The conflict is not just backdrop; it gives the crime story its political stakes and deepens the officer’s struggle between professional duty and identification with the community around him.
What is Little Jaffna about?
Directed by and starring Lawrence Valin, Little Jaffna is a French feature set in 2008 in the Paris neighborhood known as Little Jaffna, home to a Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora community. Valin plays Michael Beaulieu, a Tamil-origin police officer sent undercover into Killiz, a criminal gang the film depicts as raising funds for the LTTE. The story is told in French and Tamil, and the production catalogue lists a 100-minute runtime.
As Michael grows closer to the gang and its members, his assignment pulls him between police duty and a personal connection to people whose lives are shaped by violence and displacement. The film also depicts gang activity as helping refugees scarred by the war find passage to France. Killiz and its actions belong to the film’s fictional crime story; they should not be taken as a portrait of Tamil communities generally.
How does the civil war shape the crime story?
The conflict gives the gang’s fundraising and refugee activity their moral and political weight. Michael is not observing a distant history from outside: his Tamil heritage complicates the distance an undercover officer is expected to maintain. The war’s legacy therefore operates on two levels—through the fictional network he investigates and through his divided sense of duty and belonging.

Valin has said he wanted the film to resist a simple political verdict. “Little Jaffna isn’t a pro-Tiger or a pro-government film,” he told Scroll.in. That framing matters: the story uses the war to create tension and competing perspectives, rather than presenting the fictional gang as proof for a broader claim about the conflict or the diaspora.
Why did Lawrence Valin make the film?
A conflict he felt was overlooked
Valin was 20 when the LTTE insurgency came to a brutal end in 2009, and he was living far from Sri Lanka. He has described growing up in France while the war was happening and feeling that people outside the Tamil community did not know or care about it. He wanted the film to make the conflict more legible to viewers beyond that community.

A story shaped by his own identity
Valin identifies two intertwined subjects behind the film: “There were two things I wanted to talk about – the conflict in Sri Lanka, and the identity crisis.” His family history informs the identity journey, but Michael’s undercover assignment and the crime plot are presented as a thriller, not as a literal account of Valin’s life.
Valin has said his mother is from Trincomalee, his father from Jaffna, and his maternal grandmother is Sinhalese. His parents met in Libya and moved between countries before settling in France. He has described feeling like an outsider during visits to Sri Lanka while remaining connected to the place and its people through family and resemblance. Those tensions help explain why belonging in the film is not a simple matter of choosing between France and Sri Lanka.

What conversation did Valin hope the film would start?
Valin described the film as a way for younger generations to talk with older relatives about both the war and their family origins: “The film is like a bridge for us to discuss the war and what happened in Sri Lanka and where we come from.” The phrase captures the film’s dual purpose: it tells an undercover thriller while opening a route into histories that families may find difficult to discuss directly.
Valin has also acknowledged that some older viewers objected to the gangster portrayal. That response points to a tension in using crime fiction to approach community history: a dramatic device can make political and personal conflict visible, but it can also be mistaken for a general representation. The film’s fictional gang should be read as part of its chosen thriller premise, not as a stand-in for Tamil people in Paris.

How does it relate to Dheepan?
Valin has cited Jacques Audiard’s Dheepan as an important precedent that motivated him to write and direct his own story. He sought a different focus for Little Jaffna, building its plot around an undercover officer and the tensions of diaspora identity. He also avoided casting Shobasakthi, also known as Anthonythasan Jesuthasan, in the feature because he did not want viewers to conflate the two films.
The comparison is most useful as a contrast in authorial aims and perspective, not as a contest over which film represents Tamil experience definitively. Valin has argued that viewers do not learn the whole Tamil community from Dheepan; that is his assessment, rather than a settled judgment about the film.
