At an illustrative electricity rate of $0.15 per kWh, that works out to roughly $8.94–$51.25 a year for the Mac alone. Your actual bill depends on the Mac’s workload, connected equipment and local electricity rate.
Estimated electricity use and cost
Apple reports 6.8 W at idle and 39 W at CPU maximum for a tested M1 Mac mini configuration with 16 GB of unified memory and a 2 TB SSD. These are published reference measurements, not readings taken while streaming a particular YouTube channel. Apple’s power-consumption table gives the figures.

The $0.15/kWh rate is an example used to show the calculation, not a universal electricity tariff. Replace it with your all-in price per kWh from your bill. If your utility uses time-of-use rates, calculate consumption and cost for each applicable time period.
Calculate your own estimate
- Find the Mac’s average power draw in watts while your stream is running. A plug-in electricity meter can measure the computer’s actual consumption at the outlet.
- Multiply watts by the hours it runs, then divide by 1,000 to get kilowatt-hours. For a full year: watts × 8,760 ÷ 1,000.
- Multiply the resulting kWh by your billed price per kWh. To estimate a month, use the hours in the period you want to price rather than assuming every month has the same length.
For example, the 6.8 W calculation is 6.8 × 8,760 ÷ 1,000 = 59.568 kWh a year; at $0.15/kWh, that is about $8.94. The 39 W calculation is 39 × 8,760 ÷ 1,000 = 341.64 kWh; at the same illustrative rate, that is about $51.25.

What the estimate includes—and what it does not
Streaming workload
The idle reading may understate power use during an active stream, while the CPU-maximum reading is not a prediction that streaming will hold the Mac at that load. Encoding settings, software and what else the computer is doing affect real draw. Neither published figure establishes the consumption of your exact setup.
Other equipment
The table estimates the Mac mini alone. A display, audio equipment, network hardware and other connected devices can add to the household’s total electricity use. Measure the full setup if you want to estimate that combined cost; do not add equipment to the Mac-only estimate without accounting for its separate draw.

The 150 W specification
Apple’s M1 Mac mini technical specifications list 150 W maximum continuous power. That is a product rating, not typical or expected streaming consumption. Apple’s separate power table reports 39 W CPU maximum for its tested configuration, so the 150 W rating should not be substituted for a measured workload in the cost calculation.
Power cost is only one part of keeping a stream live
The electricity estimate says nothing about whether a stream will stay connected. YouTube’s encoder instructions require the YouTube Live server URL and stream key to be entered in the encoder. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become enabled. YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days; check the current help page because platform requirements can change.

For network stability, YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total bitrate and accounting for primary and backup streams as applicable. The M1 Mac mini has Gigabit Ethernet, but that port specification does not establish the upload speed or reliability of your internet service. See YouTube’s streaming tips for its network guidance.
There is also an archiving limit to plan around: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous 24-hour feed will be saved as one automatically archived video. If keeping the full content matters, arrange separate recordings or another archive approach. YouTube’s encoder-stream instructions describe the archive guidance.
