Hotstar is not currently a standalone U.S. streaming service, and Disney+ in the United States is not a complete replacement for Disney+ Hotstar in India or other Asian markets. Disney reorganized the former U.S. Hotstar offering across Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN services. As a result, a Disney+ subscription may provide some related entertainment, but it does not guarantee Hotstar’s Indian films, regional-language serials, originals, cricket, or local-market release schedule.
The short answer
If you remember Hotstar as a major Indian streaming service, the U.S. comparison needs correcting: there are not two active U.S. services with equivalent catalogs. The current Disney structure in the United States is built around Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN services. Disney+ Hotstar remains a market-specific brand used in India and certain Southeast Asian markets, while India later moved to the JioHotstar brand.

Disney shifted much of the former U.S. Hotstar general-entertainment offering toward Hulu and directed sports rights toward ESPN services. It did not move the entire Hotstar experience into Disney+.

- A title available on Hotstar or JioHotstar in India will be available on Disney+ U.S.
- A Disney+ subscription includes the full Hulu catalog or every ESPN event.
- Disney+ U.S. includes Indian Premier League coverage or all other cricket historically associated with Hotstar.
- Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, or other language tracks are available for every title.
Hotstar, Disney+ Hotstar, JioHotstar, and Disney+ are not the same service
Streaming catalogs are controlled by territory. Disney’s availability guidance says that content differs by country and region, so the name of a service does not establish that its catalog is identical worldwide.

That is why “Disney+ Hotstar became Disney+” is misleading when applied to the United States. The U.S. service structure and rights agreements are different.
What happened to Hotstar content in the United States?
Disney reorganized rather than wholesale-transferred the U.S. Hotstar catalog. The broad pattern was:
- General entertainment: much of the U.S. offering was directed toward Hulu.
- Sports: sports rights were directed toward ESPN services.
- Disney+: received selected content and operates as a Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic service—not as a dedicated Hotstar replacement.
Individual programs can follow different paths. A title may move to Hulu, remain available only in an international market, leave the U.S. catalog when a license expires, or appear temporarily under a different Disney-owned service. The former Hotstar library therefore cannot be treated as one permanent collection.

What Disney+ U.S. actually includes
Disney+ U.S. is primarily built around Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic programming. Depending on the plan or bundle, subscribers may also see selected Hulu and ESPN material. Disney’s U.S. service page is the best place to check the current offering.
The important distinction is between having several services under one bill and having one complete catalog inside the Disney+ app. Disney says selected Hulu content can be available within Disney+, while additional Hulu programming requires the Hulu app. ESPN access is also dependent on the specific plan and the event’s rights.
Standalone Disney+ plans
Prices observed on August 16–18, 2026, were:

Both plans advertise up to 4K UHD/HDR subject to the title, device, and internet connection. Advertisements may still appear in selected live or linear programming. These are U.S. plans, require the subscriber to be at least 18, and may change; confirm current terms on Disney’s pricing page.

What is missing compared with Hotstar or JioHotstar?
Indian films and television
Disney+ U.S. is not a comprehensive Indian-content service. It may carry selected Indian films or series through licensing and Disney-owned distribution, but it does not promise the breadth of the Hotstar or JioHotstar catalog.
There is no reliable permanent list of “missing titles” because U.S. rights change. A program available in India may be absent in the United States, assigned to Hulu, licensed to another service, delayed, or removed after its rights expire.
Hotstar Specials and other originals
The Hotstar brand became associated with locally produced and commissioned series, including Hotstar Specials. A U.S. Disney+ account should not be assumed to include every Hotstar Original.
Some Hotstar-originated programs may be available on Hulu or another U.S. distributor; others may not be licensed in the country. Even when a program is available, its subtitles, dubs, artwork, episode count, or release timing can differ.
Cricket and live sports
Cricket is often the biggest practical difference. Hotstar in India became strongly associated with major cricket and other live sports. Disney’s U.S. strategy placed sports with ESPN services rather than Disney+ alone.
That does not mean an ESPN-inclusive bundle reproduces India’s Hotstar sports package. Rights are specific to the tournament, season, country, and plan. Check the current ESPN schedule and plan details before subscribing. Do not assume that an ESPN hub or bundle includes every Indian cricket event historically shown on Hotstar.
Regional languages
Language availability is title-specific. The U.S. service may differ from an Indian service in:

- Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, or other audio tracks;
- subtitle languages;
- dubbed versions;
- episode-by-episode availability; and
- whether a language option exists in Disney+, Hulu, ESPN, or only in an international service.
An app’s interface language does not prove that a particular show has that language’s audio or subtitles. Check the program’s audio and subtitle menu.

Release timing and local rights
A series can premiere in India on Hotstar or JioHotstar and arrive later—or not at all—in the United States. U.S. licensing, existing broadcast agreements, ratings, edits, sports rights, and the service assigned to the title all affect timing.
Is Hulu the U.S. replacement for Hotstar?
Partly, but not completely. Hulu is the more relevant Disney-owned U.S. destination for selected former Hotstar general-entertainment programming and offers a broader U.S. general-entertainment catalog than Disney+ alone.
Hulu is not identical to Hotstar’s Indian catalog. Some content appears only in the Hulu app, some titles may be unavailable in the U.S., and licensing can change. A Disney+/Hulu bundle improves access to Disney-owned entertainment, but it is not a one-app replacement for Hotstar’s Indian shows, regional-language depth, or cricket offering.

Which Disney plan makes sense?
Choose Disney+ alone if you mainly want Disney franchises
Disney+ is the straightforward choice for Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, and family-oriented viewing. Do not buy it expecting the full Indian Hotstar/JioHotstar library.

Consider Disney+ and Hulu if entertainment is the priority
For viewers who want Disney franchises plus selected former Hotstar entertainment and broader U.S. programming, a Disney+/Hulu bundle is more suitable than Disney+ alone. Prices observed on August 16–18, 2026, included a $19.99 monthly Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN Select bundle and a $29.99 monthly Premium version. Confirm the exact current offer before subscribing.
Consider an ESPN-inclusive bundle only after checking the event
The observed Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN Unlimited prices were $35.99 per month, or $44.99 per month for the Premium version. These may suit a sports-heavy household, but the correct test is the specific tournament or match you want—not the bundle name. Promotions, legacy plans, billing arrangements, and future renewals can differ.

Can a U.S. viewer use an Indian Hotstar or JioHotstar subscription?
Do not assume that an account purchased in India will work normally in the United States. International streaming subscriptions are country-specific: payment methods, app availability, terms, geographic restrictions, and catalogs can all differ.
Disney says that travelers can stream content available in the country or region where they are located. A VPN is not a dependable or necessarily permitted solution, and it does not resolve payment, licensing, or account restrictions. Use services officially available to U.S. residents and check their terms.

- Search for the exact show, season, movie, or tournament in the U.S. service.
- Confirm that the result has a playable episode or event—not merely a trailer or promotional page.
- Check the service label: Disney+, Hulu, or ESPN.
- Open the audio and subtitle menu and verify the language you need.
- Check every season or episode, since availability may be incomplete.
- For sports, verify the date, tournament, live/on-demand status, and required plan.
A search result can remain visible even when a title is unavailable, assigned to another app, limited to another country, or no longer licensed. The play button and current plan requirements matter more than a search-engine listing.

Only qualifying bundles provide Hulu access, and selected Hulu content may appear inside Disney+. Additional Hulu programming can require the Hulu app.
Do I need ESPN separately?
That depends on the bundle and the event. Check the specific ESPN plan and current rights for the sport or tournament you want.
Why can I find a title but not play it?
The listing may be a trailer, an unavailable-country result, a Hulu- or ESPN-only title, an incomplete listing, or a program whose rights have expired. Confirm the play button, season list, service label, and plan.
