On February 10, 2022, YouTube Chief Product Officer Neal Mohan outlined a roadmap spanning Shorts, livestreams, shopping, creator tools and viewing experiences. It was a mix of planned features, tests and early explorations—not a promise that every item would launch for every user that year. The announcement’s central themes were community, collaboration, commerce and new ways for creators to earn.
Shorts was set to gain creation tools and new ways to earn
YouTube planned to expand Shorts with more effects and editing tools, plus a feature for replying to a viewer’s comment with a Short. These additions would make the short-form format more useful for creating videos and continuing conversations, rather than serving only as a place to watch clips.
The strategy was also competitive: Shorts gave YouTube a native response to the growth of vertical short-form video, including TikTok, and a way to keep creators and audiences inside its own platform. YouTube also pointed to branded-content and shopping opportunities connected to Shorts, although the announcement did not specify how those integrations would work. Super Thanks was distinct from other creator income
YouTube planned to bring Super Thanks to Shorts. It is a viewer-to-creator payment intended to show appreciation; it is not the same as Super Chat, which lets viewers pay to highlight messages in livestream chat. Both differ from channel memberships, advertising, brand deals and shopping or affiliate sales. The announcement did not establish universal eligibility or regional availability for the Shorts feature, so creators should not read the roadmap as a guarantee of access.

The broader aim was to diversify creator income beyond conventional advertising. YouTube did not present every option as a single monetization system, and access to individual tools can depend on factors such as location, channel status and program eligibility. Thurrott’s contemporaneous account also described the monetization direction.
Livestream plans focused on collaboration and fan participation
Creators could go live together
YouTube said it planned collaborative livestreaming that would let two creators broadcast together. Co-hosting could suit interviews, discussions, gaming and joint events, while introducing each creator to the other’s audience. The 2022 roadmap did not spell out device support, eligibility, audience mechanics or a specific rollout date.
Gifted memberships were being tested
YouTube was testing a feature that would let viewers buy channel memberships for other viewers during livestreams. A gifted membership could bring someone into a channel’s paid community while giving fans another way to support its creator. The feature was described as a test, not a service already available to every channel. The test also placed YouTube closer to livestream platforms where gifting access or subscriptions is a familiar community activity. Shopping was meant to reach further into video
YouTube described plans for shoppable videos, Live Shopping and commerce opportunities across the app. The concept was to connect product discovery with creators and the videos viewers were already watching. That makes shopping more than another ad placement: it uses video and creator recommendations as a path from discovery toward a possible purchase.

It did not settle which merchants or commerce platforms would be supported, whether checkout would take place within YouTube, which countries would be included, or how creator commissions and sponsored-product disclosures would work. Brands and sellers therefore could not infer that a product mention would automatically produce a checkout option or sales attribution. YouTube Studio was to offer more help with video ideas
YouTube said it planned to bring additional insights into YouTube Studio, drawing on YouTube and Google data to help creators understand audience interests, identify demand and develop ideas for future videos. The goal was to inform creative decisions, not to promise a formula for views.
The roadmap did not provide a dashboard specification, explain the data methodology or give a launch timetable. It also did not establish that creators would receive unrestricted access to individual users’ private search histories. RouteNote’s account summarized the proposed Studio insights.

Comments and channel guidelines were also on the roadmap
Two smaller community features rounded out the plans. YouTube was working on sorting comments associated with video timecodes by the point in the video they referred to, which could make timestamp-specific discussion easier to follow. It was also testing channel guidelines, giving creators a way to set expectations for conversations on their channels. These tools address different needs: one organizes discussion around video moments, while the other lets creators communicate norms for participation. Their mention in the roadmap did not establish immediate or universal availability. RouteNote’s February 2022 overview described both.

The roadmap discussed improvements to YouTube TV, the U.S. live-TV subscription service at the time, including a redesigned interface, smoother navigation and better organization of Library and Live areas. It also described more interaction between the television experience and a phone, including mobile-assisted actions such as commenting and sharing.
YouTube TV is not simply the regular YouTube app installed on a smart TV or streaming device. The announcement discussed the subscription service alongside broader television viewing, but the two products are distinct. Thurrott’s coverage reported the interface plans and identified YouTube TV as a U.S.-only service at that time.

YouTube Music was considering more consistent playback volume
YouTube Music was expected to get a normalization-style listening feature intended to reduce unusually loud peaks and raise quieter sections, making volume more consistent between songs. The roadmap did not establish the final feature name, technical method, supported platforms, rollout date or whether listeners would be able to disable it. RouteNote’s summary described the planned listening improvement.
NFTs and the metaverse were explorations, not product launches
YouTube said it was exploring ways creators might use Web3 technologies, blockchain and NFTs. One idea was to give fans a way to verify ownership of unique creator-related digital items—potentially videos, images, art or experiences. The metaverse discussion was more tentative, with gaming mentioned as a possible area of impact. YouTube did not announce a finished NFT marketplace or provide a launch date, supported blockchain, fee structure or defined ownership terms. Thurrott’s contemporaneous coverage reported the Web3 and NFT comments.
Token ownership should not be confused with copyright ownership: holding an NFT tied to an image or video does not, by itself, establish ownership of the underlying copyright. Any creator-facing implementation would also raise practical questions around fraud, audience trust and consumer protection. YouTube framed the area as exploratory and emphasized that responsible implementation required further consideration.

How to read the 2022 roadmap
The announcement reflected YouTube’s effort to strengthen several parts of its creator and viewing ecosystem at once: Shorts creation and income, livestream communities, video-led shopping, creator planning tools and television use. Its value as a historical product announcement lies as much in that strategic direction as in the individual feature ideas.
For creators, viewers and merchants, the key distinction is the status of each item: some were plans, gifted memberships were being tested, and Web3 ideas were under exploration. The February 2022 coverage does not establish which features ultimately launched, how they were named later or whether they remain available in 2026.
