Major spoilers for Ari Aster’s Hereditary (2018). Peter becomes the male vessel the cult has been preparing for, and Joan’s coronation confirms that Paimon’s ritual has succeeded. The ending is supernatural within the film, but it is also a tragedy about grief and trauma. Aster has said viewers should take events literally first and understand them as metaphor too.

What happens at the end of Hereditary?

After Annie and Steve die, Peter flees the house and climbs into the treehouse. Annie’s body rises into the treehouse, where Joan and the cult are waiting. Joan crowns Peter and hails him as Paimon. The final scene reveals that the family’s terrible losses were not random in the film’s supernatural plot: they helped clear the way for Paimon to inhabit the body the cult wanted.

Writer-director Ari Aster rejected the idea that the ending is only a dream or delusion. In a 2018 GameSpot interview, he said, “It is literal.” That does not rule out metaphor. In an interview with Eiga Hiho, Aster said, “I want people to take what happens in the movie literally first. At the same time, I want them to understand it as a metaphor.”

Why was Peter chosen as a vessel for Paimon?

1. The cult needs a male host

Joan’s explanation makes the cult’s aim explicit: it has been seeking a suitable male body for Paimon, and Peter is the intended host. The film’s supernatural rules—not a real-world claim about demons—explain why the cult’s plan converges on him.

2. Charlie is part of the plan

Charlie is not simply an unrelated victim whose death happens to set the plot in motion. Interviews with actors Alex Wolff and Milly Shapiro, reported by GameSpot, describe Charlie as Paimon’s manifestation from birth. In this reading, Charlie’s presence in the family is an early stage of the cult’s plan, while Peter is the male vessel it ultimately seeks.

3. Joan’s speech explains the convergence

Joan’s words at the end provide context the family never had. Her crowning of Peter and explanation of the search for a vessel connect the cult, Charlie, and the family’s escalating misfortunes. The moment is an unveiling of the plan, not evidence that Peter freely chose it.

What clues show that the ritual was planned?

4. The symbol is on the utility pole

The emblem carved into the pole Charlie’s car strikes is easy to overlook during the shock of her death. Aster confirmed that it was placed there as part of the plan and that events had been arranged in advance. That confirmation changes the pole from a random detail into evidence that the cult’s influence predates the final ritual.

5. The emblem recurs around the family

The same symbol appears on the pendant and in other places around the Graham home. Vanity Fair’s ending explainer connects those appearances to the occult plan. Their repetition rewards a rewatch: the cult’s presence is woven into the setting before Joan explains what is happening.

How does the film foreshadow sacrifice and inheritance?

6. The classroom lesson invokes Iphigenia

In Peter’s classroom, a lesson about Greek tragedy refers to Iphigenia, the daughter Agamemnon sacrifices. Aster confirmed the allusion in the Eiga Hiho interview. It foreshadows the film’s pattern of family members being caught in a larger plan, though the reference is a thematic echo rather than a literal explanation of Paimon’s ritual.

7. “Hereditary” points to spiritual and family inheritance

Aster has described the title as referring to both spiritual and genetic inheritance. The family’s occult history is one inheritance; Annie’s fear that mental illness may run in her family is another. The film places those fears beside each other, but its supernatural explanation should not be treated as evidence about real mental illness.

Is the ending a supernatural event or a metaphor for trauma?

It is both, according to Aster’s stated approach. On the plot level, Paimon’s plan succeeds and Peter is taken over. On the emotional level, the ending shows a young person transformed by unbearable loss and circumstances beyond his control. Aster told GameSpot, “For me, that ending is very much about how trauma can completely transform a person, and not necessarily for the better.”

That metaphor does not need to cancel the literal events. The horror is sharper because the film presents Peter’s collapse as both a family tragedy and the completion of the cult’s ritual.

Why is the final crowning a victory and a tragedy?

8. The cult gets what it wanted

Joan’s crown and welcome mark success for the cult. Aster described the ending as happy for cult members Ellen and Joan: their long effort has delivered the vessel they sought.

9. Peter loses control of his life

The same scene is a tragedy for Peter. Aster called it “a tragedy for Peter” because he is being taken over by Charlie, while it is happy for the cult. The ceremony’s calm, celebratory tone makes the imbalance especially stark: the cult sees a triumph where Peter’s agency has disappeared.
