Tate McRae joins Morgan Wallen on “What I Want,” a country collaboration on Wallen’s 2025 album I’m The Problem. McRae said the song itself—and her interest in making country music—motivated her to take part.

What is “What I Want”?

“What I Want” is credited to Morgan Wallen and Tate McRae and appears on Wallen’s album I’m The Problem. Apple Music’s US listing dates the track May 16, 2025, while the official Morgan Wallen audio upload is dated May 15. Those are different platform dates: one is the date shown on the song listing, the other the upload date.

The Associated Press characterized the track as a country song with crossover appeal and reported that it was the first time Wallen had featured a female vocalist on one of his songs. On June 19, 2025, AP also named it as a contender in its editorial selection of country crossover songs of the summer; that was a critic’s pick, not a formal award or chart ranking.

Why did Tate McRae join the collaboration?

McRae told TIME: “For me, it really was about the song, and me wanting to do country music.” That is the clearest public explanation of her decision in the cited coverage. TIME also reported that listeners praised the vocal blend, while some McRae fans objected to the pairing, in part because of Wallen’s past controversies.
