The Halloween-set case is entertaining, but the episode’s more consequential turn may be Morgan Gillory and Captain Nick Wagner’s unusually personal exchange. “Chasing Ghosts” makes a romance between them plausible without making it official—and the difference matters when Nick is Morgan’s boss.
What happens in “Chasing Ghosts”?
A wealthy lawyer is found dead in a haunted Victorian mansion, where the apparent supernatural spectacle gives the LAPD a theatrical murder puzzle to untangle. The episode uses the haunting as misdirection: behind the eerie atmosphere is a human crime. ABC lists the installment as Season 2, Episode 6, which aired October 21, 2025; Rotten Tomatoes categorizes the series as comedy, drama, and crime and lists the episode as TV-14. Case spoilers: The mystery leans into a hired “gig ghost,” a concealed room, a valuable necklace, and poisoning before revealing Calliope as the culprit. Those turns make the procedural plot playful and twist-heavy, though the haunted-house setup is more a lively frame for the investigation than a deeply unsettling story. Absolute Geeks’ episode review details the case.
Is Morgan and Wagner flirting?
Yes—the episode gives Morgan and Nick a notably personal, teasing conversation. They joke about his shaved mustache, then talk about marriage, Morgan’s relationship history, and Nick’s late fiancée. TVLine describes the exchange as flirtatious; Morgan tells him, “My brain has a way of making sure relationships don’t last very long, so let’s just leave it at that.” That is meaningful chemistry, but it is not a relationship announcement. Showrunner Todd Harthan has also acknowledged the possibility while emphasizing its complications: “If that is going to happen, it’s going to be tricky, laced with landmines. But unexpected chemistry is interesting to me. … I think the seeds of that are something we’re talking about and are worth exploring.” The quoted wording comes from TVLine’s October 22, 2025 report.
Why the romance setup worries me
The complication is built into the workplace: Wagner is Morgan’s captain. Morgan has a history of pushing against authority, so a relationship with someone in her chain of command could either sharpen that tension or undermine her independence. The show will need to preserve her agency rather than make professional power imbalance feel like a shortcut to romantic suspense.

Nick’s mystery adds another layer. Viewers can reasonably wonder how much to trust him, but suspicion is not proof that he has harmful motives; Episode 6 does not settle that question. The flirtation is most compelling if the series treats trust as something Morgan evaluates for herself, not as a secret the audience is simply waiting to have exposed.
Critics are divided in a useful way. Tell-Tale TV’s Jerrica Tisdale is more convinced a romance is brewing but unsure how she feels about it. Fangirlish’s Raquel Morales notes the personal conversation while saying she still does not trust Nick. Absolute Geeks’ Maya A. finds the slow-burn possibility both intriguing and anxiety-inducing. Their reactions capture the episode’s central trade-off: unexpected chemistry can be fun, but the power dynamic gives it real stakes. Tell-Tale TV · Fangirlish · Absolute Geeks.

Morgan and Ava’s story gives the episode its emotional counterweight
A separate thread brings Morgan and Ava back toward understanding. With Elliott mediating, they talk, rebuild trust, and revisit Morgan’s investigation into Roman’s disappearance. That reconciliation gives the episode an emotional payoff independent of the Nick flirtation—and grounds the hour in Morgan’s family life rather than letting the new romantic possibility take over.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does “Chasing Ghosts” work as an episode?
Mostly. The haunted mansion supplies a vivid, Halloween-ready setting, and the concealed-room and poisoning turns keep the case moving. The romantic scene is a stronger hook for the season ahead than a declaration would have been: it raises a question without answering it. But the episode’s best balance comes from keeping that question alongside, rather than above, Morgan’s complicated family ties and unresolved search for Roman.
Rank #4
Across their reviews, Tell-Tale TV, Fangirlish, and Absolute Geeks describe an entertaining installment while differing on how welcome its romantic and character developments feel. That range fits “Chasing Ghosts”: a fun procedural with a promising spark that will need careful handling if the series wants the tension to feel earned rather than troubling.
