Here’s Why Craig Ferguson Really Left ‘The Late Late Show’

Craig Ferguson’s departure from The Late Late Show was a voluntary, timing-based exit—not a firing or a proven reaction to Stephen Colbert replacing David Letterman.

Craig Ferguson left The Late Late Show voluntarily in December 2014, when his contract was ending, because he wanted to step away from the daily routine before he stopped enjoying it. The timing made the decision look like a reaction to David Letterman’s retirement and CBS’s choice of Stephen Colbert as Letterman’s successor. Ferguson, however, said he had been considering his departure independently and denied that CBS had pushed him out.

Ferguson announced the decision himself in April 2014

On April 28, 2014, Craig Ferguson announced that he would leave The Late Late Show at the end of that year. CBS’s announcement described the move as Ferguson’s decision after roughly a decade as host, and the planned exit was set for December.

That timing matters. Ferguson was not abruptly removed from the program, and the contemporaneous account did not describe a firing, cancellation, or single-incident rupture. In the monologue surrounding his announcement, he directly addressed the speculation about CBS and made clear that leaving was his choice rather than something the network was imposing on him.

His explanation was also notably personal: he wanted to leave while he still enjoyed making the show. After nearly ten years of producing a daily late-night program, Ferguson appeared to view an orderly departure as preferable to waiting until the format became exhausting or creatively unfulfilling.

Why everyone connected the exit to Letterman and Colbert

The announcement arrived during a major CBS late-night transition. David Letterman had announced his retirement from The Late Show, and CBS later selected Stephen Colbert to succeed him. Ferguson, then hosting the network’s 12:30 a.m. program, was widely discussed as a possible candidate for the earlier and more prestigious slot.

That made the situation easy to interpret as a professional snub: perhaps Ferguson had wanted Letterman’s job, lost it to Colbert, and decided to leave CBS. There was also contemporary reporting about contractual protections connected with the 11:30 p.m. franchise and a possible payout if CBS assigned The Late Show to another host.

But the evidence does not establish that Ferguson left because CBS chose Colbert. In interviews around the announcement, Ferguson said his plans predated Letterman’s retirement announcement. He specifically rejected the idea that his departure was a reaction to Colbert being selected.

The careful conclusion is that the succession was an important backdrop, not the documented cause. It may have changed the business context surrounding Ferguson’s contract, but Ferguson’s stated reason was that he wanted to stop doing the daily show before he stopped enjoying it.

What happened with Ferguson’s contract?

CBS announced in April 2012 that Ferguson had extended his contract through 2014. When his departure was announced two years later, the timing was consistent with the end of that arrangement. Contemporary coverage described the exit as occurring when the contract expired or reached its end-of-term period.

Ferguson had reportedly been willing to leave earlier but agreed to remain through December. That gave CBS time to identify a successor and organize a less disruptive handover. In other words, the December date appears to have worked for both sides: Ferguson received a defined endpoint, while CBS avoided an immediate vacancy.

Some reports discussed a precise financial payment that Ferguson might have received if CBS gave The Late Show to another host. Those reports should be treated cautiously. The existence of a CBS contract and its extension through 2014 are well-supported; the exact payout figure was reported as a contractual provision, not demonstrated through a publicly available primary contract document. It is therefore misleading to present a particular dollar amount as proven fact.

He did not seem to want the earlier late-night slot

Ferguson’s later comments offer an important clue about why the Letterman succession was probably not the central issue. In a 2016 interview with the Los Angeles Times, he said he had never wanted the 12:30 slot, much less the earlier 11:30 slot.

That does not mean the opportunity had no professional value, or that Ferguson could not have been considered for it. It means that moving into the earlier franchise was not necessarily his ambition. The demanding daily schedule was part of the problem itself, regardless of which time the show aired.

His comments after leaving were consistent with that interpretation. A 2015 interview described his first year away from the program as a relief and emphasized the freedom that came from no longer living according to the daily late-night production cycle. His 2016 remarks likewise focused on the change in his life after leaving the routine.

Those retrospective interviews should not replace the explanation he gave in April 2014. They do, however, reinforce it: Ferguson wanted freedom from the structure of daily late night, not simply revenge for losing a promotion.

Was the show failing in the ratings?

There is no strong basis for saying that Ferguson left because The Late Late Show was a ratings failure. Contemporary reporting described the program as having meaningful franchise performance and, at points, its best ratings in the history of the Late Late Show brand.

That performance helps explain why fans found the departure surprising. Ferguson’s version of the program had developed a distinctive identity rather than functioning as a disposable overnight placeholder. It combined unusual comedy, interviews that often felt less scripted, heartfelt monologues, and remote broadcasts. Ferguson’s interview with Archbishop Desmond Tutu also earned the program a Peabody Award.

Those achievements demonstrate why CBS valued the show and why viewers regarded Ferguson’s exit as a loss. They do not prove that the network forced him out, nor do they eliminate the possibility that Ferguson simply no longer wanted the job. Creative success and personal exhaustion can exist at the same time.

Ten years of a daily show had taken its toll

The most defensible explanation is cumulative. Ferguson had spent approximately a decade hosting a demanding daily program. Even a successful show requires constant preparation, writing, rehearsals, interviews, production decisions, promotion, and the pressure of repeating the cycle the next day.

For Ferguson, the format also came with an unusual tension. He had built a show that could feel spontaneous and emotionally unpredictable, but maintaining that apparent looseness still required sustained work. The more distinctive the program became, the harder it could be to treat the job as a routine performance.

His own words point toward a timing-based exit: leave while the work remains enjoyable, rather than wait for fatigue or resentment to make the decision for him. That is a very different story from being fired after a scandal, losing an audience, or walking away solely because another host received the 11:30 job.

When was Ferguson’s final episode?

Craig Ferguson’s final episode as host aired on December 19, 2014. Jay Leno was the featured guest. The finale marked the end of Ferguson’s approximately ten-year run, which began in 2005 after he succeeded Craig Kilborn.

CBS then continued the franchise with James Corden. The Late Late Show with James Corden began in 2015, confirming that Ferguson’s departure was part of a broader CBS late-night transition rather than the end of the program itself.

What did Craig Ferguson do after leaving?

Leaving the nightly program did not mean leaving entertainment. Ferguson went on to host Celebrity Name Game, present the History series Join or Die with Craig Ferguson, continue performing stand-up, and work on books and audio projects.

Those projects support the idea that “moving on to other work” was a meaningful part of the transition. They should not, however, be retroactively described as one fully announced master plan unless a particular source says so. The evidence is stronger for a desire to escape the daily late-night routine than for a single replacement career that had already been arranged in April 2014.

Readers interested in the broader path behind Ferguson’s television career may want to explore Craig Ferguson’s memoir, American on Purpose: The Improbable Adventures of an Unlikely Patriot. It offers biographical context about his journey from Scotland through comedy and Hollywood to American television, but it should be read as background—not as definitive proof of the precise reasons for his 2014 decision.

The bottom line

Craig Ferguson did not leave The Late Late Show because the program collapsed, because CBS publicly fired him, or because Ferguson definitively lost a battle with Stephen Colbert. The available contemporaneous evidence points to a voluntary, carefully timed exit at the end of his contract.

The Letterman succession made the timing look suspicious, and contract reports added fuel to the speculation. But Ferguson’s own explanation remained consistent: after nearly ten years, he wanted to leave the daily show while he still enjoyed it. CBS used the remaining months to prepare for James Corden, and Ferguson moved on to other television, comedy, and writing projects.
