Spoilers for Constellation season 1, episode 6, “Paul Is Dead.” Paul returns to Earth after the ISS disaster, but the world he finds is not the one he remembers: the CAL is missing, and Henry’s history is different. He confronts the man he knows as Henry—Bud Caldera—and Bud shoots at him. The episode leaves Paul’s fate unresolved. Its final scene, meanwhile, shows Alice seeing Jo outside the cabin.

What happens to Paul in episode 6?

“Paul Is Dead” retells the ISS collision from a reality in which Jo is fatally injured and Paul survives. Paul tries to stop Jo’s bleeding after the impact, then returns to Earth carrying memories that do not fit the world around him. His crewmates do not recognize the NASA experiment he remembers, and he cannot find the CAL.

Paul also experiences brief impressions of Jo alive, including while he is holding her injured hand. Later, when he visits a tree planted in her memory, he sees her again. These moments unsettle the apparent reality of Jo’s death, but the episode does not offer a precise explanation for how he perceives her.

Why does Paul think he is in the wrong world?

The CAL is missing

Paul remembers working on the CAL, but the people around him do not know the experiment. Michaela tells him Henry does not work at NASA and that she knows nothing about the CAL. Its absence is one of several concrete signs that Paul’s memories belong to a different version of events.

His family and Apollo 18 history are different

When Paul calls his wife, Frida, she corrects him: her name is Erica. He then watches material about Apollo 18 and learns that, in this world’s account, Henry was the only astronaut to return. Paul remembers a different history in which Henry survived after repairing damage. The disagreement is not just about a missing project; the people and events Paul remembers do not match this world.

What happens when Paul confronts Bud?

Paul visits Bud Caldera, the man he recognizes as Henry, and presses him about their conflicting memories. Bud says two Apollo 18 crewmates died in his version of events and that he was the sole survivor. Paul remembers events differently. Bud orders him to leave; Paul refuses, and Bud shoots at him.

The episode does not establish whether the shot kills Paul. The careful answer to “Did Bud kill Paul?” is that Bud fires at him, but Paul’s fate remains unresolved at the end of episode 6. The title, “Paul Is Dead,” is a Beatles-conspiracy allusion noted in TV Guide’s commentary; it is a thematic joke, not confirmation of what happens to Paul.

Why does Alice see Jo at the cabin?

After the confrontation, the episode returns to Alice and Magnus as they travel to Jo’s cabin. Alice sees Jo arrive outside. Earlier, at Jo’s funeral, Alice calls for her mother; the recap describes Paul and Alice noticing one another in a cross-reality moment, while Jo and Magnus respond to Alice in the other reality. The scenes connect the characters’ experiences without spelling out a mechanism for that contact.

How to read the ending

The episode’s events support the idea that it is showing a parallel version of the accident: here, Jo dies and Paul returns, while earlier episodes followed the reality in which Paul dies and Jo comes back. TV Guide interprets the structure as the surviving versions of Jo and Paul having swapped universes. That is a reading of the story, not an explanation stated by the episode or a confirmed scientific account.

The changed Apollo 18 history, absent CAL, and glimpses of Jo give Paul’s and Jo’s experiences a connection across incompatible realities. The episode makes that connection visible while leaving both its mechanics and Paul’s immediate fate open.
