To run a nonstop YouTube stream with background music from a VPS, prepare a video and music source on the server, encode them together as one continuous audio-video feed, and send that feed to YouTube using the RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Test the complete pipeline before leaving it unattended: YouTube can interrupt a live stream for detected third-party content, and a VPS does not guarantee a stable encoder or connection.
How the setup works
The VPS runs your encoder. The encoder combines the visual program with music and sends the resulting audio-video feed to YouTube’s ingestion endpoint. In YouTube’s live model, the transmitted feed is a live stream associated with a live broadcast. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide and the LiveStreams API reference.
This is not a YouTube setting that adds a music track independently: the music must be present in the audio your encoder transmits. You can use a graphical encoder such as OBS or a command-line encoder such as FFmpeg. The right choice depends on how you manage the VPS, your playlist needs, restart behavior, and the visibility you want into the process. FFmpeg documents RTMP and RTMPS protocols, but its documentation does not validate a particular YouTube command or playlist-loop configuration: FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.
Before you start
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. Create or schedule a broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room and locate its stream settings. The interface can change, so follow the current labels there.
- A VPS and an encoder. Put the visual material and music files on the server, then configure an encoder to emit both video and audio continuously. No universal VPS size, bitrate, or resource benchmark is established for this workload; validate capacity with your own media and settings.
- Music you are authorized to use in a continuous YouTube livestream. Confirm that the permission covers livestreaming and check whether the rights owner needs to add your channel to a Content ID allowlist.
- The RTMPS URL and stream key shown for your broadcast. Treat the key like a credential; do not expose it in public logs or share it. If it is exposed, rotate it in YouTube’s controls.
Set up the nonstop stream from the VPS
- Enable live streaming and prepare the broadcast. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the broadcast and open its stream settings. Select the RTMPS URL and copy the matching stream key. Use the URL YouTube currently displays, not an endpoint copied from an old tutorial. YouTube’s instructions are in Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Prepare your audio and video sources on the VPS. Place the visual material and music or playlist where the encoder can access them. Select an encoder pipeline that continuously outputs video and audio together. Playlist looping is implementation-specific; the official material here does not prescribe a particular FFmpeg command or guarantee that a chosen configuration will loop correctly.
- Configure the encoder for YouTube’s RTMPS ingest. Enter the RTMPS URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming destination settings. Ensure the encoder supports RTMPS. Google’s ingestion guide specifies a valid
rtmpsURL and YouTube endpoint/application path, port 443, and the correct server hostname for TLS Server Name Indication (SNI) authentication. - Run a short test before making it continuous. Start the encoder and check the YouTube stream health information. Confirm that the video is visible, audio is present, and the feed remains connected. The LiveStreams API health status includes issues such as
noAudioStream, videoBitrateLow, andframerateMismatch; these are diagnostic signals, not universal settings recommendations. - Make unattended operation observable and recoverable. Configure a service supervisor that fits your VPS operating system, and monitor both the encoder process and the stream from outside the server. Test what happens when the encoder exits or the connection drops; do not assume a restart policy works until you have verified it with your chosen OS, encoder build, and media.
RTMPS settings and connection details
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL, adding encryption between the encoder and the ingestion service. In Live Control Room, find the RTMPS URL under Stream settings and use it with the stream key for that broadcast. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide requires the valid endpoint and application path, port 443, and the hostname used for SNI authentication. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes RTMP as multimedia streaming over TCP/IP and RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection; it does not establish a one-size-fits-all command for YouTube.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Protect the stream from music-rights interruptions
YouTube says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If YouTube identifies third-party content, it may show a placeholder image and warn you. If the content continues, the live stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
A license alone may not prevent an interruption. YouTube says a rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Before streaming, verify that the license expressly covers continuous YouTube livestream use and ask the rights owner about allowlisting where applicable. If you archive the completed stream, Content ID claims on that archived content are made after the stream ends. Not archiving does not remove live-stream scanning or enforcement.

Troubleshooting a VPS stream
- RTMPS connection times out or fails with an SSL error: Check that you used the RTMPS URL from the current Live Control Room settings rather than an RTMP address, that the encoder supports RTMPS, and that outbound port 443 is available. Confirm the endpoint, application path, and hostname/SNI requirements against Google’s ingestion guide.
- YouTube reports missing audio: Confirm that the encoder is receiving the intended music source and that its outgoing program includes an audio stream. Check for
noAudioStreamin the stream health information and test playback from the start of the encoder pipeline. - The stream health reports low video bitrate or a frame-rate mismatch: Review the encoder’s output and compare it with the broadcast configuration. The API identifies
videoBitrateLowandframerateMismatchas possible health issues, but the available documentation does not provide a bitrate or frame-rate value that is right for every VPS and program. - The stream stops when left unattended: Check whether the encoder process exited, whether the VPS lost network access, and whether the service supervisor restarted the process. Validate restart behavior and external monitoring before relying on the setup for continuous operation.
- YouTube interrupts the broadcast despite a music license: Check for a copyright warning and contact the rights owner to confirm that the license covers livestream use and that your channel is allowlisted in Content ID if needed.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a nonstop YouTube channel built from uploaded videos rather than a live camera, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality-based tiers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
