In a Jay Leno’s Garage feature published September 29, 2025, Jay Leno examines a Cirrus SR22T G7+—an aircraft with two distinct emergency systems behind the “plane that can save itself” idea. CAPS can bring the whole airplane down under a parachute; Safe Return Emergency Autoland can take control and attempt an automated landing. Neither system guarantees a safe outcome, and Safe Return is identified by Cirrus as a G7+ feature, not a feature of every SR22T.
What Jay Leno’s video shows
The Jay Leno’s Garage listing describes the aircraft as an SR22T G7+ and says Leno is joined by Cirrus product directors Ivy and Seneca. Its description frames Emergency Autoland as a response to a pilot emergency and CAPS as an option for an aircraft emergency. That is the show’s framing, not an independent evaluation of either system’s performance. Watch the feature.
Can the Cirrus SR22T land itself?
On the SR Series G7+, Cirrus identifies Safe Return Emergency Autoland, a system that can take control after activation and carry out an automated landing sequence. Cirrus says it communicates with air traffic control, selects a suitable airport, navigates while avoiding terrain and weather, lands, stops and shuts down the engine. The system is separate from CAPS: it aims to land the aircraft rather than lower it under a parachute.
Cirrus describes the system as using sensors, algorithms and automated flight controls to land without pilot input. The company also calls it the “world’s first FAA-approved autonomous emergency landing system integrated into a single-engine piston aircraft.” Both are manufacturer statements, not independent conclusions about how reliably it handles every emergency. Does every SR22T have Safe Return?
No such broad claim is supported: Cirrus identifies Safe Return on SR Series G7+ aircraft. The generation matters. The manufacturer’s page does not establish that earlier SR22T models have the same system, so buyers and pilots should confirm equipment on the specific aircraft rather than infer it from the SR22T name.
What is the Cirrus plane parachute?
CAPS—the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System—is a whole-airplane parachute, not a pilot parachute. When deployed, it is intended to lower the aircraft as a unit. Cirrus says CAPS is standard equipment on the SR Series. It is a different kind of response from Safe Return: one deploys a parachute; the other attempts an automated airport landing. Cirrus’s company history calls CAPS the industry’s first general-aviation parachute system produced in an FAA-certified aircraft. That is the manufacturer’s historical characterization. Cirrus, “Redefining Safety,” March 31, 2020.

Other safety features are not substitutes for either system
Cirrus also lists several systems intended to help prevent or respond to developing control problems:
- Electronic Stability and Protection (ESP): Cirrus says it helps correct unusual flight attitudes.
- Flap airspeed protection: listed as a separate aircraft protection feature.
- Cuffed wing: designed to minimize spin entry after an inadvertent stall, according to Cirrus.
- Stick shakers: warn of an impending stall.
These features serve different roles from deploying CAPS or initiating Safe Return. Their presence does not turn either emergency system into a guarantee. Cirrus SR Series.
