If OBS loses its playlist, first find out whether the problem is local playback or whether YouTube has stopped receiving the stream. If YouTube still shows incoming video and audio, restore the OBS source or switch to a rehearsed fallback scene. If ingest is offline, use a tested backup encoder or recovery plan. A stream key reset will not repair a missing OBS playlist.
First determine what viewers are seeing
Check the public YouTube player and the event in Live Control Room. Is YouTube still receiving picture and sound? Is the stream live but showing a frozen image, silence, a blank screen, or the wrong scene? Or has the incoming feed gone offline? These are different problems: a connected encoder can send an unusable scene even when its connection to YouTube remains active.
For a scheduled event, YouTube’s encoder workflow provides a Live Control Room preview before you take the stream live. Use that preview, along with the viewer-facing player, to distinguish a local OBS playback failure from an ingest failure. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers the preview and preparation process.
Recover the OBS playback or scene
Have a volunteer check the OBS setup while another person watches Live Control Room. Confirm that the expected playlist or media source is still present, that the media files are accessible, and that the intended scene is active. If a prepared fallback scene exists, switch to it so viewers have a useful picture while the team investigates.

The exact OBS controls depend on the OBS version and the type of source or playlist in use. The available YouTube guidance does not establish a version-specific procedure for repairing an OBS playlist, so avoid assuming that a particular button, file path, or reset will fix it. Note the OBS version and source type, then follow instructions that match that setup.
If YouTube has stopped receiving the feed
Check the encoder’s connection and YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube documents the stream key as the credential that connects an encoder to the service, together with the server URL. If the encoder reports a stream-start error, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says a new key may be needed; update the encoder with it only when the symptoms point to an ingest or credential problem. A new key does not restore local playlist playback.

If your encoder supports RTMPS, YouTube documents an RTMPS server URL in Live Control Room for use with the stream key. RTMPS encrypts the transport connection; it does not fix a missing playlist. See YouTube’s stream settings and encoder connection guidance and its RTMPS instructions.
Switch to a rehearsed fallback when needed
If the primary OBS setup cannot be restored quickly, use the backup your church has tested. That might be a fallback scene with an announcement slide and appropriate audio, or an independent backup encoder feed. The backup should provide its own dependable media or playback path; simply duplicating the primary computer’s playlist may duplicate the same failure.

YouTube recommends testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then checking that the player rolls over to the backup. That guidance supports rehearsing a failover arrangement, but it does not promise that a backup encoder will recover the primary computer’s playlist or that a particular church configuration will switch without interruption. Test picture, sound, handoff, and volunteer steps under service-like conditions. YouTube’s live encoder guidance includes stream-health and failover preparation advice.
Prepare before the next service
- Set up the event ahead of time, start the encoder before the scheduled event, and check the Live Control Room preview before going live.
- Test the stream and backup arrangement before the service; verify that the right people can access the event.
- Choose encoder settings that suit the available internet connection, and monitor stream health and YouTube messages during the event.
- Keep a local recording and confirm that its file is growing during the event. YouTube includes local recording checks in its encoder preparation advice.
- After the service, record the OBS version, source type, whether the playlist file still exists, whether the source was visible, and whether YouTube received video and audio. Use those details to reproduce and diagnose the fault.
- Stop the encoder after the YouTube event has stopped, following the platform’s event workflow.

A fallback slide, recorded service, or playlist still needs to use material your church is allowed to broadcast. Check permissions for music, video, and other content before streaming; keeping a stream online does not grant rights to the material.
