Super Bowl LIX was available to stream free on Tubi on February 9, 2025, with live 4K viewing on compatible devices. That made the game accessible through another route alongside broadcast and other streaming outlets; it did not prove that cable TV had become irrelevant. Tubi’s guidance required a free account, and its 4K checklist included a 4K television, compatible streaming device, 4K-ready HDMI cable and solid internet connection.
What happened with Tubi and Super Bowl LIX?
Super Bowl LIX was played on February 9, 2025. FOX made its telecast available free on Tubi, and FOX Sports said the FOX and FOX Deportes broadcasts were streamed live in 4K on compatible devices as part of the platform takeover. These details describe that event, not a standing promise about future Super Bowls. FOX Sports’ event announcement listed FOX, FOX Deportes, Tubi, Telemundo and NFL digital properties as viewing options, with unauthenticated access across devices.
“Unauthenticated” meant viewers did not need a pay-TV login to access the listed coverage; it should not be read as a guarantee that every outlet offered the same picture quality or supported 4K. FOX Sports specifically tied 4K to compatible devices and the FOX and FOX Deportes broadcasts.
How to watch it free and what 4K required
For the event, Tubi said viewers needed a free account and could use its app or website. Tubi’s event help page gave this 4K equipment checklist: Tubi’s Super Bowl LIX help page.

The help page did not provide a model-by-model compatibility list. Having a 4K television alone therefore did not establish that a particular streaming device could receive the 4K stream. Viewers needed to check their own equipment and connection. Tubi’s instructions were event-specific and do not establish requirements for later sports streams.

| Figure | What it measures | Attribution and context |
|---|---|---|
| 15.5 million | Peak concurrent streaming viewers | Tubi’s reported figure for Super Bowl LIX in 2025. Tubi announcement, February 11, 2025. |
| 13.6 million | Average-minute audience for the Tubi simulcast | Tubi’s reported figure for the event in 2025. Tubi announcement, February 11, 2025. |
| 24 million | Unique viewers across game-day programming | Tubi’s reported figure; it covers game-day programming rather than only the live game. Tubi announcement, February 11, 2025. |
| 127.7 million | Average U.S. audience across television and streaming | Nielsen figure reported by the Associated Press on February 11, 2025. AP noted expanded out-of-home measurement in all states except Hawaii and Alaska. Associated Press report. |
Tubi also said the 4K live stream used FOX’s livestreaming operation in Tempe, Arizona. The audience and technical-operation figures are claims attributed to Tubi, not independent measurements established by the cited announcement. AP’s cross-platform average audience has a different scope and denominator from Tubi’s platform-specific metrics.
Does a free stream mean cable TV is irrelevant?
No. The event showed that viewers had several ways to access the game, including a free streaming option, broadcast outlets and NFL digital properties. That is evidence of expanded distribution choices, not proof that cable has become irrelevant or that its use is in long-term decline. The 127.7 million average audience reported by AP combines television and streaming, so it cannot isolate Tubi’s contribution or establish a cable trend.

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
A broader claim about cable’s relevance would require separate longitudinal evidence about viewing habits or subscriptions. Super Bowl LIX alone supports a narrower conclusion: major live sports can be offered through free streaming alongside other distribution routes.
