A 2019 Rutgers University account says his dental treatment addressed extra teeth and adult teeth that had not erupted, but it does not give a complete procedure timeline or explain changes in his appearance season by season.
What condition does Gaten Matarazzo have?
Matarazzo has cleidocranial dysplasia, a genetic condition that affects the development of the skull, face, teeth and other bones. Its dental effects can include extra teeth and delayed eruption, meaning some permanent teeth do not emerge on the usual timetable. The signs and needs vary from person to person. Rutgers’ 2019 account discusses Matarazzo’s experience growing up with CCD; Cleveland Clinic’s overview describes the condition and its broader effects.
Rutgers School of Dental Medicine dean Cecile A. Feldman recalled Matarazzo describing how he felt as a child: “He said it was strange. Especially when the show began, he was at an age when all the kids around him had all their teeth and he didn’t,” Feldman recalled. This is Feldman recounting his experience, not a direct quote from Matarazzo.
How did Gaten Matarazzo fix his teeth?
Rutgers reports that his treatment addressed supernumerary teeth—teeth in addition to the usual set—and adult teeth that had not emerged. Feldman also said Matarazzo had difficulty finding dentists familiar with CCD. She described him as an advocate for better knowledge of the condition: “He’s a very strong advocate for research in oral health so we can learn more about CCD and also ensure that dentists know how to treat it,” said Feldman.

The Rutgers account does not list every procedure, state how many operations he underwent, or date individual treatments. It also does not establish which dental changes correspond to particular Stranger Things seasons. Screen appearances are not a reliable basis for reconstructing a medical history, and the available account does not establish his current treatment status.

- Optimize your routine: EasyStart for a gradual, gentle increase in brushing power, SmarTimer informing when you've reached 2 minutes, and QuadPacer to brush each section of a mouth for 30 seconds
- Brush head replacement reminder tracks how often and how hard you brush, then notifies you when it's time to replace the brush head once it's time; dental professionals recommend changing your brush head regularly
- Assess tooth position and development. Careful orthodontic assessment helps clinicians determine which teeth are present, which have not erupted, and whether they can be guided into place.
- Address extra teeth when needed. Extra teeth may be removed if they interfere with the development or eruption of other teeth.
- Expose and guide viable unerupted teeth. In suitable cases, clinicians may uncover an unerupted tooth and use orthodontic treatment to guide it into the mouth. Whether this is appropriate depends on the individual case.
- Coordinate staged care. Treatment may combine surgery, orthodontics and, where needed, prosthodontics. Some patients may have prosthetic alternatives rather than a plan centered on bringing every unerupted tooth into position.
Johns Hopkins Medicine describes these kinds of dental options in general terms. A 2017 case series indexed by PubMed reports that oral rehabilitation can require multidisciplinary, staged care. A 2026 modified Delphi expert panel publication reports consensus on 37 standards-of-care recommendations across diagnosis and management, including a phased approach to exposing unerupted teeth. That figure counts recommendations, not treatments received by Matarazzo; expert consensus informs care but does not mean every recommendation applies to every patient.
