What Grooveshark launched in January 2012
Grooveshark’s release was a browser-based mobile web app, not a conventional iPhone or Android app installed from a store. Users opened the service’s website in a mobile browser, where an HTML5 interface provided music search and streaming. The beta was described at the time as a barebones player intended to work without Flash. The Verge’s launch report covered the release on January 13, 2012.
That distinction matters: Grooveshark was not announcing a newly approved native app. It was delivering a web experience directly, through a URL, rather than submitting that experience as an app-store package.
Which devices could use it—and what it could do
Launch-era coverage listed support for iOS devices, Android 2.3 and newer, BlackBerry PlayBook, and HP TouchPad. Windows Phone was not supported. These are historical compatibility details, not claims about present-day devices or browsers.

The Verge’s contemporary test on an iPhone 4S over Wi-Fi reported that search results appeared and playback started quickly, with decent sound quality. That was one publication’s test on one device and connection in 2012, not a general performance guarantee.
Why Grooveshark turned to the browser
Native distribution had become difficult. Apple removed Grooveshark’s iPhone app from the App Store in August 2010 after a complaint from Universal Music Group UK. Google removed the service from the Android Market in 2011 following complaints tied to copyrighted music and pressure from record labels. The decisions happened at different times and were separate events; contemporary coverage collected by Techmeme provides context for the app-store dispute.

With the HTML5 version, a user visited Grooveshark’s site and received the interface and streaming functions from the company’s servers. Since the web app was not a native package submitted to either store, it did not go through those stores’ app-approval process. The route offered a way to reach mobile users when store distribution was unavailable, while leaving the service dependent on a working website and compatible browser.
What HTML5 solved—and what it did not
In 2012, browser delivery promised one service that could reach several kinds of devices without building and submitting a separate native app for each store. It also gave Grooveshark more control over updates and a route to mobile devices, including Apple hardware where Flash was not an option. The trade-off was a constrained beta: no login or playlists, and browser behavior could vary by device and operating-system version. HTML5 did not guarantee the same experience everywhere.

Most importantly, avoiding app-store review was not a legal loophole for the music itself. It changed how listeners reached Grooveshark; it did not establish that the company had licenses for the recordings it streamed. The later shutdown makes the distinction plain: solving a distribution problem did not resolve copyright and licensing exposure.
Why the workaround was not a lasting solution
Grooveshark continued to pursue HTML5 and later promoted a broader player for multiple devices. But expanding the browser experience could not, by itself, settle the company’s disputes with major record labels or ensure that the service could keep operating. A web app still relied on Grooveshark’s servers, and its availability depended on the company remaining in business.

On April 30, 2015, Grooveshark ceased operations as part of a settlement with major record companies. The settlement required the company to remove copyrighted music and transfer its website, apps, and intellectual property. Reuters, republished by Inc., reported the shutdown and settlement. The original HTML5 player is no longer an operating service.

As a short-term distribution workaround, it did something useful: it restored a limited streaming experience in mobile browsers when native-store access was blocked or unavailable. As a durable product or answer to Grooveshark’s central business risk, it was not enough. The launch illustrates both the promise and the boundary of the early mobile web: a browser could route around a store’s gatekeeping, but not replace native-app capabilities or remove the obligation to clear music rights.
