For a simple title overlay, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video Source to play the cartoon playlist, Tuna to read the selected source’s media information and write a formatted title to a file, and an OBS Text Source to display that file. This shows a title only when the video provides usable metadata; OBS cannot identify an episode from its images.
What you need—and what the title depends on
- OBS Studio and VLC installed on the streaming computer. OBS’s VLC Video Source requires VLC, and OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS VLC Video Source documentation.
- Tuna, a third-party OBS plugin that supports information from OBS VLC sources and can format selected fields for output. Follow the Tuna project instructions for installation and compatibility with your OBS build and operating system.
- Cartoon files whose media metadata includes a useful title, or another dependable way to map each file to its episode name. Available fields depend on what the source supplies; a file without a usable title may produce a blank or unhelpful overlay.
OBS’s source documentation reviewed for this workflow dates to 2022. Dialog names or behavior can differ by installed build, so verify the setup on the computer that will host the stream before relying on it.
Set up the playlist and live title
- Confirm the VLC source is available. In OBS, open the Sources box and select +. Check for VLC Video Source. If it is missing, verify that VLC is installed and that its bitness matches the OBS requirement above.
- Add the cartoon playlist. Choose VLC Video Source, create the source, and add the cartoon files to its playlist. Enable Loop Playlist to restart playback after the playlist reaches its end. Enable shuffle only if you want the order randomized. The OBS documentation describes these playlist controls.
- Point Tuna at the right source. Open Tuna’s settings and select the OBS scene and VLC source that carry the cartoons. Its project documentation lists VLC-source support and configuration for mapping a VLC source and outputting a title or “now playing” field.
- Configure title output. In Tuna, choose a text-file output and select the title field or a suitable formatting string. Tuna’s OBS forum resource describes file output and formatting. The available fields depend on the source, so a title format cannot create metadata that is absent from a file.
- Add the file as an OBS text overlay. In Sources, select + and add a Text source. Enable its option to read from a file, then choose Tuna’s output file. OBS documents text sources that can read file-backed text in its Text Sources guide.
- Place and style the overlay. Keep the Text Source above the VLC Video Source in the source list so it renders over the cartoon. Position and style it in the preview; check that it remains readable against both light and dark scenes.
- Test transitions before going live. Play several files and confirm the displayed title changes when the playlist moves to the next item. If it does not, check the VLC source selected in Tuna, the output-file path selected in OBS, and the title metadata in the affected files.
Choose between a text file and a browser overlay
| Method | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Text Source reading Tuna’s output file | A straightforward title label with minimal layout needs. | Styling is handled in OBS, and the displayed title depends on usable source metadata. |
| OBS Browser Source | Custom typography, animation, or a webpage-style layout. | You need to provide a local HTML page or URL and connect it to reliable title data; OBS’s Browser Source is not a ready-made cartoon title widget. |
OBS says Browser Source can load a local HTML file or URL and use custom viewport dimensions. See the Browser Source documentation. Either overlay method still needs a dependable title value from the media or a separate mapping.
Troubleshoot missing or incorrect titles
- No VLC Video Source option: Install VLC and check the OBS/VLC bitness requirement; restart OBS after installation.
- The title never appears: Confirm Tuna is pointed at the scene and VLC source actually playing the playlist, that Tuna writes to the expected file, and that the OBS Text Source is configured to read that same file.
- The title is blank or generic for certain episodes: Inspect those files’ media metadata. Tuna can only output fields supplied by the source; add or correct titles in the media metadata or use a separate, dependable file-to-title mapping.
- The title does not change at a playlist transition: Check whether playback advanced to the expected file, confirm Tuna is watching the playlist’s VLC source, and test several transitions. Do not assume every file has a populated title field.
- The overlay is hidden: Move the Text Source above the VLC source in OBS’s source order and verify its position in the preview.
- Tuna fails to install or behaves differently on the host: Consult its current project instructions and validate the plugin with the installed OBS package and operating system. Compatibility with every current OBS build, OS, or Linux distribution is not established by the cited setup references.
Keep the title workflow separate from rights and uptime
A working playlist and overlay do not establish uninterrupted broadcast operation, automatic restart after failures, or permission to rebroadcast cartoons. Confirm that you have the rights needed for the material and check the current rules that apply to your YouTube channel and stream. The OBS and Tuna setup references explain source and overlay behavior; they do not verify those deployment or copyright questions.
