Yes. TikTok is currently available to U.S. users through both Apple’s App Store and Google Play. TikTok announced the restoration on February 14, 2025, after Apple and Google relisted the app on February 13. The official U.S. listings were still accessible when checked on August 18, 2026: Apple’s App Store and Google Play.
The newer development is not a second app-store return in 2026. In January 2026, a U.S. joint-venture divestiture changed who controls TikTok’s U.S. operation and how its data, algorithm, moderation and security obligations are handled. That makes continued distribution more legally durable, but it does not guarantee that TikTok can never face another restriction.
Is TikTok available in both U.S. app stores?
Yes, provided your Apple or Google account is set to the United States and your device is compatible. The iOS listing identifies the publisher as TikTok Ltd., is free to download and includes in-app purchases. The Android listing is the official package published through Google Play.

Store visibility can differ by country, account region, age controls, device-management policy and operating-system compatibility. A U.S. listing therefore does not mean that every traveler or non-U.S. account will see the same result.

The original app-store return was therefore a February 2025 event. The January 2026 ownership change is the later milestone that affects the longer-term legal context.
Why was TikTok removed?
The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act restricted U.S. app stores and hosting providers from distributing, maintaining or updating covered applications controlled by a foreign adversary unless they completed a legally sufficient “qualified divestiture.” The law put compliance risk on Apple, Google, hosting companies and TikTok—not only on people who used the app.
Lawmakers and executive-branch officials cited the potential for access to U.S. user data and foreign influence over TikTok’s recommendation system. TikTok denied improperly sharing U.S. user data with the Chinese government and challenged the law. The Congressional Research Service describes the statutory timeline and the removal of TikTok, Lemon8 and CapCut from certain stores.

Why did Apple and Google restore it?
Restoration followed the enforcement delay and legal assurances to the app-store operators. The Congressional Research Service reports that Apple and Google restored TikTok on February 13, 2025, after receiving Justice Department letters assuring them they would not be fined for carrying the app.

TikTok remained in legal and political limbo in early 2025. Relisting restored the official download and update channels while the ownership question continued.
Did users need a new app?
No. Ordinary U.S. users could continue with the same TikTok app rather than install a replacement. However, “same app” does not mean every underlying service is identical. Ownership, backend infrastructure, data controls, recommendation systems, moderation operations and terms can change while an app-store listing and icon remain the same.

The Associated Press reported that the U.S. operation would use a ByteDance-licensed recommendation algorithm retrained on U.S. user data, so it would be inaccurate to call the algorithm wholly independent or wholly “American.” No reliable evidence establishes that every user’s feed changed in the same way.
What changed with the 2026 U.S. divestiture?
According to the reported closing and the White House framework, TikTok’s U.S. operation moved into TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, controlled by U.S.-based investors rather than by ByteDance. ByteDance retained an ownership interest below the relevant control threshold; saying it has no ownership would be inaccurate.

The recommendation system
The reported structure licenses the recommendation algorithm from ByteDance and retrains it on U.S. user data. That arrangement may reduce foreign control of the U.S. service without proving that the technology has no ByteDance connection.
What the DOJ opinion means
On July 16, 2026, the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel concluded that the TikTok USDS Joint Venture version does not fall under the federal government-device prohibition because the venture is majority-owned by American investors, operates independently of ByteDance and has revised its recommendation and cybersecurity programs. Read the OLC opinion in context: it addresses the federal government-device statute, not universal approval of TikTok for every employer, school, state agency or private user.

No one can responsibly promise that. TikTok is available now, and the U.S. joint venture and qualified-divestiture framework reduce the immediate app-store-ban risk. Future executive action, litigation, ownership changes, compliance failures or new legislation could still affect distribution or service.

The White House order reserved authority for additional national-security action. Federal-device rules also do not automatically override an employer’s, school’s, state government’s or agency’s own policy.
How to download TikTok officially
iPhone or iPad
- Open the App Store.
- Search for “TikTok” or open the official U.S. listing.
- Verify that the publisher is TikTok Ltd.
- Tap Get and authenticate with your Apple ID, Face ID or Touch ID.
- Open TikTok and sign in.
Android phone or tablet
- Open Google Play.
- Search for “TikTok” or open the official listing.
- Verify the publisher and app identity.
- Tap Install.
- Open the app and sign in.
Avoid treating third-party APK mirrors as the normal workaround. Sideloaded packages create authenticity, malware, update and account-security risks.
If TikTok does not appear in your store
- Confirm that your Apple or Google account region is the United States.
- Check for iOS or Android updates if the store reports incompatibility.
- Review free storage; the iOS listing is a relatively large download.
- Restart the store app or device to clear a temporary listing error.
- Check parental controls, age restrictions and screen-time settings.
- On a work, school, military or agency device, check mobile-device-management restrictions.
- If TikTok is already installed, look for an update before deleting it.
- For account or service problems after installation, use TikTok’s official Help Center rather than an unofficial download site.
What the return means for creators and businesses
U.S. audience access has resumed, but app-store availability does not guarantee reach, payouts or uninterrupted access to TikTok Shop, LIVE, gifts, advertising or creator programs. Creators should maintain an independent audience through a website, email list or other platforms and confirm music and commercial-use rights for each channel.
Businesses should assess whether TikTok’s audience and formats fit their goals, while accounting for campaign compliance, measurement, data governance and platform concentration. TikTok’s advertiser materials claim more than 170 million monthly active U.S. users; that is a TikTok commercial figure, not an independently audited measurement.
