To add Nightbot to Twitch, sign in to Nightbot with your Twitch account, authorize it, open the Control Panel, click Join, then follow the dashboard’s instructions to make Nightbot a moderator. Signing in alone does not add it to chat. Once it has joined, test !commands in your channel.
Nightbot is a browser-based chatbot for commands, timers, giveaways, and basic spam protection; there’s no desktop bot to install. This guide covers setup, sensible first settings, and what to check if it doesn’t respond.
Before you connect Nightbot
You’ll need access to the Twitch account that owns or manages the channel, a browser, and permission to authorize a third-party app and change the channel’s moderation settings. Nightbot’s setup documentation describes a web-based flow through its Control Panel. See Nightbot’s setup guide.
Decide whether you want Nightbot for commands alone or for moderation too. If you already use another chatbot, check its commands, timers, and filters first: overlapping bots can post duplicate announcements or compete over the same trigger.

Nightbot is not broadcasting software. It doesn’t create OBS scenes, overlays, or alerts, and it doesn’t replace Twitch’s native moderation controls or human moderators.
How to add Nightbot to your Twitch channel
- Open the official Nightbot site. Go to nightbot.tv and choose the login option.
- Choose Twitch. Select Twitch as your sign-in provider. Nightbot currently lists Twitch, YouTube, Trovo, and SOOP as supported platforms. Open the Nightbot login page.
- Authorize the app. Review the Twitch authorization screen and approve access only if you’re on the official Nightbot site and the account shown is the one you intend to connect. Nightbot then directs you to its Control Panel. If you authorized the wrong Twitch account, log out and repeat the process with the correct one.
- Open the dashboard and click Join. The Join action is separate from login and authorization. It starts the process of connecting Nightbot to channel chat.
- Follow the moderator instructions. Nightbot will show instructions for granting the bot moderator status. In a typical setup this may involve entering
/mod nightbotin the channel chat, but use the exact bot username and instruction shown in your own Control Panel. Don’t assume the username if the dashboard shows something different. - Test in chat. Send
!commands. A working setup should return a response or link for the channel’s commands. This is a low-risk first test.
Moderator status matters because some Nightbot moderation and management actions require it. Grant only the role needed for your setup, and keep Twitch’s own moderation settings and trusted human moderators in place. Nightbot explains command permissions and moderator-controlled functions.
Check that Nightbot is working
After !commands, check that Nightbot appears in channel chat or the chat user list. If you plan to use moderation features, verify that the intended Nightbot account has moderator status. Test commands while the stream is live if a feature depends on live channel activity.

Add your first custom command
In the Control Panel, open Commands and choose Add Command. Set the trigger, response, user level, and cooldown; an alias is optional. Command names can’t contain spaces. An exclamation mark is customary, though Nightbot’s documentation says it isn’t technically required. See the command settings.

- Command: The trigger viewers type, such as
!socials. - Message: The response Nightbot posts.
- Userlevel: Who is allowed to use the command.
- Cooldown: How soon it can be used again.
- Alias: An optional alternate trigger or command that calls another command.
Useful starter examples include:
!socials— “Follow me on Twitch, YouTube, and Discord: [your link]”!discord— “Join the community Discord: [your invite]”!schedule— “Streams are usually live on [days] at [time and time zone].”!rules— A short reminder of the channel’s key rules or where to read them.!lurk— A friendly response for viewers who are listening quietly.
Replace every bracketed example with your actual details; don’t leave placeholder links or times in a live command. For commands everyone can use, a starting global cooldown of 5–15 seconds can help prevent repeated messages. Adjust it for your channel’s activity.
Choose command permissions carefully
Nightbot has user levels such as Everyone, Subscriber, Regular, VIP, Moderator, and Owner or channel manager. Use the least permissive level that fits the job. General information like !socials can usually be available to everyone; commands that change channel settings or manage filters should be restricted to the owner or trusted moderators. Nightbot’s API documentation describes its permission levels.
For beginners, editing commands in the dashboard makes the message, permission, and cooldown settings easier to review together. Moderators can also manage custom commands through Nightbot’s default !commands tools.
Set up timers without flooding chat
Timers post a message on a schedule, but the interval is not a guarantee that a message will appear every time: Nightbot also checks a minimum Chat Lines threshold over five minutes. If chat is too quiet, the timer may wait rather than post. See Nightbot’s timer settings.
- Open Timers in the Control Panel and choose Add.
- Give the timer a name and write a short message.
- Set the interval and minimum Chat Lines threshold.
- Add an optional alias if appropriate, then save and confirm the timer is enabled.
For example, you might set “Remember to follow if you’re enjoying the stream!” to post every 15 minutes when there have been at least five chat lines in the relevant five-minute window. Treat that as a starting point, not a universal ideal.

