If HBO Max will not play any show or movie, the fastest way to find the cause is to run two tests: try a different title, then try HBO Max on another supported device or browser using the same network. Those results quickly separate a title problem, device problem, browser issue, network failure, account/session problem, and possible HBO Max-side incident.
Work through the steps below in order. Start with the low-cost checks before clearing data or reinstalling the app.
Start with these two tests
- Play a different show or movie. If only one title refuses to start, the problem may be limited to that title’s availability or playback data. Note the title and any message or error code, then contact HBO Max support rather than assuming the entire service is broken.
- Try HBO Max on another supported device or browser on the same network. For example, if the TV app fails, try a phone, tablet, computer, or another supported streaming player while connected to the same Wi-Fi. If playback works elsewhere, focus on the original device. If everything fails, continue with the network and account checks.

- Force-close HBO Max. Do not just return to the home screen. Close the app from the device’s recent-apps or app-management screen, then open it again.
- Update HBO Max. Check the device’s app store for an available update.
- Update the device. Install available operating-system or firmware updates for the phone, tablet, television, streaming player, or game console.
- Sign out of HBO Max. Reopen the app and sign in again. This refreshes a stale local session and is an official troubleshooting step across many platforms, including Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, LG, Samsung, Roku, Xbox, and others.
- Restart the device. Use the normal restart option where available. If the device is frozen, power it off, wait briefly, and turn it back on.
- Test another title again. A successful test after restarting tells you more than repeatedly attempting the same movie or episode.
Clear app cache or data when the platform allows it
Cached files can become stale or damaged. On Android TV, for example, the app-management settings provide options to clear HBO Max’s cache and data. Samsung TV troubleshooting also includes cache or data cleanup options, although the exact menu names depend on the model and software version.
Warning: Clearing app data usually signs you out and removes local settings. It does not normally cancel your subscription, but have your login details available before using it. If your device does not offer a cache option, do not improvise by deleting unrelated system data; proceed to restarting, updating, or reinstalling HBO Max.
Fix HBO Max in a computer browser
On a computer, the browser can block playback even when the internet connection is working. HBO Max’s current browser guidance emphasizes using a supported, up-to-date browser such as the latest Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge on Windows, or Safari.
- Close and reopen the browser. Close all browser windows, reopen the browser, sign in again, and test a different title.
- Try a private or incognito window. This is a diagnostic test, not necessarily a permanent solution. If video plays in private browsing, an extension, stored cookie, cached file, or browser permission is a likely cause.
- Disable extensions temporarily. Turn off ad blockers, privacy tools, script blockers, and other add-ons, then reload HBO Max. If playback returns, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify the conflict.
- Allow third-party cookies when required. Browser privacy settings can prevent the playback session from being created correctly. Add HBO Max as an allowed site if your browser offers per-site cookie controls.
- Clear the site’s cache and cookies. This signs you out of websites and removes stored browser data. Clear the HBO Max site data first if your browser provides that option; otherwise clear the relevant cached browsing data, restart the browser, and sign in again.
- Try a different supported browser. If Chrome fails but Edge or Firefox works, the issue is probably browser-specific rather than a complete HBO Max outage.
If no supported browser can play any title, test the same computer on another network or test another device. That prevents you from spending time changing browser settings when the real issue is connectivity or the account.

Fix a smart TV, streaming player, or game console
The exact menus vary by model, but the official troubleshooting pattern is consistent: update, sign out, restart, clear data where available, and reinstall only if necessary.
Smart TVs and TV-connected devices
- Check for a HBO Max app update in the television or player’s app store.
- Check the TV or player’s system settings for a firmware update.
- Sign out of HBO Max, restart the device, and sign back in.
- Use the device’s app settings to clear cache or data if that option exists.
- Delete HBO Max and reinstall it if the earlier steps fail.
On some platforms, simply turning the television off with the remote leaves parts of the system running. Use the device’s restart or power-cycle procedure when ordinary app closing does not help. If you are unsure of the correct procedure for your model, use the manufacturer’s instructions rather than repeatedly unplugging a running device.
Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, LG, Samsung, and Xbox
These platforms have different menu labels, but the useful distinction is the same: determine whether the failure follows the device. If HBO Max works on your phone over the same Wi-Fi but not on the TV, prioritize the TV app, TV software, stored app data, and the TV’s network configuration. If it fails on the TV, phone, and another player connected to the same network, move to the network checks below.
Check the internet connection—but do not rely on speed alone
HBO Max states that HD streaming requires at least 5 Mbps download speed and recommends 50 Mbps or more for 4K. Those figures are useful minimums, but a speed test can look adequate while the connection still drops packets, fluctuates, or loses contact with the streaming service.

- Run a speed test near the device that cannot play video, not only beside the router.
- Compare the result with another device on the same Wi-Fi.
- Restart the modem and router, then wait for the connection to return fully before testing again.
- Temporarily move the device closer to the router or test a wired connection.
- If possible, connect the device to a different network, such as a phone hotspot, for a brief test. This is diagnostic; it need not be a permanent arrangement.
If playback works on another network, investigate Wi-Fi interference, router configuration, DNS or filtering settings, VPN use, and ISP problems. These are possible causes, not guaranteed explanations. Avoid changing several network settings at once, because doing so makes it difficult to identify what actually helped.
Check whether the device is supported
HBO Max supports categories including phones, tablets, computers, televisions, streaming players, set-top boxes, and game consoles, but support depends on the specific model and operating-system version. A device can therefore be a television or streaming player in a general sense and still be outside the supported-device list.
If HBO Max is missing from the device’s official app store, cannot update, or the model is not listed as supported, repeated reinstalls are unlikely to solve the problem. First confirm that the app and device are supported in your country or region. Then test HBO Max on a known-supported phone, computer, TV, or streaming player.

Only after confirming that the current hardware is unsupported—or that the app consistently fails on that hardware while working elsewhere—should you consider an alternate supported streaming device. Buying new hardware is not the first-line remedy for a playback problem that may be caused by the network, account, or app session.

When the evidence points to an account or HBO Max-side problem
If all titles fail on multiple supported devices and networks, sign out and back in once more, then check the subscription and account used on each device. Make sure you are not testing a different account from the one that has access to HBO Max.
At that point, contact HBO Max support with evidence rather than a general report that “nothing works.” Include:
- The exact error message or error code
- The title or titles tested
- The device manufacturer and model
- The device operating-system or firmware version
- The HBO Max app version, or browser name and version
- Whether every title fails or only one
- Whether playback works on another device
- Whether playback works on another network
- What steps you already completed, including reinstalling the app
Do not repeatedly reinstall or factory-reset a device before contacting support. The error code, device details, and cross-device test are often more useful than another identical installation.
A short decision path
- One title fails: try another title, note the error, and report the specific program if the issue persists.
- All titles fail on one device: force-close, update, sign out, restart, clear cache or data where available, and reinstall.
- All titles fail on the same Wi-Fi: test another device, check speed and stability, restart the router, and compare with another network.
- All titles fail everywhere: capture the error code, verify the account, and contact HBO Max support. A service-wide outage is possible, but it should not be claimed without current official confirmation.

Why will HBO Max play some titles but not another?
