You can keep a prerecorded video live on YouTube with FFmpeg inside a Docker container, but Docker does not make the stream itself reliable: FFmpeg handles media and transmission, Docker manages the process environment, and YouTube supplies the ingest URL and stream key. Build and test each layer separately. Before relying on a single continuous broadcast, account for YouTube’s warning that streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived and may have limited or unavailable DVR rewind.
What the setup does—and what Docker does not do
In this arrangement, FFmpeg reads a video file and sends an encoded live feed to YouTube. Docker packages the FFmpeg process and its runtime environment; it does not provide the video, YouTube credentials, a hosting computer, monitoring, or a guarantee that a stopped stream will resume correctly.
You can run the container on a computer at home or on a remote host. A local machine is straightforward to access, but it and its network connection must remain available. A remote host separates the broadcast from your home computer, but brings hosting costs and operational responsibilities. The available documentation here does not establish a particular Docker image, restart policy, secret-injection method, or complete tested container command, so treat those as deployment choices to verify rather than a proven recipe.
Prepare the YouTube stream
- Enable live streaming for the channel. If this is the channel’s first time going live, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Follow the current encoder workflow in YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.
- Create or select the stream in Live Control Room. Copy the current server URL and stream key provided there. Enter them in your encoder configuration; do not put the key in a public repository, a published tutorial, a container image, or logs.
- Choose secure ingest. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its documented RTMPS connection uses port 443, a valid YouTube endpoint, and a valid application path. Use the exact endpoint and key supplied for your stream, not a guessed URL. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion documentation.
- Preview before depending on it. Start with a short test and confirm the Live Control Room preview, audio, video, and access to the watch page before leaving the job unattended.
Choose encoder settings for the source and connection
Match the output to the video you have and the upload capacity of the host. YouTube’s recommendations below are H.264 video bitrates, not guarantees of quality; consult its current encoder settings and bitrate table for the target resolution and other codecs.

| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 240p–720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
YouTube’s guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a two-second keyframe interval recommended, with four seconds as the maximum. Its audio guidance lists 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1. These figures are platform guidance accessed in 2026; verify the live table before configuring a long-running broadcast because recommendations can change.
Do not select an output bitrate solely because it appears in the table. The host’s sustained upload capacity must accommodate the video and audio stream. If it cannot, reduce the resolution or frame rate and choose the matching recommendation. A source file’s properties and the FFmpeg build’s available encoders affect the exact command; validate your chosen output settings rather than assuming Docker selects them automatically.

Run FFmpeg in Docker without treating an example as a turnkey recipe
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation shows this generic real-time file-to-RTMP example:
ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream
This is an FFmpeg documentation example, not a verified YouTube command or a complete Docker deployment. It illustrates reading a file in real time and sending a stream to a generic RTMP destination. Replace the generic destination only with the current endpoint and stream key from YouTube, and validate the command against the installed FFmpeg build and the output protocol you choose. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation.

For Docker, decide separately how the container obtains the media file, how it receives credentials without exposing them, what happens when FFmpeg exits, and how you will observe the process. The official material cited here does not establish one current image or a tested combination of Docker settings for those jobs. Check the documentation for your selected image and Docker version, test its signal handling and recovery behavior, and do not assume a container restart resumes the file at the same timestamp or restores the YouTube broadcast.
The generic FFmpeg example does not itself demonstrate looping a file or behavior after a disconnect. If your intended program repeats prerecorded material, verify the looping behavior with the exact FFmpeg command and build you deploy, then test what happens after both an FFmpeg exit and a dropped ingest connection. Do not promise an automatic return to the previous point in the file unless your implementation has been tested to do that.

Operate a continuous stream and plan for recovery
A long-running broadcast needs observation, not just a process that remains alive. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend preparation and monitoring; they do not prescribe Docker-specific recovery settings. Use this practical checklist during testing and operation:
- Inspect the Live Control Room preview before leaving the stream running.
- Check that the public watch page is accessible to the intended audience.
- Monitor audio and video quality, including whether the feed stalls or becomes silent.
- If recording locally, confirm that the archive file is growing and that the host has enough storage.
- Test your chosen process recovery and reconnection behavior deliberately; do not infer it from Docker being in use.
YouTube’s recommendations are in its live-streaming tips. A restart policy can restart a process, but it is not proof that YouTube has resumed receiving a valid stream. Decide who or what will detect a failure, how credentials remain private during recovery, and how you will confirm the stream is live again.

Understand archive and DVR limits before choosing one uninterrupted event
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends making a local archive backup. Separately, DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams, including streams longer than 12 hours. These limits matter if you need a complete replay or expect viewers to rewind, even when uninterrupted live presence is the priority. Consult YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.
Clear rights for every part of the loop
Looping a recording does not grant permission to broadcast it. YouTube requires live content to comply with its Community Guidelines and creators to have the necessary rights to exploit the content. Use video and audio you own or are licensed to stream, including music and other material embedded in a recording. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions before going live.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream of uploaded prerecorded video without maintaining your own Docker host, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the stream running with your computer off and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
