a power cut, back up the entire essential chain: the streaming computer or hardware encoder, required camera and audio/video equipment, router, ONT or modem, and any network switch or access point the setup needs. Size the inverter and compatible battery from the equipment’s measured watt load and the number of hours you need—not from a generic VA or battery-Ah rule. A local inverter can keep your equipment powered, but it cannot prevent an interruption to your internet provider’s network.
Map the equipment that must stay on
Start at the camera and follow the signal to YouTube. List every device whose loss would stop or materially disrupt the service:
- Streaming computer or hardware encoder.
- Camera and any essential audio equipment, capture device, or video switcher.
- Router and ONT, modem, or other broadband equipment.
- Network switch or Wi-Fi access point, if the setup depends on one.
A UPS connected only to the router may keep local networking equipment powered, but it will not run the computer, camera, or production gear. Conversely, backing up the encoder while leaving the ONT or router without power may still break the stream. YouTube says network disruption can interrupt a live stream, so treat power and internet availability as separate parts of the plan. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance recommends a reliable connection and testing the setup.
Set a realistic runtime and calculate the load
Measure the essential load
Record the actual watt draw of the equipment that must remain in service. Use a suitable power meter where practical, and check device labels and manuals. Do not simply add maximum adapter ratings if a reliable measurement of normal operating draw is available; do include equipment that starts or changes load during the service.

Choose the outage duration to cover
Decide how many hours the stream must survive without mains power. The right duration depends on the church’s needs and local conditions; there is no universal runtime requirement for a church stream. The combined load and required duration determine the inverter/UPS and battery capacity.
Have the battery sized for the real conditions
Inverter capacity in watts depends on its VA rating and power factor. Battery demand also depends on inverter efficiency, battery depth of discharge, age, temperature, and the discharge rate. A battery’s amp-hour figure or an inverter’s VA rating alone does not establish how long the system will run. Fuji Electric’s UPS-sizing guide explains these factors and recommends checking battery discharge data against the intended runtime. Ask a qualified local installer to verify the sizing and compatibility for your measured load.

Choose a backup arrangement for the whole chain
One inverter/UPS for production and networking
A single appropriately sized system can keep the essential AV and network equipment operating together. Confirm its usable watt capacity, power factor, battery configuration, and expected runtime at the combined measured load. Also check whether its changeover behavior meets the continuity needs of your encoder and other equipment.
A dedicated router UPS plus separate production backup
A smaller UPS or DC mini UPS can be used for a router and ONT, with separate backup for the production equipment. This may be useful when the network devices have specific low-voltage power requirements, but the network-only unit does not keep the full livestream chain alive. Check voltage, connector, polarity where applicable, and runtime in the relevant device manuals. APC reseller guidance describes router/modem backup as a use case, but it is not a substitute for checking the equipment manufacturers’ specifications. APC India router and modem guidance

Compare the details that affect continuity
- Usable watt capacity and power factor, not just the headline VA rating.
- Expected runtime at your measured load.
- Transfer behavior and whether the equipment stays on during changeover.
- Battery chemistry, voltage, compatibility, and whether capacity can be expanded.
- Local servicing, warranty, and total installed cost.
UPS topologies have different operating characteristics. Schneider Electric India describes line-interactive and online double-conversion UPS systems, but that does not make either topology the universal best choice for every church; match the equipment and continuity requirements. Check whether the internet survives a local outage
Keeping the router and ONT powered preserves those devices and your local network; it does not guarantee that the ISP’s equipment or upstream service remains available. Ask your broadband provider whether service in your area can continue during a local power cut and what equipment at its end is backed up. If your encoder supports Ethernet, a wired connection to the router can avoid relying on local Wi-Fi, but it cannot fix an upstream ISP interruption.

Install and test before a service
Have the installation assessed
List the essential equipment before selecting an inverter. Exide recommends considering devices such as computers and Wi-Fi routers when matching an inverter, and advises placing equipment in a dry, well-ventilated location. Follow the chosen inverter and battery manufacturers’ manuals; have a qualified local electrician assess wiring, earthing, transfer arrangements, and ventilation. Do not undertake mains installation work yourself. Exide inverter selection guidance
Rehearse the power-cut scenario
- With the system installed, start a test livestream using the church’s normal encoder, network connection, camera, and audio chain.
- Disconnect mains power only from the backed-up load using the safe test method specified by the installer or equipment manual. Do not disturb building wiring.
- Confirm that every essential device remains on and the encoder maintains its connection.
- Check YouTube’s preview and verify that picture and audio continue as expected.
- Restore mains power, confirm normal operation, and record any devices that failed to stay on or any network interruption.
YouTube recommends testing the setup thoroughly and previewing the stream before starting. A test under battery power can reveal a missing device or a changeover problem before it matters during a service. YouTube live-stream setup guidance

Troubleshoot a stream that drops during a power cut
- The encoder shuts off: Check that the computer or hardware encoder is on the backed-up circuit and that the system is sized for the actual combined load.
- The stream stops even though the encoder stays on: Confirm that the router, ONT/modem, and any required switch or access point also have power. Then check with the ISP whether service remains available during the outage.
- The router is on but the internet is unavailable: Local backup power cannot restore an ISP or upstream network interruption. Ask the provider about outage resilience; do not assume a powered router means broadband is working.
- The UPS switches over but a device restarts: Have the installer check the unit’s transfer behavior and whether the selected system supports the equipment’s continuity requirements.
- The stream runs for less time than expected: Recheck the measured load, battery condition and compatibility, inverter efficiency, and runtime calculation against battery discharge data at the target load.
- Video or audio is missing after the changeover: Check that all essential production devices—not only the encoder—are backed up, then rehearse the complete signal chain again.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the church streams uploaded recordings as a continuous YouTube broadcast rather than going live from a camera, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Your home computer and internet connection do not have to stay on for the playback. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only; it does not replace a live camera production.
- Nothing has to stay powered on at the church for the cloud playback to continue.
- Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required.
See StreamNeo for details. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start the free day at StreamNeo registration.
