How Much RAM and CPU Does a Windows VPS Need for YouTube Loop Streaming?

A practical starting estimate for OBS loop streaming is 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM, but the right Windows VPS depends on the encoder, stream settings, scene and upload path.

For a simple prerecorded 1080p30 loop that OBS decodes and encodes, start by testing a Windows VPS with 4 vCPU and 8 GB of RAM. Treat that as a cautious estimate—not a guaranteed minimum or a tested VPS benchmark. OBS Project’s general Windows guidance recommends a quad-core CPU for 1080p streaming and 8 GB of RAM, but says actual CPU demand varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity.

Why 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM is a starting point, not a guarantee

OBS Project lists 4 GB RAM as its minimum and 8 GB as recommended. Its Windows download page lists a dual-core CPU as a minimum and a quad-core CPU as recommended for streaming at 1080p. Those are general OBS requirements, not specifications for a particular VPS or a promise that a given instance will run an unattended stream reliably.

OBS states that CPU requirements vary considerably with the chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. A loop with one video source and software encoding is a different workload from several concurrent streams with overlays, scaling and filters. A VPS can also have virtual CPUs that are shared or subject to provider limits, so the advertised vCPU count alone does not establish sustained performance.

Use a larger or more carefully tested instance when

  • You run more than one stream at the same time.
  • You use higher frame rates or resolutions, multiple sources, scaling, filters or animated overlays.
  • You encode with the CPU rather than a hardware encoder that OBS can actually access.
  • The VPS has limited or contended CPU allocation, or other software will run alongside OBS.

OBS’s 8 GB recommendation and 4 GB minimum make 8 GB the more sensible planning figure for an always-on Windows workload; the extra headroom is practical guidance, not a measured guarantee. If the VPS only relays an already encoded feed without re-encoding, its compute demand may be lower, but the available sources do not establish a specific VPS size for that case.

What to check before buying a Windows VPS

CPU and RAM figures do not prove that OBS can run with the encoder and graphics path you intend to use. OBS Project’s system requirements list Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU. A VPS plan described only by its virtual CPU and memory does not establish that those graphics requirements are met.

  • CPU allocation: Check whether the provider describes sustained CPU access or possible contention, not just the number of vCPUs.
  • Windows: Confirm the offered Windows image and licensing arrangements, and that the specific version meets OBS’s requirements.
  • Graphics and encoding: Ask whether a compatible graphics device and driver are available to the Windows instance. Do not assume a plan mentioning a GPU means OBS can use its hardware encoder.
  • Upload capacity: Check the usable outbound connection and whether it can sustain your stream bitrate. CPU upgrades will not fix an unstable or inadequate upload path.
  • Long-running sessions: Confirm that the provider supports the intended continuous workload and ask about relevant service limits.

These are buying checks, not endorsements of any provider. No specific VPS plan is established here as suitable.

Set the stream for YouTube, then size the VPS for the actual workload

YouTube ingest bitrate is a stream and network setting, not a way to calculate CPU or RAM. YouTube’s live encoder guidance, checked in 2026, lists H.264 rates of 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p60; the same guidance also gives 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60 as recommended rates. Consult YouTube’s current encoder table when configuring a stream, because platform guidance can change.

YouTube supports live ingest using RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Select settings that fit the actual upload connection; a higher bitrate does not make the video look better if the source or connection cannot support it.

A practical sizing and test sequence

  1. Choose the production workload: Decide the resolution, frame rate, OBS scene, audio, overlays and encoder you will use continuously. For a simple 1080p30 OBS encode, use 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM as the initial estimate.
  2. Verify the VPS graphics path: Confirm Windows and DirectX compatibility, then check from the actual instance whether OBS can use the intended hardware encoder. If it cannot, plan for CPU encoding instead.
  3. Configure YouTube ingest: Set the encoder, CBR, bitrate and keyframe interval for your selected resolution and frame rate. Check YouTube’s current live encoder table rather than assuming an ingest bitrate specifies VPS hardware.
  4. Run a representative test: Use the same video, audio, motion, overlays, resolution, frame rate and encoder as the planned loop. YouTube advises testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the intended stream.
  5. Check both ends: Watch OBS’s performance and YouTube’s stream health during the test. Look for dropped frames, encoding lag, unstable ingest or audio/video problems. A test that works briefly is useful evidence, but does not prove the VPS will remain trouble-free continuously.
  6. Adjust based on the failure: If encoding is overloaded, simplify the scene, reduce output demands or choose a VPS with more sustained CPU or usable hardware encoding. If ingest is unstable, investigate upload capacity and network stability rather than adding RAM.

Troubleshooting common sizing problems

Symptom Likely area to investigate Useful next step
OBS reports encoding lag or the stream stutters despite a stable connection. Encoder load, scene complexity, frame rate or resolution. Test the same scene with fewer sources or effects, verify which encoder OBS is using, and reassess sustained CPU capacity.
YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream drops frames on the way to YouTube. Outbound upload capacity or network stability. Check the VPS upload path and bitrate against YouTube’s current guidance; a CPU or RAM increase alone will not repair the connection.
The VPS lists a GPU, but OBS cannot select hardware encoding. Virtual graphics device, driver, or encoder access. Confirm access from the actual Windows instance with the provider; otherwise size and test for the encoder OBS can use.
One stream works, but adding another causes problems. Higher combined encoding, graphics or network load. Test all simultaneous streams together. Do not assume a single-stream test validates a multi-stream configuration.
OBS starts, but the system becomes unreliable when left running. Long-running workload, contention, other software, or provider limits. Test the complete unattended configuration and check the VPS provider’s sustained-use terms and resource allocation.
