That character work is the episode’s strongest thread; the murder investigation offers an engaging procedural frame, though its killer reveal lands less sharply.
Why Morgan and Karadec’s scene matters
The episode’s most satisfying development is not a declaration or a dramatic change in status. It is the added ease and emotional attentiveness between Morgan and Karadec as they work together. Their dynamic feels more openly playful, but the scene also makes their partnership feel more reciprocal: the push-and-pull is not just banter, but part of how they read and respond to one another.

That distinction matters. The episode gives viewers reason to notice flirtatious subtext, not proof that the characters are now a couple. A contemporaneous Fangirlish review captures the appeal of the moment while keeping the relationship grounded: “This platonic dynamic between them is part of what we’ve been missing in the previous three episodes, and it’s finally here.” The scene works because it deepens their connection without needing to settle what that connection will become.
Spoilers: the two cases and the arrest
A woman’s 911 call brings Morgan and Karadec to Raina Viera, who says she did not make it. Raina is later found dead, and the investigation links her murder to the decades-old killing of singer Greta St. John. Morgan uses clues including photographs and a bloodstained dress to reconstruct the earlier crime, giving the episode a case that reaches beyond the present-day investigation.
#1 Best Overall
Lucy is arrested for Raina’s death, while Mac is implicated in Greta’s murder. During the pursuit, Karadec shoots Mac. The event gives the procedural outcome a personal cost for Karadec and the team, rather than letting the case conclude as a neat puzzle-solving exercise.
How well the mystery works
The past-and-present structure gives Morgan a chance to connect details across time, and the singer’s story lends the investigation a distinct atmosphere. But the case is less persuasive at the moment of revelation than it is while Morgan is piecing it together. Rotten Tomatoes’ episode page aggregates two critic reviews, whose excerpts include both praise for the relationship development and criticism of a predictable killer reveal and clunky subplots. That is a small sample, not a broad critical consensus, but it reflects the episode’s uneven balance: the solving process is more compelling than the final surprise.
Rank #2
Selena’s setback changes the team’s landscape
Alongside the murders, the episode advances Selena Soto’s leadership story. She learns she has not been selected as captain, and Nick Wagner arrives in the role. That shift gives the episode a consequence beyond its case of the week: the team’s internal structure is changing, and Selena has to absorb a professional disappointment while continuing to be part of the group.