Keep messages brief, avoid stacking several timers on the same interval, and rotate repetitive announcements. Disable or adjust them if they interrupt a special event. Nightbot cautions against excessive timer messages because they can feel like spam.

Nightbot’s Spam Protection settings include filters for blacklisted words and phrases, capitalization, emotes, links, symbols, and repetitions. Review the available filters. Begin with the specific problem your channel actually has instead of enabling every filter at maximum strength.
- Enable link protection if unwanted links are a recurring problem.
- Whitelist legitimate destinations your viewers may share, such as Discord invites, donation pages, YouTube links, social profiles, Twitch clips, community or game links, and sponsor URLs.
- Add only clearly prohibited terms or phrases to a blacklist.
- Use caps, emote, symbol, and repetition controls cautiously; expressive chat can otherwise be caught unnecessarily.
- Test changes with trusted moderators and review false positives after a stream.
If a filter blocks ordinary viewers, temporarily disable that filter, identify whether links, caps, symbols, emotes, repetitions, or a blacklist term caused the problem, then reduce its strictness or adjust its whitelist. Twitch’s native moderation tools remain useful for channel-wide rules that shouldn’t depend on Nightbot.
Use Regulars, giveaways, and other features deliberately
Regulars lets you assign trusted viewers a Nightbot user level. You can manage Regulars in the Control Panel or with !regulars. They may be exempt from some spam filters or receive access to selected commands, but Regular is not the same as Twitch moderator status and should not be treated as a grant of moderation powers.
Nightbot documents three giveaway modes: Active User selects someone who spoke during a chosen period; Keyword makes eligible viewers enter a word; and Random Number draws a number for eligible viewers to match. Before a giveaway, explain the entry rules and eligibility. Changing a keyword resets eligibility, eligibility can be limited by user level, and repeated keyword entries may be caught as spam. Nightbot selects a winner; it does not establish that a giveaway complies with applicable age, location, prize, tax, or platform-promotion rules. The broadcaster is responsible for those terms.

Command availability and effects can depend on channel permissions, account status, integrations, or current Twitch rules. Check the current Nightbot command list before relying on a specific command.

Check these items in order:
- Nightbot is logged in to the intended Twitch account.
- The correct channel is selected in the Nightbot dashboard.
- You clicked Join after authorizing the account.
- Nightbot is present in chat or the channel’s user list.
- Nightbot has moderator status if the command or action requires it; verify the username shown by the dashboard.
- The command is enabled, spelled correctly, and uses the configured trigger.
- The command is not on cooldown and your account meets its required user level.
- Another bot is not using the same trigger or posting the same timer.
- Twitch authorization for Nightbot has not been revoked.
The most common setup omission is authorizing Nightbot but not clicking Join. If it has joined but can’t moderate, repeat the moderator instructions shown in the dashboard and confirm that you gave the role to the correct account.
If a custom command alone fails, also check for spaces in the command name, an incorrect user level, an overly long or malformed response, or variables that aren’t configured as expected. If a timer doesn’t appear, check both that it is enabled and that chat met its minimum Chat Lines threshold.
When Nightbot is enough—and when to choose another bot
Nightbot is a straightforward fit if you mainly need commands, timers, basic filters, Regulars, and giveaways through a browser dashboard. It may be less suitable if you want an extensive loyalty-points system, chat games, queues, or deeper integration with overlays and a broader creator-tool suite.
