HBO said the first episode eventually drew more than 20 million U.S. viewers across platforms; season two’s premiere drew 7.8 million on premiere night. Rotten Tomatoes’ critic scores are a separate measure of reception.
How many people watched House of the Dragon?
The figures most often cited describe different events and counting windows. HBO’s August 2022 release called the series debut the largest audience for a new original series in the network’s history. Five days after its U.S. premiere, HBO said the first episode had been seen by more than 20 million U.S. viewers across linear television, On Demand and HBO Max, combining Nielsen and first-party data. That cumulative total is not a premiere-night-only count. HBO’s announcement gives the platform mix and methodology.
| Event | Reported audience | What the figure covers |
|---|---|---|
| Season one, episode one (August 2022) | More than 20 million | Cumulative U.S. viewing across linear, On Demand and HBO Max, based on Nielsen and HBO first-party data; not premiere night alone. HBO, August 26, 2022 |
| Season one finale (October 23, 2022) | 9.3 million | Viewers across platforms for the finale, using Nielsen and company first-party data. HBO, October 2022 |
| Season two premiere (June 16, 2024) | 7.8 million | U.S. viewers across HBO and Max on premiere night, according to Nielsen and Warner Bros. Discovery viewing figures reported by TheWrap. The report described this as about 22% below the season-one launch figure. TheWrap, June 2024 |
What do the season-one and season-two numbers show?
They establish that the first episode became an exceptionally large HBO launch and that the season-one finale and season-two premiere each attracted substantial cross-platform audiences. They do not establish a precise season-to-season decline or growth rate. The 20-million-plus figure is a cumulative total for the first episode, while the 9.3-million finale and 7.8-million season-two premiere are event figures with different dates and viewing windows.
A fair comparison would require equivalent measures: the same kind of episode or season average, geography, platform coverage, viewing period and data method. The figures above do not provide matched season-wide averages, so they should not be presented as proof that overall season-two viewership fell by a particular amount.

What are House of the Dragon’s Rotten Tomatoes scores?
At the time checked in 2026, Rotten Tomatoes listed season one at 90% and season two at 84% on its Tomatometer. Those percentages represent the share of counted critic reviews classified as positive. They are not viewer counts, average ratings, or the percentage of all viewers who liked a season. The scores can change as reviews are added or classifications are updated.

- Season two: 84% Tomatometer (accessed 2026).
Why audience figures and critic scores should stay separate
Viewership measures how many people watched under a stated counting method; the Tomatometer summarizes critic-review sentiment. Neither can stand in for the other. A lower critic percentage does not show that fewer people watched, and a large audience does not by itself establish favorable reviews or viewer satisfaction.
House of the Dragon is based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, a companion history of the Targaryen dynasty. Readers interested in the source material can start there, while keeping in mind that an adaptation need not reproduce every book detail. HBO’s series description identifies the book as the source: HBO, August 2022.
