Vhagar is larger than Vermithor, but the available descriptions do not establish that she would necessarily win a fight. Vermithor is ranked immediately below her among Westeros’s dragons; there are no reliable comparative measurements or defined combat rules that turn that ranking into a certain outcome.
How powerful is Vermithor compared to Vhagar?
The clearest comparison is size: Vhagar is older or larger than Vermithor, while Vermithor is described as one of the largest dragons and second only to Vhagar. That establishes a close top-of-the-ranking comparison, not a numerical gap. The available sources give no dependable lengths, wingspans, weights, or percentage difference.
The wording in Fire & Blood, reproduced by Time’s 2024 dragon-riding explainer, says that of Westeros’s dragons “only Vhagar was older or larger.” This is the fictional chronicler’s account, rather than a measured statistic or an expert assessment of combat strength.
What is known about their age and riders?
Vermithor
Time’s 2022 guide and its 2024 explainer each describe Vermithor as about 100 years old in the Dance-era context. The figure is approximate, and the sources do not provide a directly comparable exact age for both dragons at the same point in time.

Vermithor was formerly ridden by Jaehaerys Targaryen, the Old King. That history explains the reference to him as the Old King’s mount, but it does not establish a measurable advantage in a later fight.
Vhagar
Vhagar’s long history includes being ridden by Aemond during the Dance. Her age and experience are part of her reputation, but the sources do not supply a matched age comparison or a score that translates rider history into dragon strength.

Would Vermithor or Vhagar win a fight?
The evidence does not determine a winner. Vhagar’s greater size is a relevant consideration, but size ranking alone cannot account for the circumstances of a hypothetical fight. A claim that one would certainly defeat the other would be a fan inference, not an established result.
The sources reviewed provide no controlled or quantified comparison of their fighting ability. Any prediction would need to state its assumptions—such as the dragons’ condition, riders, and circumstances—rather than presenting a guess as canon.

Are the book and television versions the same comparison?
Fire & Blood is the fictional history underlying the comparison; House of the Dragon is HBO’s adaptation of that book. Martin’s official publications page lists Fire & Blood, and his book page describes its Targaryen history, including the civil war that nearly tore the dynasty apart. HBO’s pressroom identifies the series as based on Fire & Blood.
The qualitative size ranking is described in secondary explainers about the story. Screen depictions can help viewers picture the dragons, but the cited sources do not establish a numerical size comparison from their on-screen proportions. Keep book statements and observations about the adaptation distinct.
