Twitch’s guide covers captions supplied during a stream, not a general way to add a new track to an existing past broadcast.
Choose the right caption file or workflow
Use the format and upload method supported by the destination platform. A timed caption file includes text and timecodes; a transcript has text but no timing, so a platform may need to synchronize it. W3C identifies WebVTT as the most common web caption format and also lists SRT and TTML. Facebook’s documented upload workflow calls for an SRT file, while YouTube’s interface lets you upload a timed file or submit a transcript for auto-sync. Check the platform’s current controls before exporting.
Captions are not just dialogue: include relevant non-speech audio such as music, sound effects and laughter, and identify speakers when that helps viewers follow the recording. Keep captions synchronized and avoid covering important visual information. W3C distinguishes accessibility captions, which convey relevant sound information, from subtitles that translate speech into another language. W3C WAI’s Captions/Subtitles guidance explains these distinctions.
Add captions to a YouTube recording
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Subtitles from the left menu.
- Select the recorded stream or video.
- Add the caption language if needed, then choose Add under Subtitles.
- Choose a method:
- Upload file: Select whether the file has timing, then upload a caption file with text and timecodes.
- Auto-sync: Paste or upload a transcript in the same language as the speech. YouTube will synchronize it. YouTube says this is not recommended for videos over an hour or audio with poor quality.
- Type manually: Play the recording and enter captions as you go, including meaningful sounds such as applause or thunder where they matter.
- Save or publish the captions, then play the recording with captions enabled to check timing and accuracy.

Add an SRT file to a Facebook video
Facebook’s documented instructions cover videos uploaded to a profile or Page. They do not establish that every kind of Live replay has the same post-publication controls.
- Open the video after it is ready to view.
- Open the post options, choose Edit post, then edit the video.
- Choose Add captions, upload the SubRip (.srt) file, and save.
- Repeat with another language file if you want to add captions in additional languages.

What to do with a Twitch past broadcast
Twitch’s Guide to Closed Captions describes captions supplied during the stream, either embedded in the stream or transmitted through broadcast encoders. It says captions can be displayed when viewers replay a past broadcast if they were available in the original stream. The guide does not document a general way to upload a separate caption file after a past broadcast has been created. If the recording was not captioned live, check Twitch’s current creator controls for that broadcast before relying on a post-publication option.
Review captions before publishing
- Check names, numbers, specialized terms, speaker changes and overlapping speech against the recording.
- Review sections with music or background noise; automated speech recognition may miss words or relevant sounds.
- Include meaningful non-speech sounds and speaker identification where needed to understand what is happening.
- Confirm that captions stay synchronized and do not obscure important visual information.
For YouTube auto-sync, the transcript should be in the same language as the speech and supported by YouTube’s speech recognition. Because YouTube advises against auto-sync for recordings over an hour or with poor audio quality, use a timed file or enter and correct captions manually when those conditions apply.
