If you mean films whose stories actually unfold on October 31—not simply movies with an autumn mood—the strongest verified picks here are Halloween (1978) and Trick ‘r Treat (2007). They offer sharply different Halloween-night horror: a focused pursuit slasher and an anthology built around the holiday’s customs. The broader 13-film premise cannot be supported without stretching the definition, so this guide sticks to the two films whose Halloween-night settings are established by primary sources.
How to choose a Halloween-night horror movie
“Set on Halloween night” is narrower than “on or around Halloween.” A film may be ideal October viewing yet spend most of its story elsewhere. The picks below meet a stricter test: the story is explicitly framed around Halloween night or the night’s trick-or-treat period.
- How much of the story takes place that night: Both films are explicitly tied to Halloween night in the cited descriptions.
- Subgenre: Choose a pursuit-driven slasher for a single escalating threat, or an anthology for several connected stories.
- Holiday customs: Trick ‘r Treat makes Halloween rituals central; Halloween uses the familiar backdrop of tricks, treats, and a masked killer.
- Group-watch fit: The anthology structure of Trick ‘r Treat offers natural story breaks; Halloween sustains one continuous slasher narrative. Both are horror films, so suitability depends on the group’s comfort with the genre.
The order below is an editorial recommendation, not a universal ranking.
1. Halloween (1978): the classic pursuit slasher
John Carpenter’s Halloween is the natural starting point for a Halloween-night double feature: a masked killer returns to Haddonfield, putting Laurie Strode and other young women in danger. The American Film Institute catalog identifies the film as an R-rated horror movie, released October 27, 1978, with a runtime of 93 minutes. AFI Catalog

There is an important date wrinkle. The official synopsis says Michael Myers escapes and returns to Haddonfield on the night of October 30, 1978—not October 31—while describing the night as turning tricks and treats sinister. Official film synopsis That makes the film a close Halloween-night fit in its own stated chronology, but the date should not be silently changed to Halloween proper.
Pick it for a lean, continuous slasher story rather than a collection of holiday vignettes.

2. Trick ‘r Treat (2007): interconnected Halloween stories
For a film that leans more directly into Halloween-night traditions, Trick ‘r Treat is the stronger match. Rather than following one protagonist through a single plot, it links four stories set on Halloween night. Fathom and Legendary describe the film’s stories as taking place that night. The strands involve a murderous high-school principal, a young woman looking for a partner, the consequences of ignoring holiday rituals, and an old man’s confrontation with Sam. That structure gives the movie room to explore different kinds of Halloween horror, with customs and ritual woven into the premise rather than serving only as scenery.

The title promises 13 movies, but a credible recommendation list needs more than seasonal association. A film that is set in autumn, released near Halloween, or often watched in October does not automatically qualify as a story that takes place on Halloween night. The available evidence establishes these two films; it does not verify eleven more to the same standard. Naming other commonly suggested titles as confirmed picks would blur the distinction this guide is meant to make.

For a quick choice, start with Halloween for the foundational slasher approach, or Trick ‘r Treat for connected stories rooted in Halloween-night ritual.
