Sometimes—but not with a guarantee of zero cost or uninterrupted service. A free-tier VPS can send prerecorded video to YouTube Live if your account, compute, storage, network transfer, and any other billable resources stay within the provider’s current free allowances. Those allowances are conditional, and free-tier terms do not promise that a VM will remain available nonstop. For a channel that must stay live, verify the exact account and region terms, calculate transfer from your outgoing bitrate, and test the real workload before relying on it.
What “free” does—and does not—cover
A VPS is only one part of the cost. A continuous stream can use compute to encode or relay video, storage for the source file, and outbound network transfer as the VM sends the feed to YouTube. Depending on the provider and account, other resources may also be billable. A free compute allowance does not by itself establish that storage and egress are free, or that the VM can sustain your encoder.
Free-tier rules differ by provider, account eligibility, region, and offer. Some offers are time-limited trials; others are ongoing allowances with usage limits. Exceeding an applicable limit can result in standard charges. Check the current terms for your exact account and product rather than treating “free tier” as a universal no-charge plan.
- Google Cloud’s Free Tier applies to participating products within specified monthly usage limits, calculated per billing account; usage over the limits is billed at standard rates. Google also reserves the right to change or eliminate limits with 30 days’ advance notice. The cited terms do not establish one universal Compute Engine configuration or outbound-transfer allowance for every region.
- AWS’s Free Tier FAQs distinguish a new-customer free plan or trial from Always Free services. Eligibility and included resources depend on the current offer and account plan, and exceeding free usage limits can lead to standard charges.
What Oracle’s Always Free terms mean for a 24/7 stream
Oracle’s current Always Free Resources page describes, for Always Free tenancies, an Ampere A1 allowance totaling 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory, 200 GB of block volume storage, and 10 TB per month of outbound data transfer. The resources are limited to the tenancy’s home region, and free shapes may not be available when you try to provision one.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That allowance is not an uptime promise. Oracle says it may reclaim idle Always Free compute instances if, over a seven-day period, CPU utilization at the 95th percentile, network utilization, and—on A1 instances—memory utilization are each below 20%. Whether a particular streaming workload avoids those criteria, encodes reliably, or meets a useful performance target depends on its configuration; the published limits do not establish performance for your stream.
Oracle also describes a separate $300 trial valid for up to 30 days alongside non-expiring Always Free offers. Its Free Tier page says an account remains active after the trial expires and provisioned Always Free resources are not interrupted solely because the trial ended, subject to eligibility and Always Free limits. Trial credits should not be mistaken for a permanent allowance.

Then convert the result into the units and billing period used by your provider. For example, at 4 Mbps for 30 days, the estimate is about 1.30 TB in decimal units, before protocol overhead and other traffic. This is arithmetic, not a provider-published benchmark. Actual usage can differ, and transfer direction and accounting rules vary; check the provider’s billing documentation to learn whether traffic sent to YouTube counts against the allowance.
Use the stream’s outgoing bitrate, not just the source file size. Add headroom for protocol overhead and any other outbound traffic, then compare the estimate with the allowance for the specific account and billing period. YouTube’s live ingestion traffic and traffic delivered by YouTube to viewers are distinct; the cited provider and encoder guidance does not provide a complete billing analysis for every network topology.

Configure and test the YouTube feed
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers stream ingestion, not VPS pricing or availability. It recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds, and supported video options including H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, with AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec; for H.264, examples include 4 Mbps for 240p–720p at 30 fps, 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. Check YouTube’s current table for your target rather than applying one figure to every stream.
- Confirm the account and region. In the cloud console, verify the exact free product, region, eligibility, storage, and network-transfer allowance. Check what happens after any trial ends and whether the particular outbound traffic is counted.
- Check ancillary charges and safeguards. Review possible charges for storage, IP addresses, snapshots, and other resources used by your setup. Set billing alerts or limits where available; an alert is not necessarily a hard spending cap.
- Test the actual encoder workload. Use the VM shape, software build, video, audio, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you intend to run. Available CPU and memory figures alone do not prove that an encoder can sustain that workload.
- Test YouTube ingestion. Configure the encoder for the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health.
- Plan for interruptions. Check the provider’s capacity and idle-instance policies, and decide how the stream will restart after a VM or connection failure. The cited free-tier terms do not promise nonstop availability.
- Monitor both sides. Watch cloud usage and billing as well as YouTube’s stream-health status. Recheck provider terms when offers or limits change; quotas and availability are account- and region-specific.
When a free VPS is—or is not—a sensible choice
A free VM may suit experimentation or a stream where an interruption or the possibility of charges is acceptable. It is a riskier foundation when the channel needs dependable continuous operation: free capacity may be unavailable, an eligible idle instance may be reclaimed, and the exact encoding workload has not been established by the published allowances.

Compare alternatives using the same stream workload. Check monthly outbound-transfer allowance and accounting, sustained compute performance for the VM architecture, storage for the video, account eligibility and post-trial billing, regional capacity, reclamation or suspension rules, and the monitoring, restart, and support options. Do not infer an uptime commitment from a free-tier label. If continuity matters, compare the current terms of a paid VM or a hosted streaming service before choosing.
